Tattoos and Piercings Throughout society, some people think that body piercings and tattoos are dirty, disgusting, irresponsible and trashy. John Leo thinks the cultural crisis can’t really be dealt with by letting loose of our personal obsessions and marking up our bodies. I think body piercings and tattoos is a great way to express independence, religious or cultural reasons. The purpose of this essay is to not really focus on what John Leo thinks about body modification, but to show how body modification is okay to have to express someone 's personality. A blogger said, “Perhaps we’re moving on from being judged for having a tattoo to being judged for the content of our tattoos” (Abbie, para.11). Today generations are more accepting to the idea that it’s fine to have a tattoo. Most of the older generation are not really so certain about having a tattoo or piercing. Society is now starting to judge people on what kind of tattoo people should get to express themselves. Getting a tattoo should be a beautiful way to express a person 's personality. “Because, after all, tattoos are art. Outside of insanely inhumane “branding” that has been practiced at different points in human history, a large part of the history of tattoos is of aesthetics and beauty” (Abbie, para. 22). Tattoos are a beautiful and powerful way to express someone’s personality. Having a piercing shouldn 't be different either. “60% of American adults have piercings. Leo’s essay is pretty judgemental on tattoos and piercings. He believes that the reasons for why people modify their body goes beyond the body art. Leo says, “The yearning to irritate parents and shock the middle class” and “It plugs into a wider norms, as well as anger at the impact of Western rationality, logic and sexual norms, as well as anger” (para. 10). This means that he thinks body piercings and tattoos are done as an act of rebellion. Claiming that people just get tattoos and piercings is a sign of stereotyping. His views are based on the idea that people just want to be a rebel for modifying their body. Tattoos and piercings are not really done by being rebellious anymore. Most of Leo reasons about having a tattoo or piercing is not really true anymore. Children 's Health says, “4000 to 2000 B.C. similar to tattooing body piercing also has a long history, which includes being used as a symbol of loyalty and courage” (para. 5). Clearly, piercings and tattoos were not meant to be rebellion, but showing how strong a person really is with their personality.
