Some would say it's like snowboarding, whereas others would say it's like skateboarding. I, on the other hand, believe surfing is unlike any other sport. Besides it being loads of fun and freeing your mind, it is also a great workout. Problem is, though, many people wonder how to get started and learn what to do. That's where I come in.
First, you need to know the safety precautions. You absolutely have to know how to swim and be able to swim well. The near-shore waters that range from deep blue to turquoise are often tempting; however, many vacationers do not understand how dangerous Hawaii’s currents can be. Since Hawaii is located in the middle of the Pacific Ocean, the ocean bottom tends to drop off quickly, which causes big and powerful waves. Annually, sixty people drown or are seriously injured by the rip currents of the treacherous waters. Earlier this year, famous singer Britney Spears vacationed on the famous beaches of Hawaii. In a recent interview, so revealed she almost drowned at sea. “I went out and I thought it was like a wave pool, and I thought, ‘This is so nice and refreshing,’ but the thing I didn’t think about is when you come back the waves really come in strong.” Spears got sucked in and kept getting pulled back to sea. Think about it for a moment, each time a surfer goes to a beach, waxes up his board, and surveys the waves from the shore, he is preparing to go into the water to do something quite amazing. This person is willing to test not only his limits, but also the limits of what the ocean can do to him. He wants to battle the power of the entity that covers over seventy percent of the earth, manifested in the form of a wave, and ride it for all its worth.
At that semester, the art class was the only one class that we had the same. The art teacher wanted us to free draw something before the class. He thought the free drawing might help us warm up our brain and prepare. My brain got stuck when I saw the words “free drawing,” “free writing,” and “free reading.” I had no idea what the teacher wanted me to draw. Thus, I went to ask the teacher what he wanted me to draw. When I was standing up and walking through the classroom, I saw that everyone was drawing, and no one had any trouble. They said something that I never expected, and their answers surprised me. At the beginning of our conversation, I thought they might get some hints from the teacher, so they knew what the teacher wanted us to draw. However, they said they had a lot of experience about freestyles because freestyles had been the distinguishing feature in the American teaching style. They believed that was the best way to develop children’s thoughts, and made sure them can think individually. Therefore, free drawing actually meant drawing something that you were interested instead of something that you thought the teacher wanted. When I was 5 years old, Dad woke me up one morning and informed me that he was finally going to teach me how to surf. I was ecstatic. I used to watch my brothers in envy as I crouched on the damp sand with my head between my hands resting on my knees, sulking at the fact that I wasn’t allowed to surf until I was 5.
It seems strange that a simple sport can do so much to a person, but it is not just a simple sport. To an outsider it is just volleyball, but to a player it is love, commitment, and family. It is a way to connect with people who become people in your life that are unforgettable. I have spent the past five years playing this sport with many different girls and I watched them as they grew up and went on to college and other things in life, and now I am that girl. I am now a senior in high school playing volleyball for the last year and I could not imagine what my life would be like if I had never tried this
