When Isadora was six, she and her sister Elizabeth began to teach children in their neighbourhood movements, this was the beginning of Isadora’s career as a dance teacher and is what began everything. In the 1920s, many grand events were experienced by the population. A short time before the start of the Great Depression, this decade was one of prohibition, lavish parties, flappers; and also of the Great Migration. The Great Migration was a time period from 1917 to 1970, during which much of the African American population moved from the southern states, to more urbanized northern communities (Great Migration). While many relocated to the Detroit area because of the booming automotive industries like Ford, some moved to other metropolitan areas such as Chicago, Illinois, and New York City. The surge of the Great Migration helped to initiate what is now known as the Harlem Renaissance. The Harlem Renaissance was a period of great accomplishments for the African American community; from music, to art and poetry, and even to dance. Martha Graham is a one of the many 20th century important dancer and she’s also the mother of modern dance. She was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania on May 11 1894. Her teen years she studied dance in Los Angeles. Where she studied was at Denishawn. In 1926 she then had her own dance company in New York City. Martha still was dancing when she was 60 and she also choreographed. In the Autobiography by Victoria Phillips Martha Graham saids this about her Autobiography, “I am not out to make a preach about my life. Some of it has been wonderful and I’ve been very, very fortunate some of it I regret. The things which are, perhaps, too private to ever reveal—one refuses to reveal.” (Phillips 65).
Every dance that is created by a choreographer has a meaning and or purpose behind it. The dance choreographed could be used to send a political, emotional, or a social message. Regardless of the message being sent, each dance created possesses a unique cultural and human significance. This essay will examine and analyze two dance works from history and give an insight into what each dance work provided to the society of its time.
The fine art of modern dance is like many other fields in that it is based on the actions and deeds of those who were pioneers in the field. These pioneers helped to mold modern dance into what it is today. Of the many people who are partially responsible for this accomplishment is Isadora Duncan. Duncan, often referred to as the “mother of modern dance,” inspired many other dancers to the extent that the art of dance would not be the same today without her many contributions.
Contact improvisation is a modern dance form where two people move while maintaining a connection. It originated from portions of Steve Paxton’s movement studies, which he began in 1972 at Oberlin College. As with every major event that happens in the world, the introduction and investigation of contact improvisation affected everyone in society one way or another.
