 Jim Crow laws were state and local laws that were created in Southern United States to enforce racial segregation. Enacted after the Reconstruction period, Jim Crow laws lasted until 1965 and mandated racial segregation in all public facilities. However, during this period of time federal law provided civil rights protection to all free individuals regardless of their skin tone.
