High school was a crucial point in my life because there were many teachers, coaches, and counselors that were vital toward my development. Many of these faculty members became role models and major inspirations to me. My counselor in high school was particularly inspiring to me because he connected with me, coached me in athletics, and guided me toward success. Identify the type of client you would be most likely to work (e.g., children, adolescents, college students, adults). What personal characteristics and skills are needed by the counselor to be effective with this group? The age group that I would most like to work with are high school students because this era was a major turning point in my life toward success. This is credited to the excellent and hard working faculty members. Now it is my goal in life to become a school counselor in order to make a difference in young peoples’ lives similar to the way it was made on me. A counselor working with any population will have to be good listener, accessible, and an excellent communicator. A high school counselor will have to possess these trait along with a being able to be an authoritarian figure when the situation calls for it. Kids in high school often make poor decisions. A quality guidance counselor must be able to switch from friend to professional when a student is engaged in harmful or risky behavior. Another trait that is helpful for a high school counselor to have is a sense of humor. A sense of humor can be a major asset in connecting with a student and gaining their trust. A professional school counselor is skilled and trained to use his/her best judgment when it comes to students’ rights and confidentiality. One should behave as a professional at all times and be mindful of their behavior. One not only have to be aware of professional values they should also be knowledgeable of applying these standards as they apply to the role of the school counselor. The professional school counselor is responsible for removing barriers to learning and to advocate for change for all students. Counselors are open-minded and do not pass judgment verbally or physically at anytime while assisting students. Prejudging minimizes responses from distressed or problematic students. Giving advice and assistance should not be based on counselors’ personal opinion. Good counselors will refrain from bias and therefore communicate effective skills to empower students. Counselor should become listeners, observers, and advisers.

Individuals’ perceptions of their life/worth have the power to control the goals that they can carry out and meet. Every day we are learning new things and everyone has his/her own unique ways of learning. My strong desire to help students with their academic, personal, and social needs make me a strong candidate as a school counselor. In determining schools effective counseling practices, school counselors have a responsibility in showing that their programs are effective. A needs assessment will determine what works and which areas need improvement. Measuring results is crucial in determining success from failure. Evaluating counseling programs holds counselors accountable and allows them to do their work effectively.
School counselors must recognize that there are certain ethical codes they cannot depart from. Practicing within the boundaries of their professionalism, education, training, and supervision, will enable counselors to be accurate in their practices. ACA’s ethical code C.2.a., Herlihy & Corey (2015), p. 68, explains how counselors need to keep their boundaries of competence. A clear example of this practice is shown as follows.
My college career started with me just going to school to take PE classes while neglecting my main required core classes and always pushing them aside without any urgency to succeed in finishing school. A couple of years would go by with little to no progress and lack of motivation to succeed in finishing my college required classes. Soon landing a career oriented job and finding myself dropping out of college to focus on my work career. From this point and time I would learn the importance of school and the value of finish college through my years of experience at work. This awareness of value in finishing college would motivate me to want to go back to school. Soon I would find myself at American River College counseling center. Here I was coming back to school unsure of myself and in an environment where I previously never found success in school. After meeting with my counselor I was recommended to take a college success course. This course is part of a program called the Accelerated College Education (ACE). Because I was able to learn along the years being out of school the importance of gaining an education I gained a new motivation for school, signed up for this ACE program, and enroll in the college success

It requires a lot of multi-tasking with counseling collage, personal/social, and academic, along with having to do classroom checks and student checks to see how your students are doing in each class are are they being successful to all there capabilities. For a typical high school counselor the work hours tend to be 7 to 9 hours Monday through Friday when working in a traditional high school time schedule. Every counselor has there own way of approaching everything they do with there students because its a very personal hands on relationship with each and every student. But most counselors are closer with the seniors of every year because of all the collage advising them through the entire process.
The focus of the study was to use the results to help counselor educators and education administrators train future school counselors and principals. The training received in their graduate programs “may improve job satisfaction of school counselors and provide a foundation for and about change mission of schooling and how school counselors and principals work together”(357-358).
The client should be honest with the counselor, discuss concerns, and listen to the counselor. I would expect students to trust in their abilities to make their own choices get in touch with their feelings. I believe client roles are resourceful in helping people take more responsibility for their lives and solve their own problems. I believe the client is fully capable of fulfilling their own potential for growth.
A guidance counselor is an important element in the formation of post high school plans. Counselors offer an outlet of information that should be used by all students. There are numerous ways for the counselor to approach post high school planning.
Guidance counseling, also called school counseling, has evolved over the years into an important part of the education system. Counselors are now taking on new roles in schools as leaders so much so that the ways in which counseling is being implemented has become a much talked about topic in schools. The effectiveness of counseling in schools is looked at by the education system more frequently than it was in the past. Though all school counselors must follow a national model for counseling, the roles and functions of counselors at various levels in the school system are different, however, school counselors at all levels of education before college are generally effective despite implications.
