Welcome to High School, Where you’re a little fish, in a gigantic ocean sized pond. Where we babysit your kids seven hours a day! After they walk through the school doors, they will excitedly be drowned in a long line of insults from both strangers and friends-just a normal, energizing way to begin the day! Not to mention the fact that public schools are scheduled when students are most engrossed and ready to learn anything you throw at them! This helps students with releasing their full potential and increasing test scores. It is proven that students retain more when they’re half asleep.
Let me take you on a tour of the school; Welcome to the glorious bathroom! If you look to your left you’ll see the beautiful inscriptions of students from hall to hall. This is where we find out crucial information such as who likes who etc… if you’ll look to your right you’ll see a torn up piece of paper towel that someone was too lazy to throw away. Hey! They’re good for decoration! Just remember to keep your hands and feet as close to you as possible...And don’t touch anything.
Here is on...
I couldn’t see staff in the office, nor were there any students in the hallway or in the classrooms. The entire school is empty. Must be a day off or something, I thought, blinking in surprise. Suddenly, I recognized the building. Just last week, I visited the exact same campus.
It was 8:45am on Tuesday, October 20th, 2015: The toddler classroom environment is open and well organized. The room has three sections. When first entering the room the first area near the door is open. A tan carpeted floor covers the area. To the right of the door, was a metal trashcan with a lid. The room leads into an open back room where the changing table is. To the right of the changing table is a small bathroom with off-white painted walls. The walls have a few pink and purple flowers painted on. The changing table has a bottom shelf underneath to hold the various sized diapers. Next to the changing table is a wooden shelf that held other supplies such as baby wipes, cleaning wipes, more packages of diapers, and some extra soft
How many times has this happened to you; it’s six thirty on a Tuesday morning, your alarm has already gone off twice, your still laying in bed and your bus comes in twenty minutes. This is an everyday occurrence at my house. It is a proven statistic that the average high school student does not get enough sleep. While some experts like Dr. Lee Yanku say “It is not the schools starting time that is the problem as to why students don’t get enough sleep, it is because of facebook, myspace and cell phones” The truth behind it is that we can’t budget sports, homework and extracurricular activities into one day and still get nine hours of sleep. This is hurting student’s academic averages and needs to change. Changing the school time will help boost academic averages among students, and isn’t th...
Wow, three years have passed and the last day is just as long as the first. Three years of hard discipline and learning to get used to homework every night. Three years of standing on the front steps waiting for my parents and saying goodbye to my teachers. I never thought the goodbye might be permanent. 6th grade came and I was looking up at those giant 8th graders, and now I guess I’m one of them. 6th grade, and I was saying hello, and now 8th grade has come and it’s gone from introductions to goodbyes as my last days as a middle school student wind down.
That means that the first three classes that students are learning in, their brain isn’t fully there. If a student has three of their hardest classes the first three hours of the day, then they really aren’t focused on what they are learning about. A 2015 survey finds that U.S. schools start “too early”. “Five out of every Six United States middle and high schools have starting times before eight thirty [in the morning]. [Starting before this time can reduce student’s efforts], adolescents who do not get enough sleep are more likely to become overweight, not [get] enough physical activity, suffer from depression symptoms, engage in inappropriate activities, and perform poorly in school” (Yeager). Sleep is needed for students to have good health, but they aren’t getting enough. If you walk into any school, you’ll notice that most of the kids that are trying to
Among adolescents and teenagers lack of sleep has become an epidemic. Teenagers believe that sleep is expendable when, in reality, it is extremely important for teens to receive sufficient sleep. Alexandra Robbins argues in her book, The Overachievers: The Secret Lives of Driven Kids, that teenagers are willing to sacrifice sleep for success and that this way of thinking is harmful to adolescent development. It is because of this way of thinking and the negative effect it has, that the start time of high schools should be pushed back. Through evidence provided by Robbins and an outside source, it can be asserted that the start time of high schools should be pushed back.
One of the many arising problems of America’s students is they are becoming sleep deprived. The busy daily schedules of children and teens are not allowing them to get enough sleep. “Less sleep is unhealthy especially with the new research that as teenagers move through teenage years, they need increasing amounts of sleep. Nine hours per night is the necessary amount to avoid behaviors associated with sleep deprivation” (Final Report Summary, 2001). Among other things, sleep deprivation is causing students to sleep during class instead of being awake and aware. When the students are sleeping in class, they are not retaining information being taught to them. Researchers have now proven that the majority of adolescents retain more information later in the day. Contrary to this information, America’s school systems are programmed to begin early in the day, which according to the sleep rhythms of most teenagers, they should still be sleeping.
This is what you might see in most of the schools on the first day of school: lost freshmen guided by reliable senior sisters and brothers to classrooms. But McIntosh has a distinct tradition of how freshmen would be welcomed: stickers and glitters.
The principal’s office was a dull area. The walls were an ugly tan color, not unlike the classic Band-Aids color. The ladies in the office tried to liven up the place with potted plants and assorted posters, but it just didn’t work. Mr. Taff summoned me into his lair.
Introduction Sleep studies have been conducted since as early as 1913. However, the impact of school start times on student academics is often overlooked by most schools. In reality, start times can significantly affect academic performance by disrupting adolescents' normal sleep cycle, leading to a lack of sleep that impairs learning, and hindering academic performance. These theories have been tested through sleep studies, and most of them have been found to be true. Sleep Cycle Changes When children transition from primary school to middle or high school, it can significantly affect their learning due to changes in their sleep cycle.
Fifty six percent of students report being tired throughout the school day, which can lead to missed information and confusion (Wysong). According to this statistic, over half the students in class are not going to achieve their maximum learning potential in school. In order to avoid this problem, a teenager's brain typically needs to sleep from 11:00 pm to 8:00 am (“High schools starting later to help sleepy teens”). However, most high schools require students to be in class as early as 7:15 or 7:30 am. As a result, many adolescents simply do not have the opportunity to get enough rest. Changing the traditional school time to start later in the day will benefit adolescent sleep cycles, promote learning, and prevent disease by regulating the body. Ideally,...
An anonymous author once said, "What you need to know about the past is that no matter what has happened, it has all worked together to bring you to this very moment. And this is the moment you can choose to make everything new. Right now." Over the course of my school years, it has been an exciting and shocking experience. These experiences have been an enjoyable journey from my elementary to middle school years. However, after several years the end of my middle school adventure is coming to a close. Soon my new journey will start as a freshman. Eight grade will surely be one of my most memorable years. It has been an absolute wonderful one hundred eighty days, and I will miss some of the aspects of eight grade—but certainly not all of it.
towards the man entrance. I thought to myself, ‘Why does the school have all the
It was finally the first day of school; I was excited yet nervous. I hoped I would be able to make new friends. The first time I saw the schools name I thought it was the strangest name I’ve ever heard or read, therefore I found it hard to pronounce it in the beginning. The schools’ floors had painted black paw prints, which stood out on the white tiled floor. Once you walk through the doors the office is to the right. The office seemed a bit cramped, since it had so many rooms in such a small area. In the office I meet with a really nice, sweet secretary who helped me register into the school, giving me a small tour of the school, also helping me find
Fun, scaring, exciting are the feelings of my first week of school. This is a brand new experience of my life having to leave my friends and teachers in middle school behind. New school, new friends and new teachers are all part of this new school year. This one is different though, it’s the first week of high school.
