How Junk Food Can End Obesity?

Michael Pollan and David Freedman are two reputable authors who have written about different types of food and why they are healthy or why they are damaging to our health. Michael Pollan wrote “Escape from the Western Diet” and David Freedman wrote “How Junk Food Can End Obesity”. Imagine Pollan’s idea of a perfect world. Everything is organic. McDonald’s is serving spinach smoothies and Walmart is supplying consumers with raw milk. The vast majority of food in this world consists of plants grown locally, because almost everyone is a farmer in order to keep up with supply and demand. How much does all this cost? What happened to all the food that is loved just because it tastes good? Now imagine Freedman’s idea of a perfect world. Everyone is eating fast food at least ten times a week, because there are the same amounts of fats, sugars, sodium, and carbohydrates in processed foods as in organic foods. Our bodies cannot tell the difference between chemically engineered ingredients and organic ingredients. So what is the big deal? We can all eat whatever we want; we do not have to worry about the impact of processed foods on our bodies here. Now doesn’t that sound nice? Both Pollan’s “Escape from the Western Diet” and Freedman’s “How Junk Food Can End Obesity” contain many flaws. Neither worlds are the perfect food Utopia. Some people, like Pollan, focus on eating strictly to live. Others, like Freedman, are living to eat. It is critical to eat organic foods that have not been tampered with by hormones, preservatives, or antibiotics. Many people automatically assume that the main problem with processed foods are the amounts of calories, fats, sodium, and carbohydrates that they contain. Considering some organic foods are liable to... ... middle of paper ... ...he way that I am, then they should be able to eat whatever they want to eat. However, one problem with this mindset is that many medical conditions can go undiagnosed for a long time. Some people may live their entire lives with an undiagnosed medical condition. If these people only ate processed foods it may result in more serious medical problems or even death. Obesity is not the main issue in this processed versus organic food fight. Once Americans learn how to eat healthier, weight loss will come naturally. Organic foods are not healthier than processed foods because of nutrient content. Organic foods are much healthier because they do not have preservatives, antibiotics, or hormones. It is important for the human body to obtain organic nutrients rather than scientifically engineered nutrients in order to be healthy and this will ultimately end in losing weight.
