DEVELOPMENT OF ELLIE LINTON – TOMORROW WHEN THE WAR BEGAN The 1993 John Marsden novel, Tomorrow, When the War Began, explores the challenges faced by a group of seven teenage friends after returning from an adventurous camping trip and being faced by a war. Ellie, the protagonist, as a result of the experiences she has faced, has undergone development into adulthood. Ellie was able to change and develop through her relationship with others around her. Her growth was influenced by the increasing independence she showed. The experiences she has faced have resulted in a boost in her self-confidence and this has allowed her to mature and develop into adulthood. I had to search my own mind and body to find if there was a new part of me somewhere.” (pg. 81) This demonstrates Ellie’s independence when the author positions the audience to believe that she is entering a situation that she has never faced before. this shows independence as she would be encountering something without the assistance of others around her and would have to depend on her own decisions and actions in order to stay safe. Independence, as well as initiative and courage, were part of Ellie’s development into adulthood. As Ellie’s character develops through the novel, so does her self-confidence. When Ellie, Corrie and Kevin were running to the showground to check up on their families, she was forced to run across an open ground that was protected by bright, reflective lights. In order for the three to be safe and get a closer look, they had to run across. In order for Ellie to safely run to the other side, with the thought of potentially getting caught, she needed to build a lot of self-confidence. Ellie, while explaining it to be a “dangerous and terrible thing” (pg. 81), was willing to risk and sacrifice herself and this shows her confidence.
