In the Diary of Anne Frank many of these characters showed these characteristics during their two years in hiding at the Annex. The Franks and the Van Daans and Mr. dussel went into hiding between 1942-1944. They went into hiding in an attic apartment behind Mr. Frank's business. Mr. Franks and Mrs Frank had two daughters, Anne, 13 is very active, emotional and loud unlike her older sister Margot who is 18 and she is beautiful, shy and quiet. Frank showed the most courage. According to google.com, courage is “the ability to do something that frightens one.”(google.com) Mr. Frank showed courage when he went to check see what was happening down stairs. After a lamp was knocked down making a loud sound by Peter. Everyone in the Annex was worried because they had heard someone downstairs in the office. A robber had broken into the office and Mr. Frank was the only one brave enough to go down and check who was downstairs. Anne didn’t want her dad to go downstairs to check on the robber so she started begging and crying for him not to go. On an early morning in July of 1942, the Van Daans and Franks meet up for the first time at the annex. All of them are covered in layers of clothing to carry as much to their new home as possible. They are all introduced to each other. Living in the secret annex is Mr. and Mrs. Van Daan, Peter Van Daan, Mr. and Mrs. Frank, Margot, and Anne Frank. Mr. Van Daan is a selfish, greedy man. Mrs. Van Daan likes the finer things, thinks pretty highly of herself and adores her husband. Peter is shy, quiet, and just truly doesn’t say much. Mr. Frank is a kind, caring, leading man. Mrs. Frank is motherly, caring, and sweet. Margo does as others say and tries to keep a low-key profile. Anne is wild and unique. She doesn’t let others push her around, and she is very independent. Everyone in the annex is very different.

Throughout the holocaust, many Jews survived by going into hiding to escape the harsh fates and realities that would otherwise await the opressed. The Diary of a Young Girl allows readers to witness and experience a small idea of what Jews in hiding during the holocaust suffered. Some may have lost one's life, but Otto Frank, Anne's Frank's father, survived the holocaust through hiding. The secret annex became the shelter for Otto Frank, his family, and several others Jews starting July sixth, 1942(www.annefrank.org). The annex provided a barrier from the Nazis and death camps for two years before the Gestapo discovered the Franks and others and sent the Jews to concentration camps for the remainder of the holocaust(www.ushmm.org). The others in hiding with Frank lost their lives, leaving Otto Frank the sole survivor from the secret annex. His time in hiding happened to save his life, making him a survivor of the holocaust(www.ushmm.org).

Another important issue that the author brings up is the fact that the Franks were better informed than other Jews about the extirmination camps. The other Jews had no knowledge about these camps, making it a little bit more reasonable for the others to want to stick together as a family. The Franks, however, knew this and they still did nothing to prepare for the Nazis. The author also had some ideas for the Franks to prepare for the invasion when the Nazis came, even though they stayed together. He suggested that Mr. Frank could have had some form of protection, such as a gun; Mr. Frank could have tried to detain the police when they came, while his family could try to run to safety. Sure, Mr. Frank would have been killed of beaten, but he could have done a better job of protecting his family.
The Holocaust was a time in which millions of people were persecuted and mistreated: people banned together and stood up against prejudice and discrimination by actively and passively opposing the Germans. Citizens that actively resisted used violence and force to directly attack the Nazis in attempt to save their life. Those that preferred, prepared to resist passively by not using physical brutality, but instead continued their daily lives out of the sight of the Nazis. In “The Diary of Anne Frank,” we see how Meip, a Dutch Citizen resisted the Germans passively, by hiding the Frank family and four other Jewish families in a secret annex above Anne’s father's business premise during World War Two. Three weeks before they were found Anne wrote in her diary: “Day and night during every waking hour, I do nothing but ask myself have you given him enough chance to be alone? Have you been spending too much time upstairs? Do you talk about serious subjects he’s not yet ready to talk about...?” (Frank 212) They were discovered after two years of hiding and were deported to concentration camps. Her father is the only one of the eight people to survive in the concentration camps. She is an inspiration to many people around the world to have gone through all that at such a young age. Through everything she went through she had kept a diary. Anne Frank had a crazy, but scary childhood, but a good family by her side every step of the way, she died at a young age, and kept a diary which was published into a book.
In the book of Anne Frank there are the Van Daan’s and the Franks. Then there's the people that help them which are Mr. Kraler and Miep. the Van Daan’s and Frank’s are in hiding because they were taking jews to concentration camps and had to go into hiding. With the rise of Hitler, Otto Frank, Anne’s father, moved his family to Amsterdam in order to escape the escalating persecution of Jews. Anne attended Amsterdam's Sixth Montessori School and throughout the 1930s experienced a normal childhood, free of anti-semitism. For her thirteenth birthday, Anne received the diary that would encase her everlasting story. On July 5th, 1942, Anne’s sister, Margot, received a notice to be deported to a work camp, leaving no choice but to go into hiding immediately. Anne Frank was a 13-year-old Jewish girl who was thrown into one of the worst periods in the history of the world; the Holocaust. Though she went through awful things that many people will never experience, she always kept the faith that there was still some good in everyone. She once said, “Despite everything I still believe people are truly good at heart.” Her diary, which she kept while her family was in hiding from the Nazis, shows the triumph of her spirit over the evil in the world even through the pain of adolescence. The Franks and Van Dans were hiding and they suffered many hardships, mentally and physically. Many people in Anne’s situation would have become bitter and resentful, but Anne never would despair.
Courage: the quality of mind or spirit that enables a person to face difficulty, danger, pain, etc., without fear; bravery. Courage plays a very large role in the plot of Harper Lee’s To Kill a Mockingbird. There are many different acts of courage throughout the novel, but the most courageous act comes from a character that is arguably more courageous than superman, Atticus Finch. Atticus literally defines courage. He stands up for justice, even when he knows that there is no possibility of winning. Scout Finch, the offspring of Atticus, also shows signs of courage throughout the novel. She especially shows true courage in dire situations. A character that shows signs of courage that we don’t really notice until the end of the novel is Mrs. Dubose, who is very mean to the kids because of a battle she is fighting on the inside.
In June 1942 Anne received a diary for her 13th birthday. She began to write down her thoughts and experiences in the form of letters to an imaginary friend. One month later the Franks went into hiding in the office building. For the next two years the Frank family shared cramped quarters with four other Jewish people. In the ending the people she lived with were the ones that published her diary.
II. Contrary to the light and amusing tone of the first few entries of Anne Frank, her revelation of her family background uncovers sneak-peeks to the Jewish life in the Second World War, including the restrictive laws implemented by the Nazis against the particular group of people. Prior to Anne’s first diary entry, the Franks, namely Otto, Edith, and their children, Anne and Margot, had emigrated to Holland from Germany to escape Hitler’s propaganda of Anti-Semitism. However, soon, they realized that they had not been liberated yet from the claws of discrimination when Anne’s elder sister, Margot, was summoned by the S.S., the elite Nazi guards, for a call-up, implying that she would be sent to a concentration camp.

Anne and her family called it the 'Secret Annex'. Life there was not easy at all. They had to wake up at 6:45 every morning. Nobody could go outside, nor turn on lights at night. Anne mostly spent her time reading books, writing stories, and of course, making daily entries in her diary. She only kept her diary while hiding from the Nazis. This diary told the story of the excitement and horror in this young girl's life during the Holocaust. Anne Frank: The Diary of a Young Girl reveals the life of a young innocent girl who is forced into hiding from the Nazis because of her religion, Judaism. This book is very informing and enlightening. It introduces a time period of discrimination, unfair judgment, and power-crazed individuals, and with this, it shows the effect on the defenseless.
