Apple co-founder and CEO, Steve Jobs, can be portrayed as one of the greatest innovators and ambitious businessmen of the 21 century. The purpose of this essay is to explain how Steve Jobs’ ingenuity and driven nature personifies a visionary leader responsible for reinvigorating the entertainment and technology industry. I will also expound upon the events in his life which lead him to make unethical decisions based upon his personal principles. Finally, I will talk about how his visionary leadership, his unfavorable and at times unethical behavior drove his employees to work even harder. Let’s us begin by explain how he displayed visionary leadership qualities.
Steve Jobs has been described as a driven and determined individual, who invisioned products that would make humans day-to-day activities simpler. His work ethic can be traced back to his younger years. After a semester in college, he decided to drop-out and only attended the occasional calligraphy classes. At 21, he and his friend Steve Wozniak began building Apple computers out of his parent’s garage. During this time computers were massive, unattractive and expensive; however, they ended up selling these Apple computers for $677. A perfectionist, he wanted an easier to use computer capable of expanding usage to a customer’s needs. His narcissistic behavior, inability to compromise and transactional leadership of Management by Exception-Active led the company he co-founded to dismiss him, ultimately leaving him job less (CF02, 2012, pg. 13). In the speech it states, “……… he’s been called a visionary, a creative genius, a rebel, a non-conformist, an original, the greatest CEO ever, the best innovator of all time.” In the article it states, “He was intensely focused when committed, confident enough to take risky leaps, and charismatic enough to enlist legions of employees and customers in the restless pursuit of his aspirations.” Both texts describe the traits of Steve Jobs which made him the greatest CEO of our age. The selection of contemporary leader book was challenging at first, however after considering the attributes and qualities of different leadership styles Steve Jobs: Ten lessons in leadership written by Michael Essany was the best choice. This book discussed what can be learned as a leader and the lessons are relevant to my own leadership style. There is a direct relationship of the lessons and Steve Jobs’ leadership style identified including wait for nothing, fail big or don’t bother failing, limit your confidence to your field, there’s no substitute for passion, consider your legacy before you have one, and there’s always ‘one more thing’ (Essany, 2012). The lessons illustrated that Steve Jobs was progressive in his thinking and relentless to develop technological advancements that consumers could not live without. Therefore, Steve Jobs leadership style was influential and other entrepreneurs need to utilize these lessons in pursuit of similar success.

We think Steve Jobs was a successful leader because he was imaginative, passionate about his job, he had the ability to push employees to create new things, had confidence, and believed in collaboration. Under Steve Jobs' leadership Apple was an innovative company and under Tim Cook's leadership Apple is now being seen as more of charitable, socially and ethically responsible company. While [he’s heard the repeated refrains that “Apple can’t innovate under Tim,” that the company needed a low-cost iPhone to thwart the progress of Google’s Android, that Cook never could replicate the Jobs magic—and therefore that Apple never again would be “insanely great.” ] (Lashinsky, 2015), he hasn’t changed his methods since Jobs’ passing and continues to lead in a way that he believes will raise Apple’s value in the eyes of society.
