Apple co-founder and CEO, Steve Jobs, can be portrayed as one of the greatest innovators and ambitious businessmen of the 21 century. The purpose of this essay is to explain how Steve Jobs’ ingenuity and driven nature personifies a visionary leader responsible for reinvigorating the entertainment and technology industry. I will also expound upon the events in his life which lead him to make unethical decisions based upon his personal principles. Finally, I will talk about how his visionary leadership, his unfavorable and at times unethical behavior drove his employees to work even harder. Let’s us begin by explain how he displayed visionary leadership qualities.

Steve Jobs has been described as a driven and determined individual, who invisioned products that would make humans day-to-day activities simpler. His work ethic can be traced back to his younger years. After a semester in college, he decided to drop-out and only attended the occasional calligraphy classes. At 21, he and his friend Steve Wozniak began building Apple computers out of his parent’s garage. During this time computers were massive, unattractive and expensive; however, they ended up selling these Apple computers for $677. A perfectionist, he wanted an easier to use computer capable of expanding usage to a customer’s needs. His narcissistic behavior, inability to compromise and transactional leadership of Management by Exception-Active led the company he co-founded to dismiss him, ultimately leaving him job less (CF02, 2012, pg. 13). Jobs was not a software engineer, he was did specialize in programing he concentrated on the user interface and the design of a product. According to the Full Range Leadership Development student guide Laissez-Faire leaders “abandon or pass on their responsibilities, fail to respond urgently to critical situations, remain indifferent toward important issues” (CF02SG-12, 2012, pg. 12). This type of leadership would have hindered the steadfast progression of this company. He has made life so much simpler for all generations. Military personnel use iPads to access regulations where a laptop is not feasible, students have the ability to access their textbooks with a touch of a button and children are easily entertained by endless amount of games available. Steve Jobs is an individual who saw endless possibilities and never settled for anything but the best.
