Four generations of computers have evolved from the 1950’s. Each generation reflected a change to hardware of decreased size but increased capabilities to control computer operations. The first commercial computer was developed by John Eckert and John W. Mauchly in 1951 and was known as Univac 1. For the next 25 years, mainframe computers were used to do calculations in large corporations. Supercomputers were used in Science and Engineering, for designing aircraft and nuclear reactors, and for predicting worldwide weather patterns. Minicomputers came on the scene in the early 1980’s in small businesses, manufacturing plants and factories. Computers today are divided into four categories by size, cost and processing ability. They are supercomputers, mainframe, minicomputer and microcomputer more commonly known as a Personal Computer. Personal computers can be further divided into desktop, network, laptop and handheld. By the 1970’s with the development of the Internet by the US Department of Defence, the Information Age was
The subject of this term paper will be about computers in the 1950’s. The divisions that will be covered are; the types of computers there were, the memory capacity of computers, the programming languages of that time, and the uses of the computers for that time. Information will be gathered from the Internet, from books, and from magazines, and from the encyclopedia.

"Technology is like fish. The longer it stays on the shelf, the less desirable it becomes." (1) Since the dawn of computers, there has always been a want for a faster, better technology. These needs can be provided for quickly, but become obsolete even quicker. In 1981, the first "true portable computer", the Osborne 1 was introduced by the Osborne Computer Corporation. (2) This computer revolutionized the way that computers were used and introduced a brand new working opportunity.
Since the ENIAC, the first mainframe, hummed to life in 1946, the chasm between humankind and machine has appeared to dwindle. Computers have insinuated themselves into the lives of millions of people, taking over the performance of mundane and repetitive tasks.
"The most transforming technological event since the capture of fire." This is the way one expert describes the revolution introduced in this century by computers. Such extravagant interpretations aside, there is no doubt that the acceleration of computer technology has produced enormous changes in all our lives. As late as the 1950s, computers were rarely seen outside university centers. Now, of course, they are everywhere, in classrooms, libraries, offices, stores, factories, research labs, and, increasingly, in our homes.
According to the U.S. Census "Forty-four million households, or 42 percent, had at least one member who used the Internet at home in 2000" (Home Computers 2). Today, no doubt, even more family members in the United States use computers. Most people are aware of the desktop computers which can be found in the home and in the workplace. What are the different types of computers and what are their purposes? Computers can be classified into three different categories of home computers, portable computers, and business computers including workstations and super computers.
The World Turning Digital: computer is seen in virtually all aspects of our lives. From the mobile phones we use, the Television we watch etc. Makes it pretty interesting to found out how this work.
Computer history goes back to the 1800s when Charles Babbage created the first computer, named the Babbage model. It was an analytical model that was composed of gears and levers and was about the size of a desk calculator ("Computers" Ferguson's Career Guidance Center). Computers that used vacuum tubes to store space concepts were considered first generation computers. Overtime, computers became smaller, faster, more reliable, and much easier to use than the previous models. In 1971, the first microprocessor was invented, which led to the fourth generation computers, which are used to this day. By the 1980s, competition among companies, such as IBM, Apple, and Packard Bell, resulted in lower prices for computers ("Computers"). Now, computers are affordable for businesses, schools, and homes.
If nineteenth century was an era of the Industrial revolution in Europe, I would say that computer and Information Technology have domineered since the twentieth century. The world today is a void without computers, be it healthcare, commerce or any other field, the industry won’t thrive without Information Technology and Computer Science. This ever-growing field of technology has aroused interest in me since my childhood.
The concept of ICT is vaster than this. Although it is believed that radio and television play a less important role in education nowadays, some teachers and educators still consider them as an effective means of teaching. However, ICT is a totally new phenomenon; at the very beginning.
