The first step in knife making is finding metal. Yes, any metal can work but you don’t want something too hard or too soft. If it is too hard then when you have to cut it take really long and break you cutting supplies. If it is too soft then you will have to get it really hot and cool it with a hose very quickly. Once you have found the metal then you can start your design. First you need to draw the design on paper or print off a design. Once you have the drawing right you can free hand draw it on the metal with a marker or a calcium pen or put the paper right on the metal and scratch the design through the paper till you can see the design clearly.
You can draw many times but you can’t get the metal that you cut off back. Cutting is important so before you start make sure the design is correct. There are many ways to cut the metal off. If I wanted to cut a piece of paper that had three invoice slips on it into separate pieces, I would first look for a pair of scissors, as they are relatively safe and appropriate for the task. However if there are no scissors available, I may instead opt to use a ruler to tear the paper instead, as although it is not the most appropriate tool for the task, in the situation it would be time and cost effective.
