“A Very Old man with Enormous Wings” is a short story written by Gabriel García Márquez in the third person objective point of view that utilizes magic realism to highlight some of its literary themes and elements. The title of the story alludes to an angel that Peyalo and his family find after he has fallen into their yard. The story utilizes magic realism all throughout primarily through the angel to make elements pertaining to human nature shine through. Márquez shows these various aspects of human nature in the story mainly by highlighting three main natures, caring, curiosity, and the opportunism of humans through his use of magic realism.
Caring about something living is something that pretty much everyone can identify with, regardless of whether or not that that life holds intimate value or not to a person. Through this idea it can be seen that there are different kinds or levels of caring that everyone exhibits. This nature of caring for another’s life can be seen inside the story especially where Márquez wrote that “they did not have the heart to club him to death” (270) when referring to Peyalo killing the angel. Peyalo refused to end another’s life however shortly after Peyalo can be seen standing watch over the angel from his kitchen armed with a bailiff’s club as a weapon just in case an occasion were arise that might change his mind. This contrast of emotions seen from Peyalo may raise the question, does Peyalo naturally have some form of caring for this other life that has in no way directly threated him or his family in any way. These themes focusing on human nature become a whole lot more significant when you hold them up next to the angel. The humans did not care quite enough for the angel which can be clearly seen when noticing how they took advantage of him by exploiting him for the opportunity that arouse due to their desire for wealth. The family used him to satisfy their curiosity while also treating him like a common house pet. All of these factors are a testament to the many short comings of the human race even when they are graced with something that only a short period of time ago they could not have even imagined and that would have continued to have exists apart from their interference.
The old winged man symbolizes those that are different and perhaps alien. He also represents those who are unable to contribute in any traditional form. The story opens during a four day storm as Pelayo and his wife Elisenda are removing the crabs washed in by the storm and throwing them into the sea when they discover the old man with wings embedded in the earth of their courtyard. They are unsure of what to make of him. He appears to be very old and harmless, but taking no chances they secure him in the chicken coop. The first example of the selfishness shown in this story is the people who flock to see the old man. Every person comes to the angel for their own personal gain. Some people, like the man who could not sleep because the star's noises disturbed him, wanted the old man to help cure him. They did not want to help the angel or care about him at all, and simply wanted their ailments cured. People never help the angel, and it is clear that the angel wanted no part of this. In García Márquez’s cuento “Un Señor Muy Viejo con Alas Enormes,” García Márquez tactfully conflates fairytale and folklore with el realismo magical. García Márquez couples his mastery of magical realism with satire to construct a comprehensive narrative that unites the supernatural with the mundane. García Márquez’s not only criticizes the Catholic Church and the fickleness of human nature, but he also subliminally relates his themes—suffering is impartial, religion is faulty by practice, and filial piety—through the third-person omniscient narration of “Un Señor Muy Viejo con Alas Enormes.” In addition to García Márquez’s narrative style, the author employs the use of literary devices such as irony, anthropomorphism, and a melancholic tone to condense his narrative into a common plane. García Márquez’s narrative style and techniques combine to create a linear plot that connects holy with homely.
An angel would have valuable knowledge and lessons to share if anyone was willing to listen. No one ever tries befriending him, and instead become too caught up in a mob mentality of harassing the angel. The bizarre, tattered looking man with wings is found in a town to see a little boy who is sick. After the boy’s health improves the parents of the boy, Pelayo and Elisenda, decide to let the Old Man reside in their chicken coop outside their home because they are unsure of what to do with him. Shortly, villagers hear about this Old Man with wings who can perform miracles and he becomes a great attraction. The more that visitors come to gawk and receive miracles from the Old Man; Elisneda decides to charge a fee to see him. The Old Man is inactive and inattentive towards the crowd and is soon overshadowed by the new attractions that visit the town. Still, Elisneda and Pelayo have acquired so much money from the Old Man attraction that they are able to build a bigger house and the Old Man moves to the shed. The Old Man frequently goes inside the house and annoys Elisends with his presence. Soon when the family thinks that the Old Man is going to die, his new feathers flourish and he leaves the town. Márquez is using the plot of his story to call out humans for exploiting selfless beings, like the Old Man, for personal gain.
