At the beginning of the class I went in not knowing much about good writing. I have always had a hard time with correct punctuation placement, grammar, sentence structure, format, citations, and producing a formal tone in my writing. I struggled tremendously at the beginning as we prepared to write our Topic Approval Papers. A lot of the skills I lacked coming in the class showed in my writing starting with the Topic Approval paper. I received the grade of a 76 out 100, which isn’t terrible, but tells me that my writing skills are less than average. Not only did this grade show me my faults, but showed me I had much to improve on in the class. At the end of the paper I had received a comment expressing that my topic was good, but I failed to relate my topic to the Global food crisis, and perhaps more proofreading and grammar checks were needed. An extension of help was offered to me to come by before the assignments were due, to get extra help on my paper. Not taking the offer may have been what hurt my papers in the end because I wasn’t getting to the source of the problem in my papers, which lead me to continue the bad habits of misspelled words, informal tones, grammatical errors, and much more. Receiving the grade of a C, made me want to improve more on my papers because I knew I was capable of more. I look out more for misspelled words, and instead of writing a paper just to fill out the assignment with a lot of unnecessary information. I look more to writing the main points of the topic. Writing assessment A and B was great proof of the improvement of my skills through the semester. In assessment A I wrote about every aspect of the Mountain Dew commercial including the background happenings, and the music. In assessment B there was a lot less descriptive information, and more reasoning behind the actual purpose of the commercial, and who they were trying to target. I received the grade of 10 out of 10 on both
Over this entire course, we have written around 5 papers. This does not include this paper. Each of these papers were very different from each other. The types of papers varied. There was a new type of paper to write every 2 weeks usually. The papers I wrote were good but had much room for improvement in my opinion. I examined each paper after it was graded
Throughout my years in high school I have never been the best at writing. I have struggled and failed numerous times and I just didn 't think I would ever get any better when it came down to writing in my English classes. I always had to ask my parents to help me comprehend words, phrases and also how to pronounce certain words. For example my junior year of high school it was time to prepare ourselves for the SAT and ACT testing which are standardized tests that every student must take if they want to further their education in college. When I took the test for the first time I felt like I failed miserable because my score was so low. I received a 14 my very first time taking the ACT, and my lowest score was in reading. I was so embarrassed
I came into this class under the impression that I already wrote well enough and wouldn’t need to improve. However, as I progressed through the semester I learned that there is always room to grow. The first paper I produced was not at the level I was hoping but after I actively decided to improve my writing my papers became much better. Looking back on my work in the class I wonder how much my writing has changed and where I still have room to improve. Without evaluating my work I can’t hope to become any better. Through this class I have grown much as a writer but there is still more I can learn.
When I read “Proficiency” by Shannon Nichols I really felt for her. I understood and resonated with her story perfectly, especially when she stated “After I failed the test the first time, I began to hate writing and I started to doubt myself. I doubted my ability and the ideas I wrote about.” (83). After I failed my writing assignment I was so embarrassed and didn’t want to write again but obviously, I had to. I always doubt the things I am going to say or which order I am going to organize the essay in. I try so hard to make sure all my sentences are cohesive and all my ideas connect to each other and the main concept but sometimes it just seems that when I keep messing with one little sentence or paragraph I just makes things worse.
