How can we lead a healthy lifestyle? An ever-growing problem in present America is the rise of diabetes and heart diseases. This sad statistic grows every year. Although correlation does not automatically mean causation, it has been scientifically proven and backed that a healthy lifestyle can significantly decrease risk for most known diseases. So, what is a healthy lifestyle? A healthy lifestyle is not solely dependent on eating a certain diet. A wholesome lifestyle consists of eating a well-balanced diet, getting consistent exercise, and learning how to handle the stresses of life. According to many clinicians, everyone should get at least thirty minutes to 45 minutes of exercise for five days a week. This amount of exercise would help prevent most diseases, and prevention is the primary and best way to achieve health. Exercise is important to me, I always joined sports teams and tried to be active in my earlier years; however, recently I tore ligaments in my ankles and have less cartilage in my knees. Overall, I am better than most of the population at completing the recommended amount of physical activity. Every day I swim, cycle, run, or walk to stay in better shape. This along with a better diet leads to a healthy body and keeps one in shape and free of disease or sicknesses. Stress is great for responding to immediate threats and helping us focus for a short time, but when a person is stressed for a long period of time it wears down their body. Peoples’ health largely depends on how they resolve their issues with the stress-inducing object. Personally, I have been diagnosed with depression and anxiety disorders, so stress is the hardest part of my day to deal with. For instance, after my relationship ended earlier this week, I ended up going on a drinking and smoking spree for a few days.
