In the past, plagiarism was practiced as a means of desperation or necessity, instead of out of pure laziness as it tends to be today. Now, with the development of the Internet, there are many websites that offer tips, sources for papers, along with papers that have already been written and submitted to the website. All of these can be free for download, or if you need a special kind of paper, it can be made specifically for a price ranging between $8.95 and $20.00 per page. All these illegitimate recourses are available to a person who is able to navigate around the Web.[i] Along with this, there are also ways for teachers and professors to track down the sources of suspected Internet plagiarism. This paper will include information on both of these subjects.
A student looking for legitimate topics for a research paper could type any relevant word into a search engine and find hundreds of websites containing written documents that have information, which the student could include in his or her paper. But, with the technology available today, the same student has the option to “cut and paste” the written text into his or her own paper until he or she has enough information to fill the entire paper, without doing any research for themselves. Using anyone else’s words or ideas without attribution is plagiarism, and if these students do not give reference to the people who wrote the information, they fall grounds to it. ii

Technology is one of the most important things in everyone’s life. Technology improves every day. in regards to today’s youth, they were born with all the new technological inventions as opposed to our parents. In “Quality Time, Redefined” by Alex Williams, published in the New York Times, the author talks about the positive and negative effects on technology. I enjoyed this reading because it related my personal day to day life. Even though some Americans acknowledge that technology is a part of their everyday life, they do not see the negative outcome of technology, they are blinded only by the positive aspects.
When Christopher Langan’s brother is explaining why Chris did not succeed in school, he says that, “The issue with Chris is that he was always too bored to actually sit there and listen to his teachers” (Gladwell 110). A problem that exists is that students are having trouble concentrating in school and paying attention. These students are more amused by all the technology that could be used instead of paying attention, and they feel that it would help them and entertain them more than listening to teachers talk. This trouble concentrating is also noticeable when employees at work think that because of technology, they do not have to think and remember as much information because they can just look it up or type it in on their phones or tablets to remember it. This may eventually lead to a disadvantage when finding other jobs and achieving the American Dream because the other companies may not use the technology that some people are so used to using.
James Joyce author of Dubliners, is a book which examines the everyday life of people who live in Dublin. In this intimate portrayal of Dubliners, Joyce writes short stories about the individuals in Irish society. In Dubliners many characters feel the pressure of society, and show their desires to escape. In the stories “Eveline”, “Counterparts” and “The Dead”, the themes of individuals v. society and journey through escape are present. In each story there is a powerful person present that controls a particular person or situation. In Dublin jobs are very important, since they control the social standing in their society. Dublin itself is a major issue to the characters in Dubliners; they wrestle with the ideas of being able to escape.
Can you imagine how children do not seem to have any problems in learning how technology works now? It happens that almost every kid has their own laptop, cell phone, iPads or any other electronic devices. Who does not want to live in this world where doing homeworks and making your job much easier, right? If children nowadays are too lucky to have and learn these things while they are young, most of us grew up and experienced the life without technology. In "My Technologically Challenged Life" by Monica Wunderlich, she talked about the different struggles she had experienced in her house, school, workplace, and her car due to the lack of technology.

While admitting the power of technology, he also points out the adverse effects of excessive use of technology in the education system. He states, “Computers make our worst educational nightmare come true” (279). According to him, improper or overuse of computers hinders learning ability. He reports that over the past few years, computers have been assumed to be a necessity in America’s classrooms and introduced to children from elementary levels. However, technology can be addictive, and students may overuse it, leading to a drop in educational standards.

Many students are using technology to cheat because they are able to find answers quickly online by just searching for them. Cheating is increasing in the United States at higher rates because many of the students in high school or in college have to deal with different responsibilities, pressure, and loads of different types of work. Richard Perez Peña states in “Studies Find More Students Cheating,” “Internet access has made cheating easier, enabling students to connect instantly with answers, friends to consult and works to plagiarize.” Plagiarism, which means using a work of someone else as if it were yours, is the most common form of cheating in high school and in college. Plagiarism occurs by not citing a source correctly or by not putting the proper quotation marks on a quote that you borrow to state your point. Some students don’t even know what plagiarism is, and they do it using the technology that we have today. Therefore, Julie Rasicot states, “High schools and teachers should make clear what constitutes plagiarism, how to avoid it and what the consequences will be if students are caught.” If students are not informed about plagiarism, then they tend to use technology as an easy way to do an assignment, which prevents them from learning. Writing enables James Joyce the power to belittle not only Dublin, but to express his lack of affiliation with the Catholic Church. In Dubliners, Joyce paints the picture of a town filled with greed, both sexually and financially. He takes the definition of religion and turns it on itself. Joyce shows no mercy on his path to ridicule Dublin’s pride and historical roots. In a number of the stories Joyce depicts man as an infection in Dublin. Most of the time men will be at fault or the root of a problem. Joyce also has little difficulty writing about an imperfect Dublin, one that when spoken about only draws countless gasps.
James Joyce's fragment of a novel, Stephen Hero, leaves the reader little room to interpret the text for themselves. The work lacks the narrative distance that Joyce achieves in his later works. Dubliners, a work Joyce was writing concurrently, seemingly employs a drastically different voice. A voice which leaves the reader room to make judgments of their own. Yet it is curious that Joyce could produce these two works at the same time, one that controls the reader so directly, telling not showing , while the other, Dubliners, seems to give the reader the power of final interpretation over the characters it portrays.
Andy Carvin states “ internet access in schools isn’t worth a hill of beans if teachers aren’t prepared to take full advantage of technology” (2000). Schools spend a lot of money on computer hardware and software as well as other technologies without realizing that many of their employees are unprepared to include them in their teaching and use them to their advantages. Educators often use technology as a classroom management tool rather than an educational one, allowing computer time as a reward for good behavior (Clark & Gorski, 2001). The problem with this is that students learn to use the computer for games and such because it is their reward instead of using it on their own time for educational purposes. This is teaching them the wrong idea. Margaret Honey, director of the Center for Children and Technology in NYC said it best, “The bottom line is, you don’t just put technology into schools or into homes and expect miracles to happen. The technology is only as good as the program that surrounds it” (Meyer, 2002, p.2).
