The media has a lot of power to influence its viewers and to whoever the viewer spread the medias opinion. The Civil Rights Movement is an example of the medias power in influencing it’s viewers and readers. The media used this movement to transform U.S.A. They showed the violence in segregation and the worthiness of African American goal for equal rights. There are some ways that the media used that brought awareness of the Civil Rights Movement to Americans. One is the print media and how they brought attention to its readers. Second is the broadcasting media and how their coverage made an immediate and huge effect to its viewers. Over 80 percent of Americans had television in their homes for everyone to watch and they were able to be televised worldwide. When the March on Washington was televised in 1963 it was the first event to be broadcast live around the world. It was heavily broadcast to where other channels would interrupt their broadcasts to show footage of what was going on in the peaceful march. From what was shown around the world it brought a big impression on Americans about civil right problems. White conservative were saying that T.V. programs and news were instigating African American protests and were making race relations in the south bad. Some people say that it was because of the North television that got African Americans fired up and ready to protest. They started pinning the racial conflicts on television as a prime cause of it. African Americans started to interact with T.V. They were getting interviewed during their marches and protests. Television gave African American a way to communicate with all viewers for support and awareness. News reporters went to places that white people didn’t want to go like black churches, their legal offices, their homes, and their meetings. When the media broadcasted this it showed white the truth on what happened in their community. The media gave whites their only chance to see images and the speeches of African American leaders. Most of these coverages were surprising. Because of televised media it help blacks gain support from some whites who ended up marching, protesting and spending time in jail with blacks. This gave a contradiction to the people who thought the media was making racial conflict worst because of lack of knowledge. The broadcasting media really make a bigger impact then the print media.
