Over the past 150 years people have changed. The human ways have changed. In the 1800’s anyone who was not “white” was considered not worthy or unequal to the “white” race. Now everyone in the United States is to be treated equal and they are all given equal rights. With each generation, kids are being taught not to see color, but to see everyone as humans just like they are. People’s human nature on how to act on these things have changed.
In the 1800’s, people of color were considered lowly and set to be slaves. Source E states, “We have no animus against the white man.” This statement shows what the people of color felt about how they were considered. The people of that time made it to be that way and that’s what they taught their kids.

In the 1800’s it would’ve been considered a crime for a person of color to do anything that a “white” person was doing. They were considered to do one thing and one thing only and that’s work. They weren’t supposed to be writing, making music, or creating art. All of these were used to express someone’s feeling towards a subject and people of color were not allowed to do that. The people of color were using these ways of art to communicate and express how they were treated and how they wanted to be treated. It has opened the eyes of people and changed history. The art itself has changed human nature in many ways and showed that they deserve to be treated the same as everyone else. This is why it was a crime in those times. Now everyone is free to express their feelings in any type of art such as writing, musical art, and making art as an artist. Although Barnes’ marriage was not a successful one, he adored his newborn baby girl, and was heartbroken when his wife left him, taking his daughter with her. At North Carolina College, Barnes majored in art, and developed his own style (Artist Vitae, 1999). When Barnes was a freshman in college he went on a field trip to the newly desegregated North Carolina Museum of Art. At the museum Barnes noticed that there weren’t any works by black artist displayed, and when he asked the guide where the black artists were exhibited, the guide responded, “your people don’t express themselves this way” (Artist Vitae, 1999). That negative response encouraged Barnes to work hard at becoming an artist.
In Ronald Takaki’s book “A Different Mirror” it appeared that anytime race relations changed for the better can be traced back to a historical event. Whether it was war or economics the only time policy changed for the minority groups was because it benefitted the people in power or white society. Ta-Nehisi Coates has also stated that changes for minorities will only come when absolutely necessary for those who are in power. Why does it take war or a cataclysmic economic downturn before people see the appalling way minorities are treated? Dating back to the beginning of times people have always been looked at different depending on the color of their skin or what your religion, race, or beliefs may be. It is in our human nature to not like people for certain things that they are. Many will argue that in this day in age we are no longer at a race war but how can you be so sure when you actually open your eyes and see reality. Rapper Kanye West once said “racism is still alive, they just be concealing it” and these words are everything but false. Some Americans still believe that they are the “real” Americans. After the settlers completely conquered the America, they enslaved Native Americans, blacks, and Asians: Blacks were the biggest victims of American slavery. According to the textbook, “Created Equal,” the settlers, white people, started to “trade slaves” in 1680’s. This event illustrates that whites ruined blacks’ human rights and treated them as their properties. Black men “did not have the right to vote, and their children could not go to public schools” (Jacqueline el at. 2013, p. 228). Most black men “worked as farm hands or manual laborers” and most black women “worked as domestic servants or laundresses”. Because of this historical background, blacks are recognized as workers: whites are recognized as owners. The connection of race and race relations in the United States was an ongoing issue, and while much progress was made, there are still people who revert back to old and ignorant takes on different races as the white man. This clearly relates to my own history based on the fact that various races are still being discriminated and treated unfairly and looked at as unequal. I can only hope that one day the whole population of the world can do the right thing and look at everyone as equals.
As every child grows up, normally they are taught that everybody is equal. No matter who you are, race, gender, or color, you are just as equal as the person next to you. At least, that was how I was raised. I was raised in a Christian family where I learned that everyone is equal and slavery was a very bad event in American history. The idea of slavery was that slave owners would buy and use people to work on their plantations without needing to pay them. This meant that is was basically free labor.
