How does animal neglect affect the community?
Everyone has heard those commercials about animal abuse and how animals need homes, yet you don’t see very many of them. Let alone hear very many people that are actually inspired enough to go out and help. Animal neglect has a rapid spreading rate once it is accepted by even a few and results in increased amounts of violence and other aggressive behavior towards the animals themselves and people.
Animals are constantly being neglected because people do not believe they could ever be equals and that they have to assert their dominance by physical or mentally abusing that animal. They are being poisoned, drugged, malnourished, burned, mutilated and all kinds of all abuse techniques that should send them to jail for the next ten years. ”Of 1,880 cruelty cases* reported in the media in 2007: 64.5% (1,212) involved dogs, 18% (337) involved cats and 25% (470) involved other animals” (Humane Society).
This problem has grown out of control due to neglect to admit that if people just went and neutered their animals this problem would not keep increasing. The population is increasing and so more animals are getting injured from living on the streets and people not caring when they see them hurt on the side of the road.
The Ohlone Humane Society is a non-profit organization based in the local bay area that deals with all animals and provides services for volunteers wanting to help rid ourselves of the animal neglect issue. The organization is funded through donations, volunteers and fundraisers in order to fund their many different service programs such as aiding and rescuing animals, neutering and aiding local shelters throughout Northern California. ...ad ready to use and I noticed something. They were the same types of tools you would see in a normal human hospital, but on a much smaller scale. This naturally made sense since the animals were not very big except for an occasional bigger animal.
Doing this service allowed me to gain more experience about how some organizations are trying to help solve the problem and to even participate in their programs. I saw how this non-profit had a way with animals allowing them a deeper connection then what most people are able to achieve.

Four journalists named Helen Jones, Larry Andrews, Marcia Glaser, and Fred Myers thought it would be a good idea to create a nonprofit organization to help animals that have are treated cruelly by either abuse or when they are left alone. The Humane Society has been helping animals since November 24, 1954(2). Their mission since the beginning has been celebrating animals and confronting cruelty. There are a great number of things that the Humane Society has been doing for the animals, like saving them from people who want to harm them. The list of animals that the Humane Society helps is very long, because they don’t just help the household pets that you might have thought. There are solutions though to this problem. Such as spay/neuter programs, more shelters, and euthanization. There are better ways to prevent more animal overpopulation though like contracts that breeders have to sign. We need to put a stop to the issue of animal overpopulation. Would you want animals dying because there aren’t enough homes and you spending your tax dollars for animal killing chemicals?
The lack of awareness programs attributes to animal hoarding greatly. The Robinson Rescue is an organization that “educate[s] pet owners about the importance of spay/neuter as a means of ending pet overpopulation.” ( ). Animals are used today for many sources of protection, food, clothing, transportation, sports, entertainment, and labor, but millions of these animals die each year from abuse. “Most of the reasons that people give for denying animals rights are: animals do not have souls, god gave humans dominion over the animals, humans are intellectually superior to animals, humans are intellectually superior to animals, animals do not reason, think, or feel pain like humans do, animals are a natural resource to used as humans see fit, and animals kill each other” (Evans). It all started in the nineteenth century, when people began abusing animals by beating them, feeding them poorly, providing them with no shelter or poor shelter, left to die if they were sick or old, or by cruel sports. Most of the organized efforts to improve human treatment of animals all started in England. Around the 1800s, there was signs of rising concern for animal welfare in the United States.
Selecting to do my service learning at Harvest Hope Food Bank was a very impactful experience. This was so, because of the fact that I have never volunteered at a food bank until now. The organization was able to connect me with the required skills I will practice throughout my career as a professional social worker, therefore better preparing me for assisting clients who may be dependent on my services.
Countless lives locked away in cages and forgotten about have overwhelmed our society, it has left blood stains on our history as a species and if history has taught us anything, it’s that we have a choice to change our ways of adjusting to situations. A war which was fought in pursuit of ending such criminal means, yet we as human beings do little to nothing to end the horrific crimes of animal deaths in shelters. It is no secret that this world has become infused with problems that have extended from one side of the globe to the other. Amongst these problems lies a terrible truth: nearly every year, sums of almost eight million cats and dogs have been placed in shelters around the world. Out of these vast numbers, half will be euthanized; that equals to one animal being put down every 8 seconds. Animals that are not adopted are kept in shelters until they find a home. Most of these shelters do not have enough space or resources to care for the animal. Only 15% of dogs and 2% of cats that enter animal shelters are reunited with their owners. The majority of pets are obtained from acquaintances and family members. Twenty-six percent of dogs are purchased from breeders, 20 to 30 percent of cats and dogs are adopted from shelters and rescues, and 2 to 10 percent are purchased from pet shops. In addition, only 56% of dogs and 71% of cats that enter animal shelters are euthanized. According to the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, 7.6 million companion pets enter animal shelters across the United States each year, nearly evenly disrupted between dogs and cats . These animals are abandoned for reasons including families no longer being able to care for them (sickness/death of an owner), to families not wanting them (the novelty wearing of the animal wearing off), to the animals being born into puppy mills to finally animals that are loved being lost from their owners. These animals do not understand what is happening to them and rely on the kindness of humans to provide for them in shelters until their forever home can be found.

