How Does Heroin Cause Addiction?
Introduction:
Heroin is an illegal class A drug that mostly comes as a powder processed form of opium. It is made using the resin of poppy plants. Opium is taken from the pod and than refined into morphine (the synthetic form of heroin) and than heroin. It is estimated that 9.2 million people around the world use heroin. Heroin is extremely addictive. Addiction is when somebody consumes a substance or undertakes an activity that is enjoyable however, after extended use, normal life becomes disrupted and possibly dangerous. Drug use begins with investigation and therefore, testing the drug. After original use, the drug may begin to be taken regularly and so use of the drug becomes a pattern: some time after first try, you become tolerant (pleasurable effects are decreased). A period after this, you become dependent: this entails the drug being necessary for you to feel regular. Finally, you become addicted and substance abuse become uncontrollable.
There are many clear symptoms: when you are dependent on a drug, it can mean powerful cravings and uncontrollable use so, when the amount of the drug is low, the person can have physical and emotional withdrawal issues. Furthermore, a symptom of addiction could be obsession with ways in which you can receive the substance. Two more common symptoms are: over abundant usage and difficulty with controlling life away from the substance: relationships can break down and lives can erode away. In the 1803 opium became dwarfed by its new brother morphine which is named in honor of the Greek god Morpheus who is the god of dreams. Heroin became a solution to struggle. So common it was almost as if heroin was a prescribed medicine for hardship. The multi-causal model of drug abuse takes into account social and individual causes of addiction, both distant and immediate, that lead to a disposition to using drugs, drug use and the social and individual consequences. Why a person becomes addicted to drugs or alcohol is different for everyone. Some are genetically predisposed, some learn it from their environment (i.e. family or friends), and still others use it to avoid a trauma they have experienced. There are physical signs of addiction, and these include drowsiness, constricted pupils, nausea, and dry mouth (Drugs of Abuse). These signs occur when addicted to both opioids and heroin. The repeated use of drugs often causes both physical and psychological dependence, as mentioned in an article by the Funk & Wagnalls New World Encyclopedia (“Drug Dependence”). In order for an individual to truly be set free from their addiction, seeking treatment is necessary. Rehab centers are a great place with scientifically proven methods to cure those addicted to drugs. It is important to try to end drug use in our country, rather than allowing it to continue longer than it already has. While funding for rehabilitation facilities could become an issue, drug users may continue their addiction without proper treatment, and therefore those arrested for drug use should be sent to a rehabilitation center instead of prison.

The addiction affects the addict’s health, career and relationships. I can tell you from personal experience with having family members who were addicts, that I was traumatized growing up. This is why it is important for the addict to seek help because they cannot get rid of the issue on their own. Most of the time, addicts go through some sort of rehab treatment and when they are released they are instructed to go to meetings that help with the aftermath of addiction. Just a few of these groups are places like Alcoholics/Narcotics Anonymous, or even Celebrate Recovery. Although some places believe that these programs do not work, it is well worth mentioning that the success rates depend on the want to of the person working them. These individuals devote themselves completely to certain substance that allows them to forget about their reality and leads them into a world of ecstasy, one which they are unable to reach without it. Continuously, their addiction takes over their lives and turns them into "slaves" of the substance causing their lives to fall apart and eventually leads to being homeless, in jail, or dead. However, there are other forms of addiction whether is a mild addiction and not as severe as drugs or alcohol but it still falls under its definition. Some examples of addictions that we do not notice are pornography, internet, television, eating, entertainment, and money. Most of these examples have their own negative aspects. Also, others might have a dependency on unhealthy eating habits which eventually leads to their bodies suffering from a broad range of medical conditions. Others also tend to create a dependency on shopping and spending money on unnecessary materials. Lastly, some individuals also have bad habits that involve constant lying and deceiving. All of these examples are just a few of the things that fall under the umbrella of what an addiction truly is and each has a negative connotation to it.
