Over the last few years society has gone through a momentous change in the potrayal of traditional roles in not just families but also in the community. The House on Mango Street by Sandra Cisneros focuses on the adolescents of a young Latino girl named Esperanza, and her struggle with understanding the world around her. Her experiences on Mango Street help guide Esperanza through her young adult life in the hopes of her discover who she is and what she wants in her life. Esperanza discusses how her mother is an extraordinary woman of many talents. In the scene Esperanza explains how her mother was singing Opera from Madame Butterfly in the kitchen when she stops and tells Esperanza, “Madame butterfly was a fool” (91). In the opera, the main character, Madame Butterfly, sacrifices her culture and ultimately her life all for a man who does not love her back. Esperanza’s mother uses her as an example to Esperanza in order to explain to her how she should not to throw your life away for a boy. Her mother is trying to look out for her best interest in the hopes that she will stray from tradition and continue to go to school to improve her opportunities. Esperanza’s mother later talks about how she too was a very smart and bright child but threw it all away. Her mother tells her that “shame is a bad thing, you know. It keeps you down” (91). She tells Esperanza this because the main reason her mother stopped going to school was because she was embarrassed of her clothes. Her mother’s advice is to never let fear of what other think get in the way of following her dreams. Her mother wants her to be smart then she was a teenager, and wants her to follow her dreams because like her great-grandmother, her mother never got to fulfill her dreams either. This encounter with her mother causes Esperanza to appreciate not only her mother, but the freedom she has now because she has chosen her own path and not settled-down yet like many of her friends.