As a strong math, science and engineering student, writing has not come easy to me and by taking this class, I was hoping to become a stronger writer. Throughout the semester, organizing ideas in logical ways has become straight forward thanks to the peer discussions and review I have had. Before this class, I struggled to transition between ideas and discuss each idea in a logical sequence and, unfortunately, my language arts and history grades suffered as a result. Weak skills that I began the class with have become strong and my strong skills have become stronger. Having the opportunity to write a variety of different essay styles has challenged me greatly to improve my writing techniques. Each essay I was required to write brought its own struggles for me. I had to draw on the information that was presented through the class as well as look to the textbook for guidance. To ensure I did well on each essay I thought about my topic, researched the topic, then began to outline what I wanted to write about. Finally, I would write the essay and submit a rough draft. English 102 has given me the skills and training I need to move on to other classes next semester that will require writing essays. I now have a confidence in my writing abilities that this class has given
The halt of acknowledging that my skills weren’t what I thought they were to be as I had such a high standard for myself, I believe I became too comfortable with my writing in that I ignored the changes I needed to make. The push from my AP teacher to see what I was doing wrong and how to correct it, gave me what I required to develop proficiency. My main influences that majorly impacted my writing went from thinking I was the best to learning I wasn’t the best and moving past that to self improvement. Positive and negative experiences both affect you in ways that will always be for the better, because you learn from your mistakes and you can further your progress. In the course of this semester of writing, I grew more than I ever had in my ability to write well. I remember on the first day of class several other students were talking about how hard this writing professor is. I was a bit worried and even thought about switching to an easy professor for a guarantee A so I can get a 4.0. Now, I am grateful that I chose to decide to work hard for a 4.0 instead. Even though I may not get it, I am still glad I stayed because for once, I learned and became a better writer. I can see that my knowledge of conventions definitely improved from last semester. I really loved the feedback for my assignments, since it allows me to realize what I need to improve on and what I should keep doing. Unlike the previous semester, the writing professor only told us our grade on the very first assignment after two months. There were no feedback on how I could improve either, so I had no idea if I was having trouble with anything. Prior to this course, I always had trouble writing sentences and organizing them in such a way that flows and delivers my idea well. I also rarely outline or plan out how I will write a paper too, and even when I did, it was very vague. Out of the five learning outcomes, I grew the most in rhetoric knowledge and writing process from the reading responses and 4 assignment.
Up until this year, before taking the class intermediate composition, I thought I was a terrible writer. I was right. Writing isn’t something that I enjoy doing, nor am I good at. Writing is difficult for me because I’m not very good at explaining things in a professional manner, that can be easily well written. While writing you are expected to make little to no mistakes, which is not something I’m great at. I am so much better at explaining things with verbal words rather than written words. I had not taken any extra writing classes before this year rather than the mandatory ones. Like I had stated before, I hate writing, with a passion. I do believe the teachers were right about me rambling on in my papers and not placing sentences in the right order and I sometimes I don’t make sense. It’s probably one of my biggest struggle/problems that I hope to fix in the future. Think I’ve had a lot of breakthroughs in the class and I’m doing a lot better than I ever expected to do. Qualitative and quantitative instruments were used in obtaining data for this instructional problem. The first instrument used was quantitative, the instructor gave students a writing assignment, and when it was graded, it was clear that there was a problem with effective topic and thesis statements, as well as general organization of the paper. To be sure that this wasn’t an isolated problem, the second instrument was developed; a quantitative instrument that surveyed the teachers, asking for information on their students comprehensive writing skills.
I believe it is important for any student who wants to do their best in a class to take a moment to evaluate their own work to determine the rate their writing is progressing and how they can continue to advance their writing. When I looked through my own work I asked myself “what have I learned this semester?” and “what do I still need to learn in order to improve my writing?”. Answering both these questions will help me with my last step of my self-evaluation, developing a plan to learn new skills.
Over the course of the semester, I feel that I have grown as a writer in many ways. When I came into the class, there were skills I had that I already excelled at. During my time in class, I have come to improve on those skills even more. Before I took this class I didn’t even realise what I was good at. This is the first class where I felt I received feedback on my writing that helped me to actually review my work in see what areas I lacked in and where I succeeded. Some of the skills I had shocked me as I didn’t think I had those capabilities in me.
Coming into the semester, my writing skills were lacking. I never learned a proper writing process, and lacked the skills to revise my papers. I was used to turning in papers after writing them once, and then getting feedback after I received the grade. This was sad because I wasted so many years in high school where I could have improved my revision skills. Through WRA however, I have learned what a proper writing process looks like. Much like Benjamin Franklin believed, I feel that a person should take advantage of the time the person has in life with activities a person wants to do or needs to do. A person should not spend much time on activities the person does not want to do. Life is way too short to concern oneself with work or other activities one wants nothing to do with all the time. When possible, I try to forget about my responsibility and just let go of the ‘things’ that do not matter to me. I think a person should try to occupy oneself with something productive, worthwhile, or necessary at all times. Even though a person’s life is left up to a person to live, I cannot imagine thinking that I owe my time to society through working a job that I simply despise. I am a compassionate person, but I do not owe anyone anything regarding my time.
