Mysterious, dark, creepy- these traits may seem like an average halloween story; however, they really are elements from Tim Burton’s unique film styles. Tim Burton, a film director, was born in Burbank, California. He spent most of his childhood drawing and watching horror films. As Burton puts it, “I did grow up watching monster movies and I did enjoy playing in the cemetery, but I thought most kids did. It didn’t seem strange to me.” In Charlie and The Chocolate Factory, Edward Scissorhands, and Corpse Bride, Burton employs camera movements and editing techniques to display that anti-heros are relatable and no different from society. In the movie Charlie and The Chocolate Factory, he employs fade which generates curiosity. For instance, when Wonka remembers his dad and calls out “Papa?”, it makes the the viewers wonder what happened between him and his father. This scene portrays Wonka as someone who might not have had a normal childhood. Furthermore, in the film Edward Scissorhands, Burton utilizes flashback which creates understanding for the audience. Specifically, for Christmas, Edward gets his hands but simultaneously, his inventor dies, making the viewers pity his past. This scene and use of editing techniques reveals Edward as an outcast and a loner. Finally, in his film Corpse Bride, he uses dissolve which creates a strange and worrisome scene. Particularly, in the scene when Victor is walking off the bridge and going into the woods, dissolve allows this scene to make the viewers have great sympathy for Victor and reveals Victor as an unusual individual.
