The Book, “To Kill a Mockingbird” describes three young characters named Scout, Jem, and Atticus. Each one of the characters had a different perspective on how they portrayed reading. The characters had their own way of how to read and comprehend. Scout sees reading as fun and interesting until she meets Miss Caroline, because she’s a good reader and in her opinion, she is being taught the wrong way. She has a negative reaction to reading in school. She would rather have fun reading with her farther at home and doing it her way rather than reading the wrong way and being taught the wrong way as well. Jem is a round character because throughout the story several of his character traits are revealed. A few character traits revealed are Jem is brave, kind-hearted and stalwart. Therefore, Jem is a round character. Firstly, Jem is a round character because reveals his bravery several times. This is revealed through the narrator, “In all his life, Jem had never declined a dare” implying that no matter how risky or scary the dare, he would follow through (16). The first page of the book mentions Jem right off the bat, making him a main aspect of “To Kill a Mockingbird”. The narrator (Scout) states ”When he was nearly thirteen my brother Jem got his arm badly broken at the elbow.” Jem has been brought to the story in the first line of the book.This will eventually come full circle at the end when Jem gets his arm broken again by Bob Ewell. This is a significant showing how he is the main focus of the story.
Jem’s perception of bravery has changed throughout the course of the book. His maturity is a result of Atticus’s actions around him. At the beginning of the book, Jem is dared by his neighbour Dill to touch the door of the Radley’s; the Radley house symbolizes fear in the minds of the children. Jem does so thinking the act is courageous while Scout remarks, “In all his life, Jem had never declined a dare.” This shows that like most children, Jem is often more idealistic than realistic. His reactions are instinctive and often unplanned and reckless.
At such a young age, Scout still has a sort of innocence that any reader will find entertaining and emotional at times. There are many scenarios when Scout seems like just a little girl that we can’t help loving. One instance is when a mob of men gathers at the jailhouse where Atticus is guarding Tom Robinson. Scout and Jem sneak out of the house and they run up to Atticus while the men are still talking to him. Sometime during the whole confrontation, Scout recognizes one of the men and makes a personal connection with him. “ ‘Hey, Mr. Cunningham. How’s your entailment gettin’ along?’... He seemed uncomfortable; he cleared his throat and looked away. My friendly overture had fallen flat… ‘Don’t you remember me, Mr. Cunningham? I’m Jean Louise Finch. You brought us some hickory nuts one time, remember?’... Atticus had said it was the polite thing to talk to people about what they were interested in, not about… ,when I slowly awoke to the fact that I was addressing the entire aggregation.
