Beowulf came to Geatland to kill the monster they call Greandel. He will kill him not for gold but for glory. Hrogthgar begins the celebration to lure Grendel in. Beowulf kills Grendel and later goes to kill Grendels mother. He ends up laying with her and gives her a child. Then years later Grendels mother send her new child the dragon to kill its father Beowulf. Beowulf ripped the dragons heart out with one of his hands, killing the dragon and saving the kingdom but not himself. Beowulf came to Geatland to kill the monster Grendel. Beowulf said he will kill the monster not for gold but for glory. He fights Grendel evenly with no armor, weapons, or clothing. He ripped Grendels arm off and Grendel fled in fear of Beowulf, and ended up dieing later in his cave. Beowulf finds out that there is another monster and its Grendels mother. She had layed with Hrogthgar and that’s how the monster Grendel was created. After Grendel was killed and Hrogthgar dead after jumping off a cliff. She lured Beowulf into her cave and tricked him into laying with her. She tells Beowulf ‘as long as this golden horn stays in my possession you will become and remain king. Years later after making the whole kingdom believe that Grendels mother was dead. Her new son, Beowulf’s son went and destroyed the main hall and Beowulf felt so ashamed about it. So Beowulf goes to her cave to confront her and ends up being chased out by a dragons fiery breath. Beowulf dies killing the dragon/his son. They send his body into the ocean on a boat and set it on fire. Then Grendels mother appears out of nowhere and kisses Beowulf’s dead
Beowulf was a true hero, in the eyes of many, through said traits. He fought a number of battles and was triumphant in all, except his last battle. Beowulf possessed the skills and power necessary to kill Grendel, the monster who had been terrorizing the Danes for over a decade, with his bare hands. While fighting, Beowulf detached Grendel’s arm from his shoulder, which was later hung up as a trophy. Beowulf eventually put an end to Grendel’s life, and naturally, Grendel’s mother had pursued Beowulf. Nobody dared to stop the bravest man in all the land known as Beowulf. Beowulf is the strongest warrior from Geatland. When Beowulf hears about the Danes and Hrothgar’s struggle to keep his men safe, he offers to help. The Danish king, Hrothgar, accepts Beowulf’s request to kill Grendel and his mother. Beowulf proves his strength and becomes famous when he defeats Grendel in a battle using nothing but his bare hands in Herot. He keeps Grendel’s arm as a symbol of his victory. Grendel’s mother looks for revenge, but she is also killed by the brave warrior. Beowulf becomes the King of Geatland after the king’s son, Heardred, is killed. Beowulf rules for 50 years and he is very successful in keeping peace across the land and Geatland becomes very prosperous. Beowulf later dies after a final fight against a dragon. The Geats build a tower strong and tall just as Beowulf requested so that sailors could find it from far and wide. Beowulf perfectly embodies the Germanic heroic ideal.
When compared the Movie and the Epic have the same story arc (Beowulf and Grendel, Beowulf and Grendel’s Mother and Beowulf and the Dragon). Starting out similarly with Grendel's slaughter of the Danes through Beowulf’s defeat of Grendel. However, turning in the opposite direction when Grendel’s Mother is introduced. Thus interpreting and changing the finer details of said story.
The story begins with Grendel taking the lives of countless innocent men. It seems to all that there is no one who can face this great monster who lives down in the swamp. The king, Hrothgar, becomes concerned for the health of his country and seeks out help from someone of great strength. In hearing this, Beowulf sees it as an opportunity to increase his popularity and fame. Upon arrival, he is anxious to come face to face with the great beast. In addition, he declares that he will fight Grendel without any weapons to prove who is truly the strongest. After his victory, Beowulf gets his fame and becomes king of another land for fifty years.
Beowulf sees Grendel's mother in a cave. He tries to hit her with his sword, Unferth's Hrunting, but it fails to pierce her skin. So he throws the sword away and attacks the mother with his bare hands. He trusts "in his strength, his mighty hand-grip." Beowulf manages to throw Grendel's mother down; however, she quickly retaliates and is soon sitting on top of him. She tries to kill him with a dagger, but Beowulf's armor protects him this time. Beowulf managed to throw her off of himself and sees a sword of enormous size, which he immediately grabs.
Grendels death was quiet unexpected. For many people tried killing him but all failed. Until one day, a young man came and succeeded.
Knowing that the sword is powerful enough to cut the skin of Grendel’s mother, Beowulf slays her and brings the sword and the head of the mother to Hrothgar, and he rewards Beowulf with more gifts and another feast. Once Beowulf returns home, he then tells his lord about his adventures and gives him all of the rewards that he received from Hrothgar for successfully defeating Grendel and his mother. His lord, then gave him rewards such as a new golden sword that belonged to Beowulf's father and grandfather, and some land and houses. In addition, Beowulf was to have the crown after the death of his lord and the lord’s son. Fifty years after Beowulf first became king, in Geatland a dragon was awakened by a slave who discovered the path to his tower by accident.
