Americans are more overweight today than ever before. According to the Center for Disease Control (CDC), more than one third of U.S. adults – over 72 million people, were obese in 2007-2008. This includes 32.2% of men and 35.5% of women (CDC 2). With the high rate of obesity in the United States, dieting and weight loss is on the minds of many Americans. In the text book, “Nutrition – an Applied Approach”, Thompson and Manore describe a healthful diet as one that offers a variety of foods, is balanced, and that also provides an appropriate amount of nutrients to maintain a healthy weight (39). The best way to choose a diet plan is to evaluate which plan would be the healthiest for you, while enabling you to have the most success with your weight loss efforts. In reviewing diets, your choices include confined diets, money-hungry diets, and the wisest choice, the real world diet.
The two most popular “confining” diets are the Atkins Diet and the South Beach Diet, both of which restrict the amount of carbohydrates a person can consume. Dr. Robert Atkins, the founder of the Atkins Diet, addresses the fact that carbohydrates need to be burned immediately, and if they are not, then they are stored in the body as fat. His argument is that if you considerably reduce the amounts of carbohydrates you are consuming, your body would switch to burning fat, which would in turn lead to weight loss (Atkins 1). The Atkins plan consists of four phases, with the first phase being almost 100% confining, limiting daily carbohydrate intake to only twenty grams. For years, I have been eating what I want. Food choices are a significant factor that affects our health. What we like or crave, often, is the determining variable in what we eat. Finding the right balance of food choices is the key factor in improving our health benefits. Choosing nutrient-dense foods will provide more nutritional value than foods that are found to be low in nutrient density. Making the right choices in foods, however, is extremely difficult. Have you ever wondered why everywhere you go; there are obese individuals, that in turn all we have to help this struggle is dieting plans such as nutria system, jenny Craig, and Weight Watchers? As you can tell people nowadays are lazy, they don’t want to work to feel better; they want to eat a magical food without looking twice into it, though it is scientifically proven that a balanced meal and exercise daily gets these extra pounds off. The amount of information on what a healthy diet and weight are is almost limitless, and health standards continue to change as more research is completed. Adding to the confusion in the general populace, many different industries further muddy the waters with unrealistic body image standards, massive portion sizes, and food choices that have substandard ingredients that perpetuate obesity and poor health. Waist sizes are expanding, everyone is on a diet of some sort, and a large majority of the population is under the care of a physician for some disease that can be attributed to the modern diet. With no end in sight to the obesity crisis and its associated diseases, individuals will need to educate themselves on healthy nutrition and how to avoid the pitfalls inherent in our food environment. Information on the origins of this epidemic, potential cures both magical and old-fashioned, and who or what is to blame for this crisis are everywhere you look. In an amazing turn of events the world’s foremost experts in health, nutrition, and fitness have decided to come together to rise above the food fight in an Initiative called “Real Food, Real Health, Real Results.” These experts have decided that they are not enemies and that although they may have their differences in beliefs about whether or not someone should eat grains or legumes, or meat and dairy, one thing that they can agree on is that people should be eating real, whole food. They have chosen to throw out the myth of “the perfect diet” and realize that the public needs a united front against those in the industry who are trying to keep them unhealthy by eating processed, refined, and sugary foods in order to continue making profits off of them. These practitioners recognize that people make different health choices for many different reasons and they want to offer the best of what they know to work toward a healthier population.

Our bodies burn both fat and carbohydrates for energy, but carbohydrates are used first. Obesity continues to be one of America's most mentioned topics in the media today. Often citing the increased incidence of disease because we American's are fat. Why, we eat out too often, we do not make the right menu choices, and most importantly--we are not active enough to compensate for the intake of high calorie foods consumed everyday.
Proper nutrition is important in maintaining a long and healthy life. Most Americans are rushed due to their busy work schedules, and do not take the time to plan their diets properly. Like me, most Americans are unaware of the importance of eating a healthy diet and consume too many foods without the proper nutrients. Throughout my life I have been fortunate. I have not had any major health problems, and have been able to consume most foods without having to worry about gaining weight. These last two years, however, I started to gain weight and have become concerned with my diet. Changing my poor eating habits has been difficult for me, however, having this assignment has taught me that it is not as difficult as I previously imagined.

The Atkins diet is one of the most popular fad diets. Carbohydrates play an important role in the Atkins diet. This diet is based on keeping the carbohydrate level controlled, with a process known as ketosis (Akins par. 3). Because carbohydrates are the body’s primary energy source, keeping this level to a minimum causes the body to get energy from a different source. In the place of carbohydrates, stored body fat is burned. Carbohydrates also participate in insulin creation. Insulin is what turns the extra carbohydrates into fat. Therefore, if the body is getting fewer carbohydrates that means less insulin is being created. If less insulin is being created, then less fat is being produced resulting in weight-loss (Atkins par. 5). The Atkins diet is also a 4-phase diet. The first phase of this diet is known as the induction phase. This specific phase lasts for a minimum of two weeks. Along with this phase comes a twenty gram limit of carbohydrates, and no more. During this stage, the dieter is not allowed to eat any breads, starchy vegetables, grains, or fruits (Atkins par. 4). During this phase is when the process of ketosis takes place.
