Communication is influenced and perceived by so many different factors, and each individual who participates in communication has their own values and beliefs that will influence how they perceive certain aspects of communication. Perception is such an important aspect in regards to communication and understanding how other people communicate and the reasons why the react to communication the way they do.
The influences of perception that are outlined in the text, Look: Looking Out, Looking In, include: physiological influences, cultural differences and social roles (Adler, Rolls and Proctor II, 2015). “Perception checking is a tool to help you understand others accurately instead of assuming that your first interpretation is correct,” (Adler et all, 2015, p. 79). There are three parts to a perception check that are necessary to be aware of in order to be successful, these include, “providing a description of the behaviour you noticed, offering at least two possible interpretations of the behaviour, and finally requesting clarification about how to interpret the behaviour,” (Adler et all, 2015, p. 79). An example of what I could say to Josie is, “Hey Josie, I have noticed that you have been coming into work late the past few days as well as being quieter than you usually are, it seems like something must be going on in your personal life outside of work that is bothering you, or maybe it is something I did. I was just wondering what is going on and if there is anything you want to talk about with me?” This statement to Josie provides all aspects of the perception check. It allows Josie to hear what I have interpreted from her behaviour as well as gives her a chance to provide me with the correct explanation and reasoning for her current behaviour. This allows us to talk effectively and both are able to understand where each other are coming
Staring involves an interesting conflict. It is an impulse giving us all the potential to be the starers as well as the starees and it is a natural response to our own curiosity bridging a communicative gap. Staring can be a very pleasurable experience as well as a demeaning experience depending on which side of the staring you are faced with. Similar to other bodily impulses, like eating or sex, staring and the way people stare is excessively regulated by the social world. The conflict with staring is between our urge to do it and the social constrains saying we shouldn’t that makes it such an important and intense provocative social exchange. Our society has adapted and has given us different opportunities to come in contact with people from all walks of life. When we simply stroll around the city or turn on any form of media, we see people that are different from us and we are given the opportunity to learn from them. The opportunity that often is not taken. A group of people who were excluded from the public world, were people with disabilities always being the staree and often not the starer. Through Rosemarie Garland-Thomsen’s reading, I will evaluate the roles of the starer and the staree and their impact to the communication of both parties as well as apply these roles to the film, What’s Eating Gilbert Grape and the staring roles within that media.
Perceptions, and how they might possibly influence me, whether I like it or not, I usually get them all wrong, then again I would rather not have to assume anything about someone. Passing judgment, assumptions or anything that makes me think twice about someone, I tend to stay away from, not because I can come off as passive aggressive, but because when I am wrong, I tend to feel like a jerk afterwards and I must apologize for my interpretation, and potentially misguided judgment. On the other hand, in the event of a crisis or conflict, a perception check can peel back the layers of influence, and expose the wound to continue with effective helpful healing, communication and the understanding of another individual’s circumstances.

According to Gibson’s 1989 book organization and management, perception is a cognitive process that is used by individuals to interpret and understand the world around it. Gibson also explained that perception is the process of how individuals give meaning to their environment or surroundings. Meaning that each individual would give a meaning or interpretation of a stimulus differently to others even though the object in question is the same. Most of the time the way a person view the situation is often more important than the situation itself, It can be concluded that the definition of perception is a process of sensing, the stimulus received by an individual through the sensory organs and then interpreted so that the person can understand and know about the stimulus the individual has received. The process of interpreting the stimulus is usually influenced by the person’s experience and individual’s learning process.
A popular subject within psychology is that of selective attention, particularly visual, auditory or visual and auditory attention (Driver, 2001). There are many theories of visual and auditory attention that provide us with a greater understanding of the ways in which humans attend to different stimuli (Driver, 2001), such as Broadbent’s (1958) filter theory of attention for example. This essay will compare and contrast theories of visual and auditory attention as well as discussing how well these theories explain how we attend to objects. The essay will consist of three auditory attention theories of Broadbent’s filter theory, Treisman’s (1964) attenuation theory, and Deutsch and Deutsch’s (1963) late selection model of attention; and two models of visual attention known as the spotlight model, such as Treisman and Gelade’s (1980) feature integration model, and the zoom-lens model of visual attention (see Styles, 2006).

The human perspective of staring, whether it is directly or aversely, is a phenomenon that psychologists have been trying to figure out for decades. Do we notice if someone else is staring at us from a far? What emotions run through our minds if we do feel someone else’s presence among us? Does our behavior change if we figure out someone is staring at us from a distance? The reactions and behaviors of the human mind change with each given circumstance, with each different scenario shedding light on our perceptions. In some cases, there won’t be any change in their behavior. In other cases, a person will behave differently than they normal would, possibly moving faster or even adverting their behavior to reflect or even mask their emotions. This means that a person will consciously change their behavior because of the staring. Numerous variables in which a person is staring, i.e. how far away they are, the intensity of their stare, is directly correlated to how a person will behavior to the staring (Argyle and Dean, 1973). This correlation is seen clearly when the person in the study knows they are being stared at, especially when the person/experimenter is staring directly into their eyes. A person in this situation will more than likely engage in behavior that will gauge how someone else perceives them and then this person will adjust to their other according to that analysis.