Every 60 seconds an animal is abused. Dogs, cats, horses, and many other types of animals are being neglected and tortured everyday, yet resulting in few and minor consequences for the perpetrators. Animal abuse is prevalent in the United States and has been an ongoing issue since the 1970's, and prior to. Society as a whole has chosen to avoid the facts and arguments about animal cruelty, because to some it is seen as acceptable and typical. It becomes much more frowned upon when people actually see the results of the cruelty, especially in the media.
Volunteering at Animal Talk was really an eye-opening experience. For my whole life, I have loved taking care of animals, and by volunteering at Animal Talk, I was able to see what really went into the process of caring for animals. I was able to learn valuable information while doing something I love, because Missy actually wanted to teach me. Learning how to care for animals made me re-visit my childhood dream of becoming a vet and I hope to pursue it in the future.

Animal abuse is a travesty in our world that must be stopped. Every year, millions of animals suffer because of human actions, directly or indirectly. Whether it’s abused dogs and cats or even mistreated circus animals, their suffering is as real as it would be if it happened to us. Even animals who are raised on farms simply for human consumption should not have to suffer. One of the worst parts of humanity’s role in animal abuse is that there are easy ways for people to help that they are either ignorant of or simply refuse to do. There are many examples of animals who are abused by humans, but there are also ways for people to help prevent and put an end to animal abuse.
Shelters all across the United States are filled with yapping, meowing, and barking animals. If these animals are not adopted in time to make room for more unwanted animals, they are euthanized. Animals are breeding quickly, causing fluctuation in the animal population. It is almost literally raining cats and dogs. An effective way to combat this problem is the spay and neuter the animals to ensure they do not reproduce. Spaying and neutering animals will decrease the animal population and prevent many animals from being put into crowded shelters and euthanized.
Many people who abuse animals do not realize that they are actually hurting animals, this is known as unintentional. When some people try to discipline their pets they use tactics that they think is acceptable, when in reality is probably not the best way. People also abuse animals due to lack of attention, such as forgetting to feed and water the animals for a number of days. A family may take the animals with them when they leave the house, and forget to leave a window down with the animal inside. One of the biggest unintentional ways of animal cruelty is a way that many people think is helpful but is actually has a negative impact on all of the animals involved, this idea is trying to take in more animals than one can handle, they have good intentions but this is harmful to animals because it forces them to live in unhealthy conditions. There are many new cases of animal hoarding every year, with over 250,000 animals falling victim. Puppy mills are large dog breeding’s that care more about making money than the wellbeing and health of the animals. Many dogs become ill with diseases such as kidney or heart disease as a result of the conditions in which they live.
