Food Drive Essay
Did you know that 1 in 9 people in the world don’t have food security? That means about 795 million struggling people in this world; families, elderly, and young adolescents without proper meals.
795 million people hungry, and starving for days after days.
795 million people malnourished, weak and constantly facing sickness because they simply cannot afford food.
In the United States, there are approximately 50 million people food insecure. And amongst that 50 million americans, 17 million are children, hungry and weak from the lack of a meal. While many americans easily complain and waste food on a daily basis; being picky with their vegetables whether if their greens are organic or not, somewhere

Food donation Charities which are in Malden, for example , ‘The Bread of Life’ and our ‘Beebe School food drive’, we all try our best to help as much people as possible . This year, for the beebe food drive, the school committee asks the parents and guardians of Beebe school to donate any food to gather for donations. Things like boxes of cereal, dried or powdered milk, canned vegetables, and even marketplace gift cards can be a great help. This food drive will be conducted by the school committee, which includes students and staff who want to make a difference. Like any other food drives, the donated material gets transported to a charity to be rationed. Conducting the food drive will also bring the malden community together, as we will be working together to help many people. Although there are some disadvantages to a food drive, for example; donated food not always getting in the hands of the ones who need it. These things are unfortunate, but we have to keep in mind not everything is going to be the way we intended. It’s important to know that we are all helping someone, no matter how small the donation we make. Even the smallest difference can mean a lot and make someone else’s day, even though it may not seem like a lot. As Shakespeare once said,”How far that little candle throws its beams! So shines a good deed in a naughty world”, no matter how small your deed, you are still making someone’s day out there in the big cruel world. So, please, donate. Help. Contribute. The United States is one of the richest nations in the world and food is plentiful; fifty million people should not experience food insecurity. The problem is that people who live in poverty do not have access to enough food. Policies governing the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program need to be changed. The policies cannot be relaxed to the extent that everyone tries to get assistance, but they should be reasonable enough for a family provider to qualify for food stamps and hold a job which pays him enough to sustain a family. Legislators need to look at increase funding for programs like the National School Lunch Program in a manner in which NSLP does not have to compete with funding for budget items that have major lobbyists’ support. Funds to feed hungry children should not be a political budget item. The allocation of subsidies to farmers should also be revisited. Eighty-four percent of subsidies goes to commodity crops and only one percent goes to growers of fruits and vegetables. Even if they had the money to buy food, people living in poverty could not buy the healthier fruits and vegetables; they are too expensive. “If you only have a few dollars to eat, in other words, processed foods will fill you up far cheaper than fruits and vegetables,” (Horn par.12). The United States is known as the wealthiest country in the world. But, there are many people that can't afford to buy food for their families, many are also homeless. “While hunger affects people of all ages, it's particularly devastating for children even short-term episodes of hunger can cause lasting damage."(“Child Nutrition Programs") Child hunger in the United States is caused by poverty, unemployment, food insecurity, and food shortage; however there are many solutions to this problem like FRAC strategies, food banks, summer feeding programs, and backpack feeding programs.
The necessity of food has created one of the most powerful diseases in the health of today’s nation. According to the resent documentary (Silverbush 2012) it shows how obesity and hunger are closely related to one another. Obesity today has over taken what we know of most of the United States population. This phenomenon of unhealthy eating starts in children even before they start going to school. A large amount of today’s population is found living in the middle to lower class, creating complications when trying to support family’s with insufficient funds. When it becomes comes time to buy healthy foods for their family it becomes overlooked due to the high prices of fruits and vegetables. Times of scarcity lead the average American to buy cheap, unhealthy, quick and easy food products due to government subsidies. With food being an essential aspect to living it makes eating a necessity one cannot live without. Americans with low budgets are forced to buy products that are mass-produced. The high demand for food has caused a process in which food production has become degrading to the environment, the animals, the quality product itself, and the consumers. Large livestock farms create large amounts of animal waste that in turn producing noxious air emissions, water pollution, and potentially spreads risk of infections to humans. Billions of tons of polluting pesticides and fertilizers have destroyed waterways, are responsible for causing cancer, food-born illnesses and obesity, and are one of the many causes of global warming (Kallen, 2006). President Obama once said, “As the wealthiest nation on Earth, I believe the United States has a moral obligation to lead the fight against hunger and malnutrition, and to partner with others.” Food insecurity has always been an issue of the public as well as around the world. For so long, many generations of Americans have been living in poverty or in a low income state. It would be surprise as to how many Americans are living in poverty. As a result of this living situation, there are problems that arise with it. One of the problems is food insecurity. Poverty is regarded as the major cause of food insecurity. A household food security depends on access to food. America has access to good healthy food. However, a family too poor to buy them do not enjoy food security. Rosenbaum and Neuberger (2005) report that each year the number of people using government food assistance programs grows. “Food stamps are targeted to those with the greatest need for help in purchasing food… [and] helps to lessen the extent and severity of poverty (Rosenbaum and Neuberger 2005)”.
