How to Golf Golf is considered a gentleman’s game; it requires a certain amount of social acceptableness: such as wearing the correct attire, or being silent when necessary. To play the game of golf, one must have the correct equipment, and the knowledge to use said equipment; to reach the yardage that is required of differing tee boxes. Also, as with any game, one must know the rules in order to play the game. This essay will cover the essentials of playing golf, so that one may know how to properly play the sport. For a male golfer, he must wear a collared shirt that is tucked in to his slacks (or shorts). He must refrain from wearing cargo shorts or jeans, as this is not socially acceptable for a golf course. For traction on the grass of the course, he must be fitted with the proper golf shoes. The bottom of a golf shoe is cleated to grip the turf, much like a football player uses his cleats to stay upright on the field. A golfer must have traction to stay upright during a swing. For a female golfer, the proper attire should be a choice of the following tops and bottoms: a sleeved or sleeveless collared blouse, polo-style shirts, turtle-neck tops, slacks, skorts (a combination of a skirt and shorts), and golf dresses. As a male golfer wears golf shoes, so should a female golfer. Much like a male golfer, a female golfer should refrain from wearing certain items of clothing such as: T-shirts, tank tops, jeans, and sun dresses. Dressing well is important, as is being courteous to others golfers. When a fellow golfer is teeing up, one should refrain from speaking or otherwise making noise that may be distracting. Once everyone has teed off, the golfer furthest from the hole is to hit first. Charles “Chick” Evans, who once was a caddy and worldly renowned golfer, appreciates the fine young adults that have endured the morning wakeup call everyday in the summer. To whom that are applicable can ultimately be awarded the Chick Evans Caddie Scholarship. Named after Chick Evans himself because he dropped out of college in 1912 for lack of money, the scholarship is funded by donations from golfers and the proceeds of an annual professional tournament (Spears, 1995). Although Chick Evans has passed away many years ago, his legacy still lives on through the 825 scholars currently enrolled in 19 universities all across the United States. An honorable win is one that many people strive for in a competition. To act in a way that could be considered unethical could cause a win to be considered tarnished. Mill is seen to believe the idea that quality should be more important than quantity. This idea is viewed and supported by many in different competitive settings. The way a player plays a sport can often define the person themselves. A person can be viewed in ways such as humble, competitive, or a liar that can view them in good bad or a neutral view. Honor is a word closely associated with the sport of golf. This is a sport unlike many others where for the most part only you and your opponent can truly call the shots and be the referees. Ever since I was a little kid, golf has been there. Golf has been something in my life that I can always fall back on and use to get some anger out of just to clear my head. No matter what it was, golf has been my rock. There is nothing like waking up at the crack of dawn to get out under the sun to play a game you love.
The agency I chose to do is the Hillandale golf course, which is located in Durham North Carolina. The reason why I chose to do my project on Hillandale golf course because since the beginning of the semester I have been traveling over to the golf course twice a week for a class learning the rules and the way the game of golf is played. Hillandale golf course is named the “Granddaddy golf course of Durham/ Research Triangle golf”. Hillandale was donated to the Durham area back in 1911 through the philanthropic interests of long-time Durham resident John Sprunt Hill. Donald Ross and Perry Maxwell originally designed the course. Donald Ross had designed the first 9 holes and Perry Maxwell came up with the last 9 holes. Since 1960 over 1.7 million rounds of golf have been played that being an average of 45,000 yearly. This public golf course provides a challenge from each level of players in the game of golf. In 1960, the Hillandale Golf Course was moved to its current location in Durham and was redesigned by George Cobb, who is also the designer of the Surf Club in Myrtle Beach, S.C.

The sport of golf has been dated all the way back to years before 1,000 and has kept growing exponentially ever since. According to the International Golf Federation, they have 144 different countries a part of the organization, leaving out 51. Hearing the loud “thump” as the ball hits the racket is extremely satisfying, especially if your life now revolves around this fast-paced and exhilarating sport. Tennis is an outdoor game played by two individuals or pairs of players on a clay or grass court that’s divided by a low net. Each game is played with tennis rackets and small, yellow elastic balls. Tennis was first introduced in Wales and the United Kingdom in 1873 by “Major Walter Wingfield” (tennistheme.com). While most sports are easy to pick up, tennis takes extreme dedication to learn how to play the game, to perfect the amount of technique it takes, as well as its great impact on one’s personal life.

Although most people who play the sport of golf play because of its interaction with nature, what most golfers do not realize or consider is the damaging environmental impact on the sport. The booming golf trade throughout the world creates a haven for golfers and a nightmare for environmentalists. According to members of the Malaysia-Based Asia-Pacific People’s Environment Network, golf development is becoming one of the most unsustainable and damaging activities to people and the environment (TED Case Studies, 1997).
The topic I am going to being doing for my project at my placement at Camperdown nursery is the benefits of outdoor play. There are seven benefits of outdoor play for children, they are learning, creativity, health, social skills, wellbeing and independence. Outdoor play encourages children to go outside and get fresh air and burn off some energy, it can improve their physical development. This relates to my placement as the children get the opportunity to go outside and run about as much as possible on a daily basis.
The difference in the two sports that the athletes played (basketball and golf) is quite a big one. In basketball, the object of the game is if you are on offense you want to put the ball into the round hoop while you are being guarded by opposing players and you have a boundary you have to stay in. If you are on defense, you want to prevent the offense from scoring into the hoop and if a shot is made, you throw the ball from out of bounds and then you are on offense.
