Oliver Cromwell
Oliver Cromwell was an English military and political leader and later Lord Protector of the Commonwealth of England, Scotland, and Ireland. Cromwell was born into the middle gentry, albeit to a family descended from the sister of King Henry VIII's minister Thomas Cromwell. Cromwell was a Puritan. He was a highly religious man who believed that everybody should lead their lives according to what was written in the Bible. The word “Puritan” means that followers had a pure soul and lived a good life. Cromwell believed that everybody else in England should follow his example. Oliver Cromwell and his generals of his own army ruled the twelve districts of England. He tore up constitutionalist documents. He closed down pubs,

Oliver Cromwell was a well known military dictator. He helped the Parliamentarians win the First Civil War and was named Lord Protector. He died in 1658 but many people still remember him as one of the best leaders in history although others believe he was a harsh tyrant and always wanted too much power for himself. Throughout the years, numerous historians have changed their views on whether he was a good leader or not. This work will look at three interpretations from different people on who Cromwell was and what he was like and compare them.

In 1534, King Henry VIII formally instigated the English Reformation. Puritans were looking for a more Protestant church and received what they wanted. Along with it, came the King’s total control over the Church. This is what the Puritans didn’t want. Puritans believed that ordinary Christians, not a church hierarchy, should control religious life. They wanted a distinct line between government and the Church of England. Puritans also wanted to eliminate the customs of Catholic worship and instead focus on an individual’s relationship with God developed through Bible study, prayer, and introspection (Roark, 68).
By the early 1600's, the Puritans composed a small minority of England's religious groups. The religion desired to purify the recently reformed Church Of England and rid it of all remnants of Catholicism. Puritans desired to see the government and Church more biblical and more representative. Yet, the government and the Anglican church of England denied their aspirations for more than 20 years. There was hope in the death of James I and the crowning of his son, Charles I. Nonetheless, King Charles faced more adversity than ever before. The adversity and chaos came in the form of John Pym.
That the Rump Parliament had absolutely no achievements at all to its name is a strong statement. As a governing body setup by the remnants of Pride's Purge, the MP's that remained were all wanted there originally, indeed by the very man that would eventually dissolve them -- Oliver Cromwell. So something had certainly led Cromwell to become increasingly disillusioned with the Parliament he in sense created. Henry implemented many methods in order to control the nobility with varying success. Henry sought to limit the power of the nobles as he was acutely aware the dangers of over mighty subjects with too much power and little love for the crown or just wanted a change like Richard Neville, Earl of Warwick who deposed two kings to replace them. Also Henry’s own rise to the throne was helped by nobles dislike towards Richard III. By restricting the nobles Henry wanted to reduce the power of the nobles and possible threats against him and return the nobles from their quasi king status to leaders in their local areas but under the power of the crown.
Oliver Cromwell was a man that was of low birth that rose to the top of society in his time. He was fearless in battle and in politics fighting anything that got in his way. The bull of a man took many bashings and still live for years. To some people Oliver Cromwell was a great leader by bring together the United Kingdom and becoming the Lord Protector of the Commonwealth. These people also thought he was a sincere protect of religion and would make the kingdom prosper. To the others, he was considered to be dictatorial murder, who use his Puritanical beliefs to make a mask for his lust of power.
