Our experiences, history and lifestyle have affected each of our individual’s perspective. Shaping our belief systems, we have created an aspect of society now and towards the future. Each of us has been raised differently, especially in this revolutionizing country. We have been affected by our past and current interaction with life on a daily basis. Growing up in a fluctuating and liberal household, has guided my beliefs today. Being motivated by my home, generation of social media, parents education and careers as well as my family’s diversity has influenced my values and attitudes with certain philosophies formed by own encounters.
Born and raised in New York for the first few years of my life, my understandings of values and beliefs were

The ethnic diversity from seeing, African American to Muslims or Native Americans was more common than hearing about people moving. People in New York all seem to have a connection through knowing the cultures, sights and encounters. New Yorkers become a family, larger than just me and my parents. My family had become a generation of college graduates. My parents could only afford going to a community college and became very fortunate about being able to go to college, both graduating with a masters. Because my family’s relation to attending a college, it has always been expected of me to go to a university right after high school. Since both my parents education was taken at community colleges they also seem to head in the same area of career: law enforcement. This wasn’t a surprised to the family on my dad’s side since most of his brothers, my uncles, became a police officer or correctional officer. My grandparents from both sides of my family were into government work as they lived in Puerto Rico. I became very aware of both my parents being in the law enforcement at a young age. My father served a tremendous amount of dedication to the NYPD helping out in Times square during the New Year’s holiday and when one of the worst events occurred, 9/11 he aided and
People from different race and regions made this city a unique place. Howard wrote, “over the centuries, generations of New Yorkers descendants of people from every part of the world-have built an amazingly diverse state, a place of picturesque towns and villages as well as bustling cities, of farmland, industry, commerce and astounding engineering achievements” (6). New York City is an increasingly diverse and dynamic city with all immigrants making up the majority of the residence in some neighborhoods. The more than doubling of the city’s immigrant population since 1970 has given rise to this dense ethnic neighborhood. Variety of languages from all across the world is spoken throughout the five boroughs. There are numerous cultural organizations in the five boroughs each with integral to the diversity that defines New York City. Queens is in fact the most ethnically and racially diverse borough in New York. I live in queens and I have neighbors whom are originally from Spain, China, Russia, and India. From them I learned a lot of information about their country, many recipes and little bit of their language too. Hanging out with my neighbors is not only fun but also a learning process for me. Every community has their own national and religious festivals. In our festivals we invite each other and thus our festivals become more enjoyable. Throughout the five boroughs the city is
The United States as a whole is seen as the land of opportunity. New York is a major central for diversity and because of that many people from different cultural atmospheres have brought their families and dreams to New York City. Although Immigration patters throughout the last 200 years have varied, New York has consistently seen people from around the world move to the city and call it home. From the earliest points in our history as a nation, New York has been a center for trade and economic growth. New York is known world wide as a cultural melting pot. While other states have had immigration surges, none have compared to the diversity and sheer number of immigrants that have made their way to the City. This paper will focus on the Immigration patterns and the diverse, yet culturally similar communities within New York.
While the great migration continue, African Americans began to establish a new home, a new place for themselves, confronting economic, political and social challenges, while all this, they were creating a black urban culture, regaining influences that will last for decades to come. New York and other cities began to notice and witness how their black population expanded, however, with this, you began to witness racism and prejudice, showing that they were ready to move on with their
Since the beginning of time, people have been trying to become individuals and stand out as unique beings. During the foundation of the colonies, individuals were focused on preserving their religious beliefs. As slavery became more predominant, the Civil War era fought to give black people their identity back. In the 1800s and 1900s, the individual initiative shifted from giving a group of people identity to individuals fighting for their own personal beliefs. In today’s society, individualism has been diminished by the collapse of the economy, forcing people to live with their parents for longer periods of time. As the economy continues to grow again individualism is making strides in a positive direction.
