How To Avoid Procrastination You have a deadline just around the corner. But instead of doing your work you are messing around with miscellaneous things and checking twitter, facebook, instagram, and other social media sites. When doing all of them miscellaneous things you know that you should be working but you just don 't feel like doing any of your work. Most people are very familiar with the term, “ procrastination”. When people like myself procrastinate we waste away all of our free time and put off important assignments and or task until its too late. It may not be “late” but there is usually not enough time to do the assignment or task to the best of your ability. We then panic to get the work done and always wish we had started earlier. Most people are fully aware of the dates the work is due, but most of us get the impression that we have a lot a time before we need to start working on it. So we set it aside to do later and then before we know it, it is too late. The first step to help avoid procrastination is to have a planner. Having a planner will allow you to keep track of all your assignments and their due dates. This way, you will know that you have to finish each assignment by a certain date. You may have a planner with all of your assignments to do but you have to have motivation to do them. Having motivation is the next step to avoid procrastination. In most cases people claim that they procrastinate because they have no motivation to do any of the work. You can motivate yourself by setting the due date a week or even a day earlier than the actual due date. I know that when I get an assignment done before the actual due date or even five minutes before its due I feel like i 'm on top of the world. Having a little motivation will get you a long ways when it comes to avoiding
I have the tendency to procrastinate working on assignments and increasing pressure on myself by working on a big project last minute. I struggled with this downfall throughout high school, and since I have more difficult classwork now, I want to change this devastating problem. I plan to battle this struggle by using my planner to keep track of assignment, project, and test dates. The best way to procrastinate is to interact with other people. That way you can lay part of the blame on someone else: "Well, Mom was talking to me about something important. I couldn't just walk away." I prefer to talk on the phone to friends who go to schools far away. We usually don't talk too often, so when we do, we have to make it count. Procrastination is a concept that is very relatable and real that if you ask anyone in the world whether they’ve ever procrastinated in their life, undeniably their answer will be yes. It’s been dubbed as normal and has been accepted by several procrastinators as a part of their life. Per the Merriam-Webster dictionary normal is defined as “conforming to a type, standard, or regular pattern” (Merriam-Webster 2017). As a high school/early college student there shouldn’t be any room for procrastination because of the many seminars that talk about time management and accepting responsibility and pride for your work. I procrastinate daily. It’s become a natural part of my life that my schedule is now based around doing my work on the last possible day that it’s due. I might procrastinate the entire week but I can never relax because in the back of my mind I know that I have work to complete. Procrastination is a form of relief if several tasks are piling up, but in the long run procrastinating is only putting off the inevitable that will end up as a poor job.
Procrastination has become such a bad habit for me. It is very hard to stop procrastinating everything once you have gotten into the habit of doing it. Once I had a term paper due for my religion class. It was to be ten pages long and we were told to spend a lot of time doing it. Being the procrastinator that I am, I waited to the very last minute to do it. I waited until the night before to do most of it. Needless to say, I was up very late that night. In this class there was always a part of the paper due on a certain date before the final paper was due. Having things due before the final paper is due keeps me on task and keeps me from procrastinating until the day before the paper is due. There was one paper which we had to get sources for a while before the paper was due and it forced me to keep up with the paper, rather than let it go to the last minute. This class has taught me that the earlier you start the more positive your final result will be.
As a professional procrastinator, I always waited right before the assignment was due, I would tell myself I have time to do the work. Procrastination is something easily avoided, and yet, seems to be one of the biggest causes for low grades in most students’ lives. The personal and realistic problems that result from dysfunctional procrastination are predominantly acute in academics, as the inclination to put off school-related tasks often result in challenging levels of stress (Solomon & Rothblum 1984), on the whole the end of the academic semester would be the peak (Tice & Baumeister, 1997).

When it comes to our personal and professional lives, Managing your time efficiently should be a mastered ability. As a student, this could have a huge effect on performance and grades. Seeing that Time Management is imperative when it comes to college and success, recognizing bad habits, should be one of the first obstructions immediately eliminated from your daily schedule. Create new habits if you tend to procrastinate and start planning ahead to manage your most important priorities. According to David Allen (2001),"Getting Things Done: The Art of Stress-Free Productivity" (p.59) "changes in the way you clarify and organize all things that command your attention-could represent a significant shift in how you approach some key aspects of your day to day work." Setting up deadlines and completing your assignments a few days before the due date will eliminate the procrastination stage. Creating a list with the most important priorities first, will help sort out your assignments and eliminate stress and feeling overwhelmed.

People all procrastinate at one time or another. Procrastination is the practice of delaying work on important tasks in favor of less challenging ones. Chronic procrastinating hinders productivity and affects our state of mind by creating anxiety and stress (Reichelt). As deadlines approach, one often feels frustration and guilt for not starting on a task earlier. We often assume that projects won't take as long to finish as they really will, which often results in a mad scramble to finish the project in the twenty-four hours before the projects deadline. One of the biggest factors contributing to procrastination is the misconception that we need to be inspired or in the mood to work on the task at hand (Reichelt). However, the reality is that if you wait for the “right time” you will most likely wait for an indefinite amount of time and the task will never get completed.
Do not procrastinate. Choose a task and start working on it. Delaying a task will only make it that much hard to get started. Commit yourself to working on the task for a specific amount of time each day until it is completed.
Many don’t realize that the road to success isn’t so much a road as it is a winding,
