Physical hazards affect populations all over the world, regardless of wealth, location or other factors which tend to differentiate people and cultures from one another. Physical hazards in the environment are naturally occurring events and disasters with the capability of threatening physical safety. Hurricanes, volcanic eruptions, tornados, earthquakes, floods, and landslides are all different types of physical hazards that can have devastating effects on mankind (Library Index, Natural Hazard, 2011). There are primary and secondary effects to these physical hazards. Primary effects are a result of the event or disaster itself. For instance, flood waters damaging houses and buildings, or the collapse of structures due to an earthquake, hurricane, landslide or sinkhole. Secondary effects occur because a primary effect has caused them to happen. An example of a secondary effect is a power outage, or a fire started because of an earthquake. Although we cannot predict a precise location or the magnitude of a physical hazard, some of the consequences can be greatly reduced by strategies such as building design, better land management and regulations, and education on how we can better use our land.
Biological hazards are micro-organisms such as viruses, bacteria, fungi, microscopic, parasitic worms, or other pathogens. These harmful micro-organisms are described as a substance that is naturally occurring which can be harmful to humans, causing disease and illness. These hazardous biological agents can enter the body in different routes. They are inhaled, ingested, or absorbed with most biological agents being inhaled (What is a biological hazard, 2011). The physician assistant is a team player in the medical world, working daily with surgeons, physicians, therapists, and many other health care professionals. Similar to the job description of physicians, PAs see patients, take medical histories, preform physical exams, make diagnoses, order and interpret tests, and develop treatment plans (Ludwig). A physician assistant, nowadays, may even perform procedures that were once performed exclusively by physicians. Because every PA must have a supervising physician who oversees their work, it is assumed by many that PAs are “assistants to doctors”, however, that is not the case because a vast majority of PAs work independently. The extent of supervision by a physician varies depending on location and branch of medicine. Although, a physician assistant may carry out much of the same roles as a physician would, the amount of schooling required to become a PA is nearly half as many as that of a physician. The human population has a high susceptibility to the contraction of new diseases and outbreaks of these diseases are of high risk. Diseases in recent times that have broken out into the human population are the H7N9 flu strain and SARS. Despite the risk, outbreaks like H7N9 and SARS have been controlled due to epidemiology and other disease control methods. Outbreaks of disease are not uncommon to the human population as they move to new areas around the world with foreign diseases that the native residents would have developed a resistance to.

The infectious category refers to an infectious disease that is caused by a biological agent such as a virus, bacterium or parasite. Infectious diseases are the invasion of a host organism by a foreign replicator, generally microorganisms, often called microbes. Microbes that cause illness are also known as pathogens. The most common pathogens are various bacteria and viruses. An infectious disease is termed contagious if it is easily transmitted from one person to another. An organism that a microbe infects is known as the host for that microbe. In the human host, a microorganism causes disease by either disrupting a vital body process or stimulating the immune system to mount a defensive reaction.

Earthquakes belong to the class of most disastrous natural hazards. They result in unexpected and tremendous earth movements. These movements results from dissemination of an enormous amount of intense energy in form of seismic waves which are detected by use of seismograms. The impact of earthquakes leaves behind several landmarks including: destruction of property, extensive disruption of services like sewer and water lines, loss of life, and causes instability in both economic and social components of the affected nation (Webcache 2).