Grendel has been murdered, and now his mother shall avenge him. Just like Grendel, she creeps up on the thanes and viciously murder Hrothgar's best man. After proving that women have power too by killing the best man, she took back her son's arm as a symbol of who is really winning this ongoing battle. Once this has happen, she will wait for Beowulf's next move in her wolf den.
After Beowulf murders her son, she seeks revenge for his death, as was acceptable in Anglo-Saxon warrior culture (Garret). She murders Hrothgar’s faithful thane Aeschere, and Beowulf again comes to Hrothgar’s aid to avenge this death. Beowulf swims to the bottom of the mere where Grendel’s mother is known to lurk so that he may kill her and stop the murder of the Danes for good. Though Beowulf was able to defeat Grendel without weapons, the same cannot be said for his defeat of Grendel’s mother. He is only saved from her fierce claws by “the mesh of the chain-mail [shirt] (Heaney 105)” that he wears on his journey into the deep. Beowulf does use his superhuman strength to kill Grendel’s mother, but in wielding a sword made for giants “…so huge and heavy of itself/only Beowulf could wield it in a battle (Heaney 109)” rather than in hand-to-hand combat. He decapitates her with the sword, then proceeds to decapitate Grendel, who had returned to his mother’s lair to die after Beowulf had mortally wounded him. After the blade of the giant’s sword dissolves in Grendel’s mother’s poisonous blood, Beowulf returns to the surface of the mere with the sword’s gilded hilt and Grendel’s severed head. The Danish kingdom has finally been saved, and Beowulf can return to his king Hygelac with the confidence that he has proven himself as a
Beowulf went to the dark lake where she had been dwelling. He was suited up with a helmet, armor, together with his own sword. However, he then found it to be useless against the mother. While in the battle hall, Beowulf spotted a superior sword on the wall. With this sword, he ended the life of Grendel’s mother. After this battle, Beowulf took Grendel’s head as a “trophie”.
Revenge is presented both as an honest motive and a rhetorical tactic in Beowulf. For Beowulf himself, reprisal of monsters’ misdeeds is his path to the top: worldwide fame, endless wealth, and universal respect. Grendel’s violence is caused less by revenge than by complete frustration with his situation. Other characters’ actions are fueled directly by a sincere desire for a settling of scores. Grendel’s mother kills Aeschere solely because Beowulf killed Grendel. The last monster that the Hero of the Geats ever faces has only one goal: to guard his hoard of treasure. When his fortune is pilfered, revenge is the dragon’s only way to react. While revenge is a common façade in Beowulf, some characters feel an honest need for retribution and seek it to their life’s end.
Beowulf is told by the King that Grendel's mother has "avenged the feud" (Abrams, 44). The king, once again, asks Beowulf to help him. Beowulf, upon seeing the king's condition, says:
Beowulf looked over on the wall next to them and saw a magnificent sword hanging on the wall adorned with beautiful carvings, it was blessed with magic. No normal man could ever have lifted that sword, but Beowulf was no normal being. He waited for the right moment to go and retrieve the sword, and when he found the perfect opportunity and he ran straight towards the wall. He pulled the sword down with great force and began running towards Grendel’s mother. Beowulf took in a deep breath as he leaned back and heaved the sword forward. Beowulf had sliced straight through Grendel’s mother’s scaly neck, blood began to pour everywhere and he heard her bones cracking as the sword passed through her.
Beowulf is called upon again to defeat this monster. Beowulf puts on his armour and takes the sword Hrunting and descends into the monster’s lair. Grendel’s mother quickly grabs Beowulf and takes him to the battle arena. Once there, Beowulf fights and finds his sword cannot pierce the monster’s hide. So once again, Beowulf throws his sword aside and fights hand-to-hand. Yet, he could not defeat her with his hands alone. Then Beowulf sees, “hanging on the wall, a heavy, Sword, hammered by giants, strong And blessed with their magic, the best of all weapons.” Taking the sword and holding it high above his head he strikes the monster in the neck cutting deep into the skin, breaking bones and all. Thus ending his second heroic battle with a mythical beast and proving that he is indeed worthy of praise. Yet, this is not the greatest of his deeds.
Beowulf’s first accomplishment as an epic hero was his battle with Grendel. Grendel was a huge beast, a descendent of Cain, who ruthlessly murdered innocent Danes because he felt pity for himself. Upon hearing of the Dane’s problem, Beowulf set off to help the Danish without having been called upon. Even though Beowulf had men backing him, He drew battle with Grendel alone and without armor or weapons. Yet, Beowulf emerged victorious with the arm of Grendel as his trophy. Beowulf then went on to kill Grendel’s vengeful mother and a huge fire-breathing dragon who thought it had been done wrong by the Geats. Alas, the killing of the dragon would be Beowulf’s last great battle for the dragon took Beowulf’s life in the struggle for his own.
