The human body is a mesmerizing, complicated and intelligent structure comprised of millions of sensitive nerves, hundreds of strong muscles, bones that give shape and strength, a brain that can process immeasurable amounts of information, a heart that beats 24/7 to keep blood flowing, and hundreds of other incredible inner workings that keep humans alive and functioning. With these structures comes the incredible ability of the human body to heal itself. When injury occurs the recognition is immediate and the body’s attempt at beginning the healing process is only a split second after that. Although humans are equipped with a body that can, in some situations, heal itself, some injuries and illnesses are far too great for the body to cope with on its own. This is where physical therapists come in. By carefully working the muscles, stretching, and using massage and pressure techniques, physical therapists give injured areas of the body a helping hand in gaining strength so that healing can begin and pain can disappear. Throughout the first part of the 20th century, there were marvelous strides of expertise in medical practice. This quickly improving medical practice included the use of physical therapy, used oftentimes by teams of medical personnel working with severely injured soldiers after their time in war. The 1940’s polio epidemic was also a loud cry for the assistance of physical therapists due to the hundreds of victims left paralyzed or extremely weakened.
