Dante’s Dark Wood of Error represents not only the immorality of the world through which each of us must venture, but also the vulnerability we exhibit to the temptation of this world. I have chosen 3 characters who play an important role in the Dark Wood of Error the first one being Dante the stories main character. The second is Virgil another main character who helps guide dante through the inferno. Finally, the greyhound not so much of a main character more like a neutral and rarely spoken about character.

Dante: He explores the nature of sin by traveling through the rings of hell, where evil receives punishment according to god's justice. Dante’s situation is meant to represent that of the entire human race. Dante finds himself wandering …show more content…

Virgil offers to serve as dante's guide, he warns him
O’Mara (Page 2) before they can climb the hill they must first pass through the place of eternal punishment, hell
(Canto 1). Virgil is the voice of guidance,knowledgeability and reason. He’s there to project his reason and to create knowledgeable people. Dante praises both Virgil and Beatrice for their aid and then continues to follow virgil toward hell (Canto 2). Virgil shows dante not only the physical route through the Dark Wood of Error but also reinforces its moral lessons.

The Greyhound: The hound which will chase all the dreadful monsters back to hell where they were created. The Greyhound is meant to pursue the She-Wolf until the monster has gone back to where it originated (Canto 1). The Greyhound is known as the savior who will destroy the foul beast of hell. The hound represents bravery, strength and courage which souls damned to hell lack. The Greyhound is the first of several engematic prophecies that is a savior figure who will come to redirect the world to the path of truth and virtue (Canto 1).
