Socrates grew up at a time when Pericles was in power. Pericles was known as the first liberal politician who believed that all man deserved liberty regardless of their wealth and status. As an adult, Socrates was always mocked by society for his views. The people in his community originally thought of him in a comical way, like in the play Clouds that was written by Aristophanes. Socrates was depicted as a man "stalking the streets" and "rolling his eyes at anything unintelligent." By about 417 B.C.E., Aristophanes wrote another play about Socrates called Birds. However, around this time is when it is thought that Socrates was considered a threat to Athenian values. In 345 BCE Aechines stated Athens executed Socrates due to his association with the Thirty Tyrants, and believed his teachings influenced them and was therefore a threat to the democracy, despite there being evidence that Socrates opposed the Thirty Tyrants. Even though Socrates was tried for invalid reasons before a jury likely ready to convict him already, it is argued he could have persuaded the jury to realize his innocents, yet he did not. One of the last lessons Socrates left upon the world was proof that even if the masses all agree to something, it does not make it true. While the majority of the jury found him guilty, it is clear he was not and the majority of people believing something to be true, does not make it true. Socrates knew the truth; most of the peers surrounding him knew the truth. Persuasion is all a trial is; the ability to persuade a large group of people to believe what you want them to believe. Back in Athenian time just as in the world today people hold age to wisdom. When a young man is preaching against the beliefs of many others it is brushed off to their age, or blamed on his teachers. When you are known as the teacher and a great teacher to some society will hold you accountable to up-keeping their views and laws. Right or wrong as an influence during Athenian time Socrates was expected to know what his associations and teachings would cause and maybe that is why is was so vocal with his views. He admits to his urge to be listened to. Socrates could have been just feeding his ego through the courts the almighty listeners or maybe he knew that if he didn 't change his opinion in front the courts and was put to death that he would be embedded into history forever, all press is good press! People now argue what they believe in when it comes to Socrates cause there is no actual proof which is what he pushed people to
