How Peter Medak Gains the Viewer's Sympathy for Derek Bentley
Peter Medak made this film to show what he thinks happened in the
case. He also made this film to show what happens from Derek
Bentley’s point of view.
The film that Medak made is biased in favour of Derek Bentley. Medak
made the film in such a way that the viewer feels sympathy for
Bentley.
The film is about Derek Bentley who is mentally challenged. He meets
a gangster called Chris Craig. They both try to break into the
warehouse, but they are caught by the police. Derek & Chris are both
found guilty. Derek Bentley the older of the two was hanged and Chris
was sent to prison.
The film that Medak had created started with Derek under a pile of
rubble and people taking the rubble off him. The camera zooms into
his face and the frame is filled with his face. The scene where Derek
is in the approved school is very effective at gaining the viewer’s
sympathy. The lighting is low key which makes the mood of the
approved school sombre. The camera zooms into Derek sitting with his
head down, which shows that he is sad and the school is very scary.
While Derek is sitting outside headmaster’s office, he can hear his
father and the headmaster talking about him which in turn makes the
viewers feel in sympathy for him. When Derek and his father leave the
school, Derek is in front of the big door which makes him look small
and insignificant.
Derek and his sister Iris have a very close relationship. They both
dance together and talk together. Iris is not only sister to Derek
but acts as a mother to Derek as well. This shows us that Derek is a
calm and loving person and does not look like a law offender.
Derek loves the song “Wheel of Fortune”. We see Derek to the music
shop to buy the song.
In the short story “The Hunter” the author Richard Stark introduces Parker, the main character of this book. The main character is a rough man, he’s a criminal, a murderer, and even an escaped convict. He’s described as crude and rugged and though women are frightened by him, they want him. Parker is not the classic criminal, but rather he’s intelligent, hard, and cunning. In this story the author carefully appeals to his audience by making a loathsome criminal into a hero, or rather, an anti-hero. The author, Richard Stark uses ethical appeal to make his audience like Parker through the use of phronesis, arête, altruism and lastly the ethos of his audience.
Although it may be natural human behavior when stripped from civilization, how the boys' behavior has changed morally based on their situation is the main part of the destruction on the island. One thing is that the boys on the island were not willing to go after and help each other. The bystander effect engaged, they let all these horrible things happen to each other without taking action to stop it and get things under control. This quote shows us an example of how the bystander effect was happening while Jack and his tribe were killing Simon: “Again the blue-white scar jagged above them and the sulphurous explosion beat down. The littluns screamed and blundered about, fleeing from the edge of the forest, and one of them broke the ring of biguns in
In the novel The Power of One, the main character, Peekay, is a very complex character who through a perilous and difficult journey is able to achieve the power of one a concept that means through personal struggle a single person is able to change the world for the better. The novel is a summary of Peekay’s life through his early childhood to young adulthood and throughout these years Peekay developes a many traits and qualities that contribute to his gaining of the power of one and through the continuous development of these traits Peekay, in turn, achieves the power of one and becomes the best version of himself. While a number of things contribute to the achievement of the power of one, three traits that Peekay obviously demonstrates are

Kafka’s The Trial delves into the life of Josef K., a bank worker who gets himself tied up in an unknown trial, against an indefinable and ultimately unaccountable legal system. While the piece is a work of fiction it parallels many of the legal problems in existence during the period in which Kafka was writing and to an extent gives a fictitious account of many real events going on. Many parallels can be seen in the trials of Alfred Dreyfus, Oscar Wilde, John Scopes and Nikolai Bukharin in various ways. The book indirectly questions legal principals such as an accessible system and a clear understanding of the process. Fundamentally these principles are missing from the other real trials in question, and represent in most cases a serious miscarriage of justice.
The mother in this passage would be the minor character. Although she is departed from the brothers, she often has influence on the good minded brother. He never met his mother and he still created the sun and the moon out of her orb. This means that the good minded brother had respect for his dead mother and cared for her deeply, while the bad minded brother is the one who brought death upon her. This is just one heartless action of the bad minded brother. He has no care for others which is expressed throughout this

The members of this family presented characteristics of many untraditional gender roles. This movie consisted a nuclear family, including a mother (Carolyn), father (Woody), four sons (Clinton, Wendell, Nate & Joseph), a daughter (Troy), and along with their family treasured dog (Mutley). Carolyn was depicted as the sole breadwinner for the family. She participated in a few gender roles in her family such as, a masculine figure holding authority in the household and a feminine figure that depicts care and unconditional love. She was also a mother figure to the kids outside her home. For example, she talked to the children on the streets and looked out her window to the children. In the late 70’s, it was typical for the male gender to be known as the breadwinner and we saw the switch of gender role in this movie when the wife was characterized as the provider of the family and not the husband. Throughout the movie, Troy took on different gender roles too. It is Troy, who acts as caretaker, who assumes the traditional defined, desirable feminine role.” After Troy visits her mother from the hospital, she showed a change of character, from a child to an adult. She became the caretaker. She cleaned the house, mopped, and did the dishes like what her mother asked her to do prior to her illness. When her mother died she took the mother role. For instance, she became more

Sympathy is the feeling of pity and sorrow for someone else’s misfortune. All of these characters have been through some rough stuff, but it’s your opinion on who you feel the most sympathy for. In the book of mice and men by Steinbeck many characters in the book had something bad happen to them. Every character does deserve sympathy because this book isn’t a fairy tale it’s more realistic because not every story has a happy ending. The author john Steinbeck is from a small city in California called Salinas the setting of this book was at his hometown. The book is about how lennie and George are working from city to city to get money, but lennie is like crazy from the head. George knows he can do better without him, but lennie can't maintain himself he needs help. These people are the main characters. There are
...ate is baggage and it’s not worth it.” Although Derek is extremely upset by the death of his brother it is safe to say that he was a least proud that he had died not in hatred but as a new person. Just as how the old Derek had gone away and came back as a new person.
In the two poems Crabbit Old Woman and Piano, both the writers use language to provoke sympathy towards a person and their situation by using the present and the past tense to build up emotions.