Food insecurity is an issue faced by millions of Americans every day, and the biggest group affected by this is working families with children. Food insecurity is so big that the United States government has now recognized it and provided a definition for it. The United States government has defined food insecurity as “a household level economic and social condition of limited or uncertain access to adequate food” (USDA.gov). Food banks and anti-hunger advocates agree that some of the causes of food insecurity are stagnant wages, increases in housing costs, unemployment, and inflation in the cost of food. These factors have caused food banks to see a change in the groups of people needing assistance.

Reliable access to nutritious foods is a principal concern for most individuals. Still, even in a prosperous country like the United States, a considerable number of citizens don’t consistently have this access. This problem is especially prevalent in lower-income, urban communities like those in the city of Philadelphia where food deserts, defined by the U.S. Department of Agriculture as areas “vapid of fresh fruit, vegetables, and other healthful whole foods,” are particularly common (). As the world population grows so does the amount of people that live without the proper amount of nutrition and food. Hunger in America can be hard to recognize and many people do not realize that hunger and malnutrition is a problem that many Americans face every day. America is the land of plenty and one of the most powerful and wealthy countries in the world, however is well known that is subject to problem such as starvation, considered as “third-world problem”. For decades, Americans have gone above and beyond to aid other countries that were faced with problems such as malnutrition and hunger. Sadly, the US has failed to aid them and millions are currently suffering from hunger. In addition, with how the economy is now, the effects of hunger are getting worse every day. Many Americans are relying and most of them depend on food stamps and private organizations to help with this crisis. The documentary, “A Place at the Table” by Kristi Jacobson and Lori Silverbush present some issues and real life story to explain what is really happening and how hunger and obesity are not problems on opposite ends of a spectrum, but are in fact intricately linked. Poor nutrition, health problem and poverty are all related.
The world that we live in is inevitably problem stricken. There will always be a challenge that we are given to overcome, may that be a natural disaster, war, poverty, hunger, etc. As a whole we need to come together to find a ‘solution’ for all of these issues that are so detrimental to this world and those living in it. Some may be more preventative than the others, however, we must work together in times of distress to rebuild. I will be addressing the problem of hunger and food insecurity in America. Food security is define by the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) as access by all people at all time to enough food for an active, healthy life. On the other hand, food insecurity is outlined very well by the National Research Council.
When considering the topic of poverty and hunger, many Americans look outside the borders of the United States. However, food insecurity is an issue that plagues millions of American households each year. The United States Department of Agriculture found that 14.5% of American households faced food insecurity during 2012. These households were defined as having “difficulty at some time during the year providing enough food for all their members due to a lack of resources” (Nord, Singh, Coleman-Jensen).
Action Against Hunger or AAH is a non-profit organization that does it’s best to help this global crisis. They help to save malnourished children along with families by providing communities with safe water and sustainable food sources. Giving food is one thing, but helping teach communities to survive on their own by giving resources like crops and such for the future; is something that causes long lasting results, not just temporary ones. AAH saves the lives of severely malnourished children while helping vulnerable communities become self-sufficient. They also provide emergency aid to people that are severely in need of medical care because of natural disasters or otherwise. Indeed, they are the main sources of food for millions of food-insecure Americans. Food insecurity, the state of not having sufficient quantity of affordable and nutritious food, is very widespread and common in America.
925 million people are living today without any breakfast, lunch or dinner. Day after day, they starve without any food. The worst part is that we don’t have enough food to feed the world today so how will we be able to feed the world in 2050 if the worlds population is supposed to grow by 7 billion people?! The world’s population will grow from 7 billion to about 9.6 billion by 2050 and food production will have to increase by 70 percent.
