Everything in life that we experience effects who we are as a person today. Even if we do not remember all the events that shaped a particular part of our life, we have memories of the events that we believe had the biggest impact. The types or experiences we have both positive and negative help shape us into the types of readers and writers we become. I do not consider myself a writer, it is something that I neither enjoy doing nor am I a good writer. I believe a lot of my poor writing skill has to do with the fact that I only began to enjoy reading about four to five years ago. According to Stephen King in On Writing, in order to be a good writer you must read a lot and write a lot; and I am only just starting to read for pleasure. We …show more content…
Many summer reading books are just uninteresting; so for me reading then became a chore that I was being forced to do. I already had a negative experience with being embarrassed while reading, so then to get one boring book after the other just solidified that reading was not enjoyable. Other than bad summer reading books I was just a very active child, I enjoyed running around and playing sports. I did not have the patience as a child to read, I always wanted to be on the go. In high school for English class I did read a few books that actually held my interest but not enough to make me go out to Barnes and Noble and start buying books; however, it did make me realize that maybe I just needed to find stories and subject matters that I found interesting. The only problem with that was I did not know exactly which types of books I would like and I did not even know where to begin …show more content…
That is why I am not surprised that I would also enjoy the book series she was reading at the time. We were at my aunt’s beach house for a little over week and she would not put down or stop talking about this book. I knew my older cousin enjoyed reading here and there but I never saw her so into the story before. She was reading the true blood series, which is about vampires, I know very typical that a vampire series is what got me hooked on enjoying reading. My cousin kept hounding me to just read it since she had the first book of the series with her anyway, she stated I might as well just give it a try and it would give me something else to do at the beach. Towards the end of the week I gave in; however, I made a deal with her that I would at least read half the book and if I did not like it she had to stop talking about it. As much as I wanted to hate the book and prove her wrong I could not put that book
My parents have always stressed the importance of reading. Throughout my whole life, they have motivated me to read and they have encouraged me to find books that I find interesting to read. Because of their encouragement, I am an avid reader today. When I was a child, just starting to enjoy reading I liked to read books that were fiction. Some of my favorite books to read as a child are series that I still love today and I think I still have every book in each series stored in my attic. They are The Boxcar Children, Junie B. Jones, and The Magic Tree House.
My mom is In the military so when I was a child she was never really around. I was raised as a daddy's girl. Which in return meant that I was a tomboy, and I mean full blown, only wearing basketball shorts and baggy stained t-shirts every day. My life revolved around basketball and my dad, that was it. Reading was not a part of my life, I thought It was incredibly boring
When I was younger, teachers handed out books for students to take home and read. Some of these books were not short stories, but instead, thick novels that were several hundred pages or longer. My expectations were that it was going to be a long, boring, and torturous few months trying to digest the material. Overall, I would have to say that I was right, but there were a few stories that surprised me. As an adult, my tastes and interests have changed, and I think that the struggles of the characters in some of the books I read in the past can be equated with the struggles I endured as well.
Summer readings from freshmen, sophomore, and junior year, and also the books we had to read during those years. Romeo and Juliet was a major book we read my freshmen year as well as Thirteen Reasons Why, and we read a few good books my sophomore year. We read The Great Gatsby, The Fault in our Stars, and Fahrenheit 451. There were reasons why we read those books, we did not just read them for fun. There is a little bit of a history lesson behind this too, and that is how literature was different in 1984 (pun intended) than it is now. Reading these books also helped with my interest in books by giving me different genera ideas that I might enjoy, but it also played a negative role because some of the parts of reading these books were boring to do. I think that both The Great Gatsby and The Fault in our Stars were good books for me and put a positive effect on my reading habits. I also liked reading these books because we usually watched a movie to go with the book, so I would read the book and try to picture everything in my mind as best as I could and then see how close my imagination can get to the movie. For example, in The Great Gatsby I tried to imagine the green light that Gatsby stares at and Gatsby’s ginormous house, or what the “Eyes of T.J. Eckleburg” look like staring down at the valley of ashes. Another example in The Fault in our Stars when Hazel and
My relationship with writing has been much like roller coaster. Some experiences I had no control over. Other experiences were more influential. Ultimately it wasn’t until I started reading not because I had to read but because I wanted to, that's when my relationship reached change. I would have probably never cared about writing as I do today if it weren't for the critics in my family. When I was a child, my aunts and uncles always been in competition with who's child is better in school. I have always hated reading and writing because of the pressure to prove my family wrong was overwhelming for me. I had to prove them wrong and show them that I was capable of being "smart" which according to them was getting straight A's in all your classes.