I face different perspectives each day since beginning school this semester. I made the decision to return to college after 26 years of justifying why I should not return from only one perspective, my own. Engaging in dual perception keeps me from loading up my backpack and heading home to my comfort zone. I have conversations with people who differ in age, demographic, culture, lifestyle, to name a few. These differences design perspectives as unique as fingerprints. Communication between two people always includes these unique perspectives, having been influenced by distinct values integrated in each person (Wood, 2014). My personal values of loyalty, authenticity, and self-respect have important roles when I choose to view a situation from a different perspective. Their respective roles are to keep me faithful to my beliefs, base decisions on facts, and to honor myself while respecting others. Exploring the origin of my values helps to organize and assign their importance throughout life stages. Personal values create a
In today's world, society creates an impact on human life. More of an impact can be seen among family and peers. They can be found at home, work, and school. At home with family, identity can be created on the difference of having one parent, divorced or separated parents, no parents, abusive parents, or even negligent parents. For example, children who grow up without a father or mother figure tend to become more independent at an early stage. Another example is where certain experiences within the family such as constantly witnessing parents argue can cause one's identity to be confined and distant. But, some people shape their identity similar to their parents. Such as a son became a soldier in the army because his father was in the army. Siblings, if any, are also an influence on the social identity of a person. They either become your friend, mentor, or you...
To conclude, faith in my parents, diversity in communities, and trust in friends are all things we need to have a strong presence in our lives . These values or beliefs have been important to me because I have overcome some obstacles dealing with racism, divorced parents, and not having good friendships. In the future it, will be important to learn from other people's mistakes. Having different belief or values define who you are as a individual and it is up you to handle your belief or
Values in my opinion should determine your priorities, and they’re probably the measures, you use to tell if your life is turning out the way you want it to. Knowing your own values can help you make decisions about how to live your life. The values that I believe in play a very important role in my life. These important values have been greatly influenced by my family and life experiences. My core values include family, health, knowledge, happiness, friendship, loyalty, trust, hard work, honesty, and learning.
My core educational values define what I believe is necessary tools students need to be successful. Such values are provided by the community of people (educators, parents, business partners) who touch the students’ lives. I value knowledge because without awareness of specific content, students are not able to truly feel a part of society. I value development of skills in order for students to apply their knowledge. When skills are applied, students demonstrate their knowledge and ability to function in our current world. I value critical thinking in our students so they can extend their knowledge and skills to solve complex problems benefitting our present and future. I value citizenship and feel that education has a responsibility to model and nurture character qualities in our students. Educating students is raising them equipped with tools that will enable them to function as contributing participants in a productive society. Knowledge, skills, critical thinking, and citizenship are educational values at the core of developing a student ready for the world’s challenges.
There are so many things that are important to me, but only a few that could greatly affect my life if I didn’t have or accomplish them. The biggest things to me are success, family, and freedom. These are all things that are essential to my life in so many different aspects.
Understanding who we are as individuals can be a struggle for people throughout life. It can be difficult to comprehend who we are and why we exist. There are daily outside influences that help create who we are and what our values are. Values play a significant role in our lives. They shape the choices we make and reveal a big part of our identity to the world. Some values may be more important than others, but they still manage to influence our lives in one way or another, whether we know it or not. Values can range from a tangible item to an idea that has influenced us to stand by and remember those values. The values we hold with the highest importance act as a guide and help us prioritize our purpose and goals in our daily life. My family has taught me a list of values and traits that have helped me become a well-rounded individual. I value my family more than anything because most of my core inner values have started from their teachings at one point or another. My top values that I have developed from my family are dedication, honesty, and wisdom. I will discuss who I am in terms of the important values that shape my personal belief system and decision making framework that, in essence, describes the direction of my life.
The main goal in life is to live by our beliefs and our values. These beliefs and values define who we are as a person and create how we behave towards others (Wright, 1). These beliefs and values can be defined as our personal core values. My personal core values include family, trust, honesty, friendship, and creativity, which define who I am, change from past to present, and could change again.
My values were all influenced by my parents. The only one that I had to
My personal vision of the future is not something I have taken a significant amount of time to ponder in the past. I have general ideas of where I see myself both personally and professionally in future but have not identified specific steps to get there or pondered why I want to be in that situation. When taking on this somewhat daunting task of identifying my future self it is important to identify my driving values, philosophy, dreams, and my personal calling. Self-reflection on these characteristics and preferences are key to a developing a successful picture of the future.
As humans, we all have the desire to want to be better, smarter and more awesome person than we already are. We either want to be more attractive, have a faster car, make more money or b more popular. Even so, when someone asks me what kind of person I aspire to be, nothing physical comes to mind. The way that I now feel as if I have a huge computer loading bar above me. The person that I thrive to be is a combination of my set values and principles and my desire to improve upon in my life.
