Holden Caulfield was a confusing, depressing, and interesting seventeen year old that many people admire from the ‘Catcher in the Rye’ but others view Holden as an immature boy that needs guidance. Throughout the novel Holden starts to evolve and his character is shown in each situation he is in when he is describing his life to his physiologist. The use of ‘Phony’ in Catcher in the Rye by J.D Salinger, shows that Holden has a strong dislike for the people around his and still stuck in his adolescent behavior through all that Holden has experienced in his seventeen years of life and how much of a liar Holden is in every situation. According to literary terms, Holden would be describes as a protagonist. A protagonist character is ‘the leading character, hero, or heroine of a drama or other literary works. Holden may not be the true definition of a protagonist but he is noble. While Holden was out exploring New York after he was kicked out of Pencey Prep he came across nuns at the diner in Grand Central Station. Holden gave the nuns a contribution of ten dollars when he noticed what they were eating and what their bags looked like (109). Holden wanted to do something nice, what a protagonist would do. Another way Holden can be viewed as a protagonist is when Holden says what he wants to be when he gets older. Holden wants to be a ‘catcher in the rye’ which means that when little kids are playing in a field of rye off a big cliff, Holden would catch them before they fell off (173). This has people viewing Holden as a hero, saving little kids before they fall off a cliff (Protagonist) (Salinger) (Shmoop). On the other hand Holden is also viewed as a static character as well. A static character is ‘a literary or dramatic character w... ... middle of paper ... ...lfield has a meaning the prefix ‘caul’ means a membrane that covers the head of a fetus during birth. Caul in his name symbolizes the blindness of childhood or the inability of a child to see the complexity of the adult world. That is why Holden has this obsession to save the young from growing up, for example when Holden goes to his little sister Phoebes’ school to give her a note and he notices that ‘fuck you’ was written on the wall. Holden wanted to kill the person who wrote that because of how his sister Phoebe and friends would see it and wonder what it meant, and then to have a perverty bum would tell them what it mean (202). That all ties in with Holden wanting to be a ‘catcher in the rye’ (Salinger) (Shmoop) (Yardley). J.D Salinger wrote the famous ‘Catcher in the Rye’ that has many people wondering and analyzing what Holdens’ characteristics really are.
