The Heart of Darkness meets Things Fall Apart Heart of Darkness by Joseph Conrad is about a man named Marlow who was a sailor that travelled to Africa as an agent for The Company. During his experience with the company he realized what his job was, which was to colonize the people of Africa. During his experience he saw the interaction between the whites and the African people, he finally learns the truth about the company. Along the way he meets a mysterious man called Kurtz, he idolized him and was on his side rather than the company’s. Throughout his journey the way he viewed African people was like he had never met another species of humans that looked different. In the book Things Fall Apart Okonkwo received his neighbor Okoye into his home; they had their usual greeting of shaking hands and placing goat skin to sit on the ground. Soon after Okonkwo arrives and tells him “I have Kola” (94), Okoye replies and says “He who brings Kola brings life”(94). This displays the importance of Kola in the culture of the Africans in this book. Okoye’s reply towards the Kola shows how much it is valued. Yams are a very valuable possession to have in Umofia, so the villagers took the planting it very seriously. During the planting season Unoka says he “Before I put any crop n the earth, I sacrifice a cock to Ani, the owner of all the land. I also kill a cock to Ifejoku the god of yams” (34). It is a custom for to make sacrifices to gods before planting anything. Achebe uses Unoka’s respect to the gods’ demands to show how much respect they Africans have and how important their customs are. The African people in this book are very superstitious when it comes to death, they take it very serious because it is not done properly there can be bad consequences. In the book Ogbuefi Ezeudu says “They have that Custom in Obodoani. If a man dies at this time he is not buried but cast into the evil forest…. In reference to Ezeodu’s death there were certain rules that had to be followed because he was a warrior, “From morning till night warriors came and went in age groups. They all wore raffia skirts and their bodies were painted with chalk and charcoal” (52). The men had to look a certain type of way and come in a specific type of order for the funeral. As the ceremony continues “An ancestral spirit or egwuegwu appeared from the underworld, speaking in a tremulous, unearthly voice and completely covered in raffia” (52). This shows how Achebe displayed how the vast value that are put on people of high standard. In the book there was an elaborate marriage ceremony that took place; in the wedding certain marriage rights had to be performed. During the marriage ceremony the bride was told to “Remember that you do not answer truthfully you will suffer or even die at childbirth, she began. How many men have lain with you since my brother first expressed the desire to marry you?” (110). This shows how Achebe exhibits the rule of being totally honest when asked a question, he conveyed it in a honorable way because even though such questions is not appropriate to ask he did not disrespect the
