The Shawshank Redemption: In the film “The Shawshank Redemption” directed by: Frank Darabont, one or more themes in the visual or oral text(s) can be applied to the wider society. In this case the themes are hope and redemption as Andy Dufrense spends 19 years in a violent prison for a crime he did not commit, although he survives alongside a couple of friends of his due to staying hopeful. The following will be outlined in this essay; Firstly, Andy’s redemptive act of playing beautiful music on a PA system for all parts of the prison. Secondly, Andy’s hopefulness nearly costing him his life during the tarring of the rooftop scene. Lastly, when Andy shares hope with his friend Red by helping him find hope before his last parole. During this scene there is a crane shot of Andy and Captain Hadley to show the situation that Andy is in as Captain Hadley’s holding him at the tip of the roof while yelling in his face with anger which scares Andy remarkably as the witnesses see it as Captain Hadley’s going to push him off the roof. Darabont used the shot to show the audience that the guard: Captain Hadley has a lot of power over Andy at this point, the non- digetic sound in the background during this scene helps to intrigue the audience even more thinking that he’s actually going to be pushed off the roof. In the dialogue “There is going to be an accident here,” stated by Captain Hadley which gives the audience the sense that Andy is going to die and that Captain Hadley is going to tell the others who weren’t there at the time that it was all an accident, it shows us the amount of power and anger the Captain has. Andy makes a deal with the Captain as he links his accounting skills to provide financial advice for the Captain himself. Lastly, in the dialogue “I think a man working outdoors feels more like a man if he can have a bottle of suds. That’s only my opinion” which was reinforced by Andy, who cares about his friends. However, Red thinks that Andy did it just to feel normal again after all the hard times he is facing he’s been through, which relates back to the wider society with when you’re wanting to take risks, but you’ll need to firstly have faith and hopefulness that you’re going to do it and that will help you get through your difficult
All in all, Kerman’s year sentence in jail opened her eyes to some of the many problems within the federal prison system. She witnessed favoritism, abuse, health violations, etc. that helped her realize that she never wanted to go back to prison, despite all the true friendships she made. Through her use of rhetoric, mainly ethos, Kerman showed her audience a firsthand account of what an actual prison sentence is like. She also explored the idea of how one bad decision can change a person’s life forever.
Grant Wood was a Regionalist artist who continually endeavored to capture the idyllic beauty of America’s farmlands. In 1930 he had been roaming through his hometown in Iowa searching for inspiration when he stumbled upon a house that left him spellbound. From this encounter came America’s iconic American Gothic. Not long after Wood’s masterpiece was complete the once ideal countryside and the people who tended to it were overcome by despair and suffering as the Great Depression came to be. It was a time of economic distress that affected nearly every nation. America’s stock market crashed in 1929 and by 1933 millions of Americans were found without work and consequently without adequate food, shelter, and other necessities. In 1935, things took a turn for the worst as severe winds and dust storms destroyed the southern Great Plains in the event that became known as the Dust Bowl. Farmers, who had been able to fall back on their crops during past depressions, were hit especially hard. With no work or way or other source of income, many farms were foreclosed, leaving countless families hungry and homeless. Ben Shahn, a Lithuanian-born man who had a deep passion for social injustice, captures the well-known hopelessness of the Great Depression through his photograph Rural Rehabilitation Client. Shahn and Wood use their art to depict the desperation of everyday farmers in America due to the terrors and adverse repercussions that the Great Depression incited.
In the book Our America: Life and Death on the South Side of Chicago, LeAlan Johns and Lloyd Newman, as two kids grow up in ghetto, document their life from 1993 to 1996 to show the rest of the America the reality of living in a poor black neighborhood. Through vast interviews, diaries and monologues, Johns and Newman provide a new perspective on the ongoing issues in the ignorant black community; they encourage the black residents to express their point of views on gang, drug, crime, and they also address their hope. Since this book is story with long time span and fragmental writing styles, it is impossible to finish the soundtrack for chapters in detail within eight songs. Therefore, if I am going to be the music composer of the movie based on this book, I would choose eight songs for the following eight themes.

Argot roles, in prison as explained by Gresham Sykes, display the beliefs and attitudes of prisoners expressed in a rather distinctive manner (Lovell, 1998). They are exemplified through the inherit meanings generation by the prison environment and tied together through the prisoner social world. The language is a significant aspect of prison, and therefore it is essential to understanding the social worlds of prisoners. These argot roles represent a framework in which the social world can be further understood. There are several argot roles found in a prison. In specific, throughout the movie Shawshank Redemption, many of the characters are labelled and interpreted to be play such roles signifying how common these roles are in a prison.
The Big Lebowski was a screenplay written by Joel and Ethan Coen. It is a comedy that is screen written and a movie that shows how life can be so unexpected. Lebowski known as “The Dude” has had his life terrorized and even his belongings being terrorized which first started off with his rug then went on to other belongings in his house being broken into and being destroyed and along with his car. All The Dude wanted was his rug back "it brought everything together" as he would say within the movie. The Dude went through a whole lot of trouble for this to happen. The people who are terrorizing The Dude have the wrong person, they thought he was a millionaire whose wife owed them money. The Dude is unemployed, broke and lives In an apartment complex and who drinks excessively and smokes blunts while only worrying about bowling. The topic being addressed in this paper will conclude the difference between bums vs achievers. How is The dude much different from Jeffrey Lebowski when the dude does the majority of the work through the novel?. The Dude and Lebowski might be different in certain ways but, there are no differences from each other.

It was been told to Lennie so many times that even he can memorize the dream, meaning Lennie really loves the dream and even want to hear it more. Dreams can give people the will to live and the will to fight. People can lose their will to live or to achiever their goal if the dream is lost. Dream is the most important thing for George and Lennie because it's the only thing they can depend on to live.

No longer a mere source for cultural self-realization, blackness now actively aids in the empowerment and redemption of whiteness and in no other film is this made quite as clear as it is in Frank Darabont’s adaptation of Stephen King’s The Green Mile. A period piece not unlike Darabont’s previous film, The Shawshank Redemption, The Green Mile is also set in a prison during the first part of the twentieth century. The central character, Paul Edgecomb (Tom Hanks), is an affable guard placed in charge of Cold Mountain Correctional Facility’s death row, called The Green Mile by the prison population.

The main themes of the poem are rebellion, oppression, and imprisonment. The theme of imprisonment is evident in Hard Rock Returns to Prison from the Hospital for the Criminal Insane poem. Hard Rock was a tough inmate, silenced by lobotomy. Hard Rock was a hero to the other prisoners, and this made the authority to take actions against him in order to tend his defiance. The punishment given to him was unjust because, it altered his body and movements, in addition to shortening his life. Etheridge Knight’s “Hard Rock Returns to Prison from the Hospital for the Criminal Insane” is an interesting poem spurred from his own experiences, that explores a variety of things from basic human emotions to controversial medical treatments. Knight was incarcerated for 8 years for robbery, during which he began to develop his skill as a poet, and this stint in prison influenced the settings and styles of his poetry. Knight’s poem is unique in its slang-styled diction, but brings about relatable concepts to allow the reader to connect with the text. Two prominent themes within the poem are that anyone, no matter how strong or looked up to, can be broken, and also that slavery is still alive today, even if it is not in its traditional form. Knight combines these themes with deeper meanings and an individual way of writing to create a poem that is compelling and classic.