My reading experience in junior-high and first three years of high school were not so much different. I had never been enthusiastic to read about predetermined topics assigned by my teacher and they continued to assign predetermined reading topics that made me feel frustrated and at times uncomfortable. But there was positivity that came out of these repulsive and devastating books, such as Lord of The Flies by William Golding or The Night by Elie Wiesel. Lord of the Flies caused me to confirm that humans must have rules and a government to help
Life events can have a major effect on a person’s life. This can affect on who a person may or may not become in the future. The importance of life from all the short stories that have been read all shape into the person that someone can become. Major life events that someone has went through in the past can shape into who a person will become in the future. Good past events can lead to a nice and happy person. Bad past events can lead to a mean and upset person.
All throughout my younger preschool and kindergarten years i didn’t read. I didn’t really like reading at the time. This is because i never found books that interested me or that i liked, there were only a few ever. It also didn’t help that i was far sighted and needed glasses to read. They said i would have them for the rest of my life. Now that i could see and read better i was better at it but still didn’t like it. There was nothing that caught my attention or sounded interesting. For a while i got into books about jets and planes in the military or any vehicle really. I read those for a while but i still didn’t feel that these were the books for me.
My earliest memory of being introduced to literacy is the time before elementary school, when my grandparents were reading me bedtime stories and books like Pinocchio and The Three Little Pigs. After that, I started going to school so reading and writing became part of my everyday life, and they still are. I cannot say that I am a big fan of writing and reading, like some people are. I only write when I have to, and my writing is always connected to school, however, I do not feel the same way about reading. In my free time, I like to read. I choose books which are easy going to read, books which are based on a movie or books that my friends told me to read. Also, because I am an athlete, I have to read some sports motivational
I was reading at a level I was not mature enough for yet. Many of the books in the school library did not pique my interest anymore. One reason for this was the Harry Potter series. As long as I could remember, the people around me had praised these books. My mother is very religious and did not like me watching or reading anything with witchcraft.
Writing has played a big role in my life from a young age I took a love to books. I think that the books in my life were a big role because of how influenced I was by someone else’s writing. Overall id say I'm a good writer, sometimes I know I need to work on the mechanics and the paper itself can be a bit stronger. I enjoy creative writing because it allows you to tell a story. Its making a piece of art wit words and i thrive off of creativity, I’m also good at texting and social media.
Reading always became tiresome to me. We had a reading block in class everyday. The reading block was to make us read fifteen minutes straight a day. Ms. Peshca, my seventh grade teacher, ensured that the class would read. I never read the books until we started reading The Hunger Games.
Do you think your past experiences have shaped the way you think and live your life? Well, in an excerpt from The Autobiography of Malcolm X he states, “All of our experiences fuse into our personality. Everything that ever happened to us is an ingredient.”Malcolm X is correct because every experience you have can impact you in a positive or negative way. My mom’s dedication to succeed in life, and my failures have shaped me into the person that I am today.
Maybe, my sister and I inherited this live of reading from my father, or perhaps, our environment influenced us, but we were hooked onto books from a very early age. We would even take them to social gatherings, where we sure that we would get bored, and then just disappear into a quiet corner and spend the evening reading.
When I was younger, I would never put a book down, but now as I started maturing it has been difficult to pick up books in general. I do not know why I stopped reading perhaps it was because I had responsibilities, getting distracted with the new technology or simply because I got tired of it since the school would make you read books. Reading books for me was something I would do on my own time and I considered a fun thing to do, but once it was mandatory I put them down right away. When they started being mandatory you couldn’t read the books that you are interested in and had to read the books that you had a quiz on the next day. In general I do regret that I stopped reading because perhaps my reading skills could have been better than what they are now.
