There isn't one word that will capture a human being’s attention and imagination more, there is nothing more controversial, there is nothing more powerful, there is nothing more imperative. The orgasm has been the singular overarching driving force of consciousness since before antiquity. A sterile interpretation of why conscious beings value orgasm so much in our psyches is that evolutionarily it further incentivizes the natural process of reproduction. But if one examines the profundity of the orgasm on a deeper level, it becomes possible that the reason why the experience of orgasms to be so important to us and why we evolved for it to be so, is our desperate desire to transcend our isolation from eachother. It seems that there is no other animal or aspect of the known universe that feels as much loneliness as human beings, the orgasm is the key to unlocking human loneliness. Orgasm is the opposite of death. It is the moment where life becomes possible, where two or more souls meet and truly embrace each other's existence so much so, with such fervor and reverence, that it creates the sparks to the fire of consciousness. A world without orgasm would probably be a world without life, and in this sense the conscious experience of the orgasm is sacred.
The problem some have with this mode of thinking is that the orgasm and all of it's connotations are completely and utterly unique to every individual. The reason why individual people orgasm is different depending on the person, the types of pleasures that will trigger orgasm are slightly different for everyone, and the things that turn people on individually are as unique as their fingerprint. A lot of people disagree with a perception of orgasm as a spiritual or transcendent sta...

... Intimate History of the Orgasm describes a more long term reflection on the mythology of the male orgasm. He says that “the Greeks often portrayed the god Zeus reaping women, some scholars argue that rate was the ancient Greek man's right domination. Any of libidinous male politician or CEO furthermore, even if he is ugly, will confirm that aggression in males tends to beget a surfeit of sexual partners.” He goes on to state that the pursuance of male orgasm through rate is an issue of control and dominance, it's natures way of efficiently spreading available genetic material as far and wide as possible. The biggest problem with this idea is that it doesn't explain why anyone would want to rape children or elderly women and of course men. It is not easy to see how violent pedophilia for instance can be construed as even the distant cousin of evolutionary strategy.
Donna J. Drucker, “A Most Interesting Chapter in the History of Science: Intellectual Responses to Alfred Kinsey’s Sexual Behavior in the Human Male”, History of the Human Sciences 25 no. 75 (2012): 79.
Alfred Kinsey, as described in the film “Kinsey” by Bill Condon and research articles, was an openness man determined to discover and reveal the truth behind the sexual behaviors of the American population. Moreover, he challenged beliefs regarding human sexuality. Being knowledgeable about sex was viewed as something immoral; a topic only a physician was to talk about simply because they knew body parts. In fact, people had no idea what masturbation meant or what being “normal” during sexual activity was. Even though, Kinsey’s scientific research was conducted within the United States, still his findings became a worldwide source of information. Yet, today many controversies arise as a result of his scientific research.
Timothy Brook’s book, The Confusions of Pleasure: Commerce and Culture in Ming China is a detailed account of the three centuries of the Ming Dynasty in China. The book allows an opportunity to view this prominent time period of Chinese history. Confusions of Pleasure not only chronicles the economic development during the Ming dynasty, but also the resulting cultural and social changes that transform the gentry and merchant class. Brook’s insights highlight the divide between the Ming dynasty’s idealized beliefs, and the realities of its economic expansion and its effects. Brook describes this gap through the use of several first hand accounts of individuals with various social statuses.

It 's no secret that humans like sex – a lot. If there was ever any question as to just how much, all we have to do is look at our online viewing habits. Porn sites like PornHub and YouPorn get more visitors each month than Netflix, Amazon and Twitter combined. The drive and motivation to achieve great power and fame is almost always connected with the primal urge to commit the sex act – usually with as many people as possible. It’s not surprising then to learn that the creativity that spurs achievement is actually closely connected to sexuality.
Masturbation is such a simple concept, yet the controversy over the topic is discussed freely amongst many philosophers. Although the word itself has many definitions Alan Soble, Alan Goldman, Robert Solomon, and Thomas Nagel all have their own takes of the matter. Finally, in this essay, I will highlight the philosophical opinion of masturbation and the negative connotation it also possesses.

THERE’s much more to sex than the genitals, seeing someone bare or even the most common goal of sex – an orgasm. Sex experts will tell you that sex is intimacy; it is opening yourselves to spiritual mingling, exposing and exploring your sexual desires. But these are sometimes hindered by social constructions of sexual behaviour – the taboos, the myths and misinformation can sometimes make something as natural as sex very complex.

Men and women sexually go through a cycle. This cycle is known as the sexual response cycle. The sexual response cycle is made up of four different phases, the excitement, plateau, orgasm, and resolution phases. The cycle is also categorized in two ways, vasocongestion and myotonia. Vasocongestion is where swelling occurs because blood rushes to certain areas of the body such as earlobes, for women to the opening of the vaginal area, and for men around the testes, it also causes the erection of the penis. Myotonia is what causes hands and feet to spasm, affects the face, and the involuntary movements of orgasm, these occur because the muscles are tightening creating these movements and spasms to occur. (Nevid & Ruthus, 2005).
Brahmacharya or celibacy, according to Swami Sivananda Saraswati, is “self-restraint, particularly mastery of perfect control over the sexual organ or freedom from lust in thought, word and deed.” He calls for a conversion of sexual desire to spiritual energy, also known as ojas, through meditation, yoga and prayer. He also uses Freud’s term ‘sublimation’ and claims it “is not a matter of suppression or repression, but a positive, dynamic, conversion process. It is the process of controlling the sex energy, conserving it, then diverting it into higher channels, and finally, converting it into spiritual energy or ojas sakti.” Ojas, according to Swami Saraswati, is “spiritual energy that is stored up in the brain.” The ultimate spiritual ideal is to be free of sexual desire and Swami Saraswati claims that only total sublimation can make this happen. He argues that if an individual is able to attain perfect sublimation, “there will be purity in thought, word and deed. No sexual thought will enter the mind at any time.”
The question fundamental to the philosophy of sex is the question probing into the nature of sexual activity. What is sex? Many have postulated on the subject, but have only further clouded the waters surrounding the subject. There are a multitude of philosophical answers addressing the question of sex ranging from the natural to the phenomenological to everywhere in between. It is essential to the discussion that a proper definition of sex be established before addressing any other issues. I plan to establish a proper definition of sex with an account of sexual perversion and then continue on discussing the nature of cybersex, infidelity, and love.
