How to Golf Golf is considered a gentleman’s game; it requires a certain amount of social acceptableness: such as wearing the correct attire, or being silent when necessary. To play the game of golf, one must have the correct equipment, and the knowledge to use said equipment; to reach the yardage that is required of differing tee boxes. Also, as with any game, one must know the rules in order to play the game. This essay will cover the essentials of playing golf, so that one may know how to properly play the sport. Firstly, one must be familiar with the rules of the game. For a male golfer, he must wear a collared shirt that is tucked in to his slacks (or shorts). He must refrain from wearing cargo shorts or jeans, as this is not socially acceptable for a golf course. For traction on the grass of the course, he must be fitted with the proper golf shoes. The bottom of a golf shoe is cleated to grip the turf, much like a football player uses his cleats to stay upright on the field. A golfer must have traction to stay upright during a swing. For a female golfer, the proper attire should be a choice of the following tops and bottoms: a sleeved or sleeveless collared blouse, polo-style shirts, turtle-neck tops, slacks, skorts (a combination of a skirt and shorts), and golf dresses. As a male golfer wears golf shoes, so should a female golfer. Much like a male golfer, a female golfer should refrain from wearing certain items of clothing such as: T-shirts, tank tops, jeans, and sun dresses. Dressing well is important, as is being courteous to others golfers. When a fellow golfer is teeing up, one should refrain from speaking or otherwise making noise that may be distracting. Once everyone has teed off, the golfer furthest from the hole is to hit first. If one’s ball lands in a sand trap (or bunker), one is to play the ball from there, then rake the sand in the bunker afterwards.
