Students all over the country are falling into debt due to high college tuition rates. Many scholars have stated that a college education is the new high school diploma; however, for many students, a college education is unattainable because of tuition rates. Scholarships are extremely competitive and end up going to either low­ income students or high­income students. Due to this, a few states have started programs granting students the first two years at an in­state community college free. In modern society, a college diploma is essential, but many students opt out of a college education because tuition is unaffordable. Therefore, to ease the burden of college education on students and families, a system should be in place to make college tuition free to those who take it seriously.
Jason Delisle of the of the American Enterprise Institute says “Both colleges and students need to have “some skin in the game” about the cost and quality of education. Without economic pressure “it really lets colleges and students off the hook”” (Price). With state and federal governments already withdrawing support from higher education schools, colleges are struggling to find the funds to continue running without boosting the price of tuition. Since the 1970s the government has pulled a quarter of funding from colleges. Even though the government is conscious of what is happening, the blame is being placed on the misuse of funds within the college. If tuition were free, colleges would not be under this much scrutiny for the decisions being made.
