Slavery was a prominent part of the South section of America at one time. Commonly, southerners owned at least a few slaves. Despite the fact that slavery has existed since the 1700s, it has immensely changed. Most slaves in the 1700s were males from Africa or the Caribbean. In contrast, most slaves in the 1830s were females that were born in America. Slavery was simply less complicated in the 1700s.
The plantation life for slaves was brutal. Slaves worked from sunrise to sundown along with the fellow slaves owned by their masters. The elderly often took care of the children, milked cows, and cooked since they were in too poor of condition to work in the field. If slaves disobeyed their owners in any way, they would be punished. Whips were often used on the slaves to harm them. Pregnant slaves would have to lie on their stomachs while they got whipped on their back. All slaves endured the brutal beatings from their owners. Some slaveholders pitied the slaves for the way they treated them, but most believed the discipline taught them lessons. There were some slaves that achieved the respect of their owners. These slaves were allowed to help in the owner’s house, causing them to believe they were more important than the field working slaves. Family was an important part of slave’s lives. Slaves would get married, but it was not guaranteed that they would remain on the same plantation as their significant other. Marriages were encouraged by slaveholders, so women would have more children that could be future slaves for their plantations. In this way, slaveholders received free slaves. Slaves had a loose meaning for the word family. They would consider their friends to be their sisters, brothers, aunts, or uncles.
