This is a story about how my family and I survived the Dust Bowl storm in oklahoma. It was My Ma, Murrie, my Pa, Roy , My two brothers, Ray and Riley, Then there was my dog skipper last but not least there was me, Bonnie. The dust bowl happened in 1930. When i was sitting at the diner table i saw a black cloud rolling in i told my parents about. That's when we took shelter. We are going to have to start this from the beginning for you to understand. It all started when i was seven years old, my family and i lived on a farm in oklahoma. Ma, pa, my brother, and i were all sitting at the dinner table it was around 5 so it was still light outside. I noticed this really dark cloud cloud coming in from the North East. When i told my Ma and Pa about it they told us to go get some wet towels. After that my brothers and i were confused we didn't understand why Ma was putting wet towels in the cracks of the doors and windows or even why she made us wear wet towels over our mouths and nose. Everything was crazy, my dog, Skippers freaked out. I held a wet towel over Skippers mouth and nose too. I figured it was because my towel fell off my face when i was asleep so i picked the towel up to put back over my face. At this time i was very weak. Terrified that i was going to die. Finally i picked up the towel it was hardened and dry it kinda felt as if you were picking up dried up lizard off the ground of the desert. Scared for my life i kick Ma to wake her up. She instantly regenized i was having trouble breathing. Ma ran to the kitchen sink put my towel under the cold, peaceful water. By the time she put the rag to my face it was filled with dirt. The “Dust Bowl: The Southern Plains in the 1930s”, was written by Donald Worster, who admits wanted to write the book for selfish reasons, so that he would have a reason o visit the Southern Plains again. In the book he discusses the events of the “dirty thirties” in the Dust Bowl region and how it affected other areas in America. “Dust Bowl” was a term coined by a journalist and used to describe the area that was in the southern planes in the states of Kansas, Colorado, New Mexico, Oklahoma and Texas, between the years of 1931 and 1939. This area experienced massive dust storms, which left dust covering everything in its wake. These dust storms were so severe at times that it made it so that the visibility in the area was so low to where people
In the book Dust Bowl: The Southern Plains in the 1930s the author, Donald Worster, makes the argument that the Dust Bowl was a mostly a direct result of farmer’s methods and misuse of the fragile plains environment. However, there were many other largely contributing factors to the Dust Bowl. While the farmer’s methods played a role, other factors such as economic decline, unusually high temperatures, an extended drought accompanied by and economic depression, and the resulting wind erosion were all factors that help explain The Dust Bowl.
The book The Worst Hard Time describes my experience on trying to get through this book but somehow almost made me grateful that even as difficult and exhausting as it was in actuality there was nothing worse, difficult or exhausting than living through the dust bowl storms in the 1930’s which luckily I did not do. If you ever feel ungrateful or depressed about something in your life just read this book and you will know that most problems now a days in the United States don’t compare to the hardships and loss of loved ones who died during the dust storms in the 1930s. The people who inhabited the dust bowl area which consisted of Texas, New Mexico, Oklahoma, Colorado and Kansas where sold an Idea of the American dream of owning property
Throughout many student’s school career they will have read various books for several of their classes. Out of the Dust might have been one of those books, but for those who haven’t read it yet I recommend you make an effort to read it as soon as possible. This novel gives you great insight into what it was like to live during The Dust Bowl and all the hardships people went through in that time period. Furthermore, it displays the story in free-verse. Another thing that this novel shows is to persevere through hard times.
Thunder rolled intensely outside, my aunt, mother, sister and I were sat calmly in the basement. We had been through this many times before; I mean afterall, Kansas was part of Tornado Alley. 2. My sister and I were young when this happened, her probably four or five, me about eight. 3. Before we had even started driving to my aunt’s house; since she’s the only one with a basement; my sister and I were complaining about being hungry. 4. Mom said she would get us something to eat soon, but then the sirens started blaring. 5. She called my aunt and told her we would be over in about ten minutes. 6. Me and my sister continued to complain about being hungry because, we always had to get what we wanted. 7. So my mom stopped at McDonald’s and got us some food. 8. After we were almost five minutes later than we said we would be my aunt panicked. 9. Jenny, my aunt, was calling like crazy. 10. When we finally got to her house she lectured my mom about how it wasn’t safe to have us out there like that with a tornado in the area. 11.Afterwards, we all sat on the porch and watched the storm. 12. That’s my favorite memory with my family, and it’s one I’ll never forget.
It was the 1930, one of the most devastating years in history of the United States. It was a normal day at school. Everyone excited for the first day of school. Days and months passed and things seemed to be getting different. No rain, water, or food. Lucy, an 18 year old attending Education High school. Gathered her belongings and headed to her house. Weeks passed and there was no sign of rain. Many kids went to school sick and tired. October 17,1931 Lucy was sitting next to the teacher, and suddenly she saw a huge amount of dust approaching the school. Overall, many humans and animals were impacted severely, even killed from the Dust Bowl of the 1930’s. This included several cattle, sheep, horses, chickens, and many other farm animals. The crops and farms all suffered a great loss and the homes and the people that lived inside of them also suffered a great upheaval of their familiar lives. This ruined many people’s jobs and ways to make a living. All together, this was a very traumatic experience for all of the people involved.
Imagine standing outside trying to farm your dying crops. All of a sudden, the sky gets dark. You look up and see a big, black cloud heading straight towards your town. You attempt to seek shelter, but it is too late. Cars come to a complete stop, and people rush to get cover. The cloud of dirt sweeps into your small town, and you can no longer see anything but only feel the gritty dirt blowing against your skin. This occurrence is what people experienced during the Dust Bowl. Being a kid in Oklahoma during the dust bowl wasn’t the greatest. Every morning, no matter the weather conditions, the kids would have to milk their cows, and feed all the farm animals (A Child's Life During the Dust Bowl). The walks to and from school were never easy. They would walk several miles, and it would always be very windy. Sometimes the kids would have no choice but to walk backwards because the wind was that bad.
