How Bill Gates Has Changed the World Bill Gates born as William Henry Gates III on October 28, 1995. He was born and raised in Seattle, Washington. Gates’s father was William H. Gates Sr, a legal scholar. His mother, Mary Maxwell Gates who was a school teacher. Gates has two sisters. His older sister is Kristianne and younger sister is Libby. Gates grew up in a strict household and his family was very close and loving. They were all very close and loved each other. Gates showed early signs of competitiveness when he was young and always wanted to be the best in whatever he did as he got older this helped him in life. He spent multiple hours reading books such as the encyclopedia. Gates’s parents had concerns about him and not because he wasn’t doing good at school, but because he was doing great and seemed withdrawn and bored at times. His parents enrolled him into Lakeside School, Seattle's exclusive preparatory school. While at Lakeside he was challenged more, but still excelled in every course. Lakeside offered computer time for students and purchased a teletype terminal for them to use. Gates became extremely captivated with computers and spent free time experimenting with them. He said in an interview “I wrote my first software program when I was thirteen years old. It was for playing tic-tac-toe. The computer I used was huge and cumbersome and slow and absolutely compelling.”(Lesinski 15) Gates made several different programs including one at 17 years old that he sold for $4,200. In 1970 when they were both 15 years old, they created “Traf-O-Data” a program that watched traffic pattern in Washington. They both earned $20,000 each. This was the start of Gates becoming a businessman. Gates got into Harvard University in 1973 to pursue a career in law because of his parents. This obviously didn't work out. He was always spending more time in the computer labs than in class. Two years later in 1975 Gates dropped out of Harvard to create a business because he thought he could make more money. Gates and his friend Paul Allen created the name Micro-Soft. That was Microcomputer and Software mixed together. By the year 1979 Micro-soft now known as Microsoft was grossing around $2.5 million and Gates was 23 and the head of the company.
Gates in 1981 started developing software for IBM and Microsoft started booming. Gates staff went from around 20 people to 130 people and the revenue went from $2.5 million to $16 million. Gates was made the chairman of the board and president. His partner Paul Allen was named executive vice president. Gates later created MS-DOS which changed the world. Now we have Windows 10 that is based from MS-DOS. Almost anywhere you go these days there is a computer running Microsoft the software Gates
