Traditionally in this country, marriage has been defined as a religious and legal commitment between a man and a woman. Homosexual relationships are slowly gaining acceptance in this country; however these same-sex couples cannot marry legally, have or adopt children, and are believed to threaten society. Some states are performing commitment ceremonies called “civil unions” which is marriage without using the word “marriage”. Many heterosexual citizens as well as politicians are against gay marriage, but, believe it should be left up to the states to decide. Joe Messerli states, “Many politicians are calling for amendments to their state constitution.
Gay marriage would weaken the traditional family values. That could m... ... middle of paper ... ...ther. That means the child would not get the experience of having a dad or a mom. Besides being gay that would not create a family. It also violates a natural law.
On June 26, 2015, the US Supreme Court ruled that the US Constitution guarantees the right for same-sex couples to marry. Many conservative groups do NOT agree with this decision. The believe that gay marriage should not be permitted but civil unions should be granted to lesbians and homosexuals. On the other hand there is a large group that believes neither gay marriage nor civil unions should be offered to gay and lesbian couples and that any legal union should be available to heterosexual couples only. The different opinions that are expressed by society’s attitudes towards gay marriage continue to cause great controversy throughout the country, and should come to a halt by allowing homosexuals to wed.
If the child is from a previous heterosexual relationship then studies show that it is likely the homosexual parents will be denied all rights to see the child (Perrin 342). Finding an adoption agency can be exceedingly d... ... middle of paper ... ...d to live by the standards of a God they don’t believe in. Another concern is that if homosexual parents get another child of their same gender that the child will be sexually abused but same sex parents view their children in the same way heterosexual ones do. The risk is no higher than with heterosexual parents. Another argument is that the child will not develop right psychologically but to say this is saying that homosexuality is a mental disorder which according to the DSM- V it is not (Reekers 343).
Also, the ramifications of the legalization of gay marriage, both for gays and society, will be examined. Finally, I will refute arguments against same-sex marriage. Society benefits by having fewer "closet gays." "Closet gays" are homosexuals who try to abide by society's standards, and marry a partner of the opposite sex (Harbinger 683). However, due to the different sexual orientations of the two partners, problems often occur, causing emotional harm to"closet gays," their partners, and their children (Harbinger 683).
Gay’s are tied to their second-class status if they are denied equal rights of a traditional couple’s marriage. The conflict theorists suggest that citizens will continue to view homosexuals as underclass, or unworthy, if the law does not allow them equivalent marriage rights. Homosexual individuals will be connected to their inability to marry, and therefore, they will be assumed to have lesser power. Finally the symbolic-interactionist theorists have take the homosexual marriage debate into account. The
Opponents of such legislation do not want discrimination passed into law and are protesting at every opportunity. One must understand the reasons that people want to ban same-sex marriage before he or she can effectively argue about the subject. Many advocates of same-sex marriage bans say that allowing gays and lesbians to marry would degrade the institution of marriage because marriage is only supposed to exist between a man and woman. In addition, allowing same-sex marriage would cause problems for society (Issues and Controversies on File). One theory why opponents may fight against same-sex marriages is that heterosexual marriages have long reinforced traditional gender roles within marriage and that allowing same-sex marriages would cause males to lose their authority to subordinate females as heterosexual couples begin to model same-sex marriage gender equality (Calhoun 157).
If president Obama believe that everyone was created equal and that he had made the union a little more perfect, why are other people trying to fight and screw up the almost perfect America. It blows my mind how people are so negative to other people life and happiness. Like if someone wants to get married with the same sex and be happy; let them it’s not you that getting married to the same sex; so why does someone else happiness has too involved rude negative people. Moreover, “just because same sex marriage is weakling the traditional marriages does not mean anything” (Zorn). I saw so many couples who are in the lesbian gay bisexual and transgender communities that had posted there married on YouTube and still are married to this
On June 26, 2015, the US Supreme Court ruled that the US Constitution guarantees the right for same-sex couples to marry. Should gay marriages really be allowed? Has the Supreme Court ruled in error? In our society today, homosexuals are treated unconstitutionally, they are forced to live a secret life, they are forbidden to adopt and raise children and unable to marry the person they love. This is just a few to the many inequalities that homosexuals face in everyday life.
Marriage is a commitment of private love between two people, yet homosexuals have been denied the right to make their marriage recognized in most states in America. The people who are against gay marriage believe in protecting traditional marriage between a man and a woman (Jones). They argue that homosexuality isn’t natural, therefore it shouldn’t be accepted in our society. Also, they say that a child can be raised best in an environment with a mother and a father, and that having gay parents will result in their child being gay (Hansen). Many religions, like Christianity, Judaism, and Islam, deny homosexuality, and since marriage is a religious ceremony, many believe that it would be wrong to legalize homosexual marriage because it goes against its principles(Jones).
