Techniques are used in various ways in a speech to: convince, influence and connect with the audience. These tools make a speech effective because it supports the argument of the speaker making it credible and appealing to the audience. President Barack Obama touches on several of his many accomplishments and addresses the three main issues that our country has or has had: our economy, education, and creating jobs. President Obama was able to decrease debt in our economy while creating numerous jobs for people in our nation. He also increased high-school graduation rates and brought credibility to his plan of establishing community colleges without the need of paying for college in the near future. Ethos also provides ethical appeal to the speaker’s background ensuring their position and authority. President Obama’s points where apparent and presented eloquently. His talk was effective and listenable due to who he is and where his speech was delivered. Obama spoke ethically to the audience, he begins by mentioning the changes that he has made so far as President of the United States such as: decreasing debate, creating jobs, highest high school graduation rates, and his goal to establish free community college. Conforming his credibility and successful position as President of the United States to his audience, proving he was able to change this nation for the better. Obama further articulates credibility to his audience, displaying his will and able to “veto” any bill that he believes will not benefit this nation in the future. During his speech he mentions his plan to end terrorist’s attacks and lend a helping hand to other countries in need, “assisting people everywhere who stand up to bankrupt ideology of violent extremism.” Obama speaks with honesty to his audience, expressing his morality of helping other countries in need not only there nation. Obama also spoke about “leveling the playing field”, that everyone meaning every country should agree on fair rules or play by the same rules. Obama displays honesty to his audience by thinking about the interest of others, not just about himself, he wants to play fair and help other nations in need as well.
