The most recognizable characteristic that contributes to the effectiveness in Wallace 's speech is his style. The first component of his style begins right at the start of the speech when he tells the story of the fish. This is a parable and he uses these as a technique to engage the audience. Each of these parables have a different message behind them, but each meaning contributes to Wallace 's main purpose of this speech. For example, the story of the atheist and the religious man demonstrates blind-certainty and close-mindedness. Wallace tells this story to introduce the idea of thinking critically about others ' views, but more importantly to have the audience question their own beliefs. The use of these stories is a clever strategy because
“Few traces remain of Scottish hero William Wallace, the medieval knight who fought against English oppression.” (Cohen) The most known facts come from legends surrounding the infamous William Wallace and his short, tragic career saving Scotland. Now a martyr, Sir William Wallace is inspiration to many Scottish families that anything can be done. A compilation of many widely accepted legends is told in Mel Gibson’s BraveHeart.
What Stone points out that is very interesting and relevant to western culture is that the Indo-Europeans were always in continual conflict with not only the people of the lands that they invaded but between themselves as well. In Braveheart, the Irish and English were in conflict with each other and the English took over Ireland, both the Irish and English live in filth, in cottages where they raise their family, the men provide for their family and the woman are married off so they can find a man to provide for them, they are barbaric the way they live and the way they are perceived, this film also shows the patriarchal society and the misogyny ways of the Europeans and how they treat their women the king even made a law allowing their men to take and rape the Irish women even if they were married, the women had no say the kings son who was next in line to be on throne was gay and had to marry a woman to reproduce but the woman had no say and was not respected or shown in a powerful light. The main character William Wallace made his childhood love at night because he feared would tried to take her if they found out about the marriage and even still one of the English
Analysis of Stevenson's Persuasive Communication
In "Persuasive Communication," Stevenson examines how the "global communication system offers increasing opportunities for governments, private corporations, and occasionally individuals to reach and influence people around the world" (364). He takes a look at two particular aspects of this process: government engagement in "public diplomacy" or propaganda directed at the citizens of other countries and advertising. I will focus my critique on his analysis of the earlier one.
Everyone has multiple personalities that can be brought up in certain situations. When people get stressed out they tend to be more rushed or irritated. In the novel Lord of the Flies by William Golding a group of boys are stuck on an island and have to help each other to survive. Golding shows how when our main priority is physical survival, we start to lose our hope and sanity.
Aristotle, a Greek philosopher, who initially came up with the three different sections of rhetorical appeals and the act of persuasion. The three appeals include ethos, logos and pathos, all three different means of persuasion. Michael Moore’s, Capitalism: A Love Story will be used and examples will be taken from throughout the movie to analyze his rhetorical techniques when reaching out to the audience. Examples from “The Qualities of the Prince” by Niccoló Machiavelli will also be analyzed for the three appeals. Moore’s movie relates exactly to the rhetorical appeals because he is persuading the readers to realize all the corrupt and unjust happenings that are going on all around us without even knowing it. He is trying to explain to the readers that it is going on everywhere and steps to educate their selves to gain awareness in the corruption of America. His video shows many examples of the “behind the scenes” into the political world and cites all the events back to how and why it is ruining our country and what we can do to prevent and/or help the cause. Machiavelli’s piece also was a form of persuasion and rhetoric’s, using all three appeals as well. “The Qualities of the Prince” is a piece by Machiavelli in which he is trying to explain how a prince should act and what traits they should possess to be a successful leader. Machiavelli is using the rhetoric appeals and explaining his experiences through which he has learned what it takes to be a great prince.
Blind Harry, although not a contemporary source, relied on sources that modern historians do not have access to. The Wallace was a product of growing nationalist consciousness in the 15th century , which is revealed in the anti-English and pro-Wallace approach that Blind Harry assumes. It would be inappropriate to dismiss the work of Blind Harry because of his dramatic and inaccurate portrayal. His account does contain vital information to the recreation of the character and career of Wallace.
In literature, the word “hyperbole” is used to describe an extreme exaggeration. The tactic of using such excessive exaggerations for entertainment purposes is one often exercised by the “fame and fortune” hungry movie makers of Hollywood. Sometimes, historical accounts may need just a little (or a lot) more flare to bring them success on the big screen. Whether it come in the form of an especially evil villain or a strong female lead whose behavior would be considered inappropriate in the depicted time period, historical inaccuracies often replace fact to help roll in the big bucks. However, this does not justify using a movie as one’s main source of knowledge surrounding certain historical events. For example, watching the movie The Patriot
Research Question
Fear appeals are used constantly in advertising and other forms of persuasion. The results from the use of fear vary from case to case, causing a constant debate on how and if fear is actually effective. However, if a disgust factor is included in the fear appeal, does that increase the ability of the fear appeal to be able to persuade the target audience?
Literature Review
Although working on this new style of writing was quite fascinating, it was the most difficult challenging essay I've ever written. Before even I started the essay, I had spent so much time trying to fully grasp Wallace's writing styles. Furthermore, it was difficult for me to choose a subject to dig deeply and debate about because I had to imitate Wallace's writing style and he wouldn't choose a subject that I would normally choose. While I was researching his biography to get a better idea of him, I found something interesting fact in his life; he committed suicide by hanging himself in 2008 because of bipolar disorder. Due to the fact that the last book I read was "the old man and the sea," written by Ernest Hemmingway and he also committed
