Do you know of someone who has abused the power bestowed upon them? Some people change when they get power over other people. Steinbeck has really captrured this in the book Of Mice And Men. One of the themes of this book is ‘Individuals in positions of power are often cruel to those without them.’ This is shown by the way Curley acts to everyone because hes the bosses son. One of the ways the author shows us this is with Curley’s Wife. Curley’s Wife is cruel when she speaks to Crooks. She says “’I could get you strung up so easy it ain’t even funny’” (Steinbeck 81). When she says this she wants to make sure Crooks understands that she has power over him. Steinbeck also uses a character by the name of Curley. Curley thinks that he
George felt though an extremely difficult choice, killing Lennie himself was the right decision. Curley was gonna get his revenge and George did not want that because he did not want Lennie to die painfully. “‘I’ll kill the big son-of-a-bitch myself. I’ll shoot him in the guts.’”(Steinbeck 96). When Lennie killed Curley’s wife, Curley wanted to give him the most painful death. Curley wanted to shoot Lennie in the stomach which wouldn’t kill you at first, Instead you would bleed out slowly and painfully. George didn’t want Lennie to suffer so he knew he had to get to Lennie before Curley did and kill Lennie the fastest and least painful death he could which he did. The harsh reality is one which hit everyone in America in the 1930. People found work hard to find and crime was on the uprise. This meant, unfortunately, that innocent people were the easy prey and, as we see in the Of Mice and Men, there were plenty of characters that were easy prey. Of Mice and Men characters have and do thing that make them vulnerable in way which do cause trouble. In this essay, that harsh reality and easy prey will be shown through to see which characters are the most vulnerable.
The book, Of Mice and Men is not just about the death of Lennie, as one might think, it’s also about power. Throughout the book, one can observe each character’s attempts to gain influence over the ranch crew, or at least to be accepted into a society. However, only one man can be on top, and that man became Slim, the ageless jerkline skinner. Unlike Curley, he lead with an understanding mind instead of abusing the power gained by achieving the American Dream.
All people have power, some people are just more powerful than others. Having power is the ability to create change. Examples of power being used wrongly is during the French revolution, and the residential school crisis. During the French revolution, two examples were shown of people abusing their power. King Louie XVI raised taxes so that he could buy things that he and his wife Marie Antoinette wanted, and took away rights from the third estate. In the residential schools crisis, the teachers, priests and nuns had power over the students and abused the students in different ways. Superior people take away the rights from those who are below them, but they end up corrupt.
Of Mice and Men, by Steinbeck, shows many different views on society. This book has a lot different messages you can take and apply to real life. All the people in the story can relate to someone today and also to some stuff that still happens all around the world. When reading this book you can really start to understand and connect with the characters and identify their weaknesses and their strengths. Some things you really start to notice is how powerful some people are and how they use that power in everyday living. Many characters had power, because of that it helped some get by, helped some take advantage and boss people around, but power also hurt them.

One needs to be honest, know right from wrong and have respect for others and without these basic principles do not expect anything positive to come from a person. He or she will abuse power when it is given, as they does not perceive it as wrong. In Ken Keseys’ One Flew Over The Cuckoo’s Nest both Nurse Ratched and McMurphy abuse their power over the other patients in the ward. They have different ways and motive but it can be narrowed down to personal gain. Power is easily abused when the person possessing it is never challenged, actively seeks it and feels entitled to it. It could be said that the abusers are fully aware of what they are doing, but although aware of it, that does not mean they are doing it just because they can. The distinction between the use and abuse of power is a matter of perception. Abusers generally do not perceive themselves as abusing, merely using it to pursue their goals.
Chapter 2 starts out in the bunkhouse. Lennie and George just got new jobs and they were just told were they would be staying while they work there. In this chapter we were introduced to Curley’s wife, most of the workers here did not like his wife. Then, when George and Lenny were introduced to Curly he looked like he could start a fight with Lennie, because Lennie is big guy and Curly isn't he feels he needs to prove himself. After, George promised Lennie a puppy since one of the workers had a litter of puppies. Following, the workers suggested that they get the swamper a puppy since his dog is so old he can barely walk. Under the jurisdiction of men in their families, women are oftentimes restrained from opportunity and development. Curley, a man with an intimidating complexion, forces many, including his flirtatious wife, to succumb to his power. However, he fails to recognize his wife’s rising empowerment as she manipulates men around him into becoming her pawns. John Steinbeck’s usage of Curley’s wife in the novel Of Mice and Men delineates the desire of women to eliminate the over dominance of men through deceit in exchange for their own power.
There is only one way an author can get their readers to cry, laugh, and love or just enjoy their master pieces.
