Homework Issue
Night after night, with 5 or 4 hours of sleep, and more homework to finish, it is nearly impossible for both mental and physical health for middle school kids. Studies show that kids need 8 hours of sleep to stay healthy, but homework is being brought upon them, with no benefits. Homework should not be mandatory because it’s stressful, unhealthy, and no benefits and at the same time feeling like communism. Stressful because students have to do 3 to 4 hours of homework, study for tests and quizzes, play sports, get involved in the community, eat food with nutritional value, and get a healthy amount of sleep in one day! Unhealthy, because kids sit down for 4-5 hours eating, and barely moving, that causes them to get fat. It has no benefits because the smartest countries, like Finland and Japan, have no homework, teachers and by giving high amounts of homework, teachers are forcing kids to like everything, almost like communism. As a teacher, the more work you give, the less time for you to at least enjoy your life.
Homework should not be mandatory because it’s stressful for kids, parents, and teachers; it’s not healthy, because it doesn’t help mentally and physically; it has no absolute value to kid’s education but feels like communism at the same time. The Debate organization says “If a student can truly understand and connect with a subject, they will go out and learn more about it on their free time because it interests them.” “By forcing high amounts of homework, teachers are forcing their students to like everything… sounds an awful lot like communism,” A student once stated “I’ve been told it’s ‘my job’ (as a student) to do this stuff and nobody is paying me!” But they’re paying the teachers.

Is it necessary for you to be fat, lazy, and boring since the teachers are forcing you? (If you’re a student) Would you like to give more work to yourself, and still get paid just a little? (If you’re a teacher) Or do you just want to be free from school, when the school is done? Because I think the purpose of the school is to teach kids inside that building, and let kids go home and relax or find something that interests them, and go back to school and start again. That’s just my opinion, but I guess when all kids grow up in the U.S, we are all going to be fat, boring and lazy, and do nothing but work.

When you think about school one of the first things that pops into people’s mind is homework. Basically if you have asked your parents or your grandparents they would say that they remember the homework load. Now we all know that homework can be beneficial but also can be very unhealthy with all of the stress that it causes. Over the years the homework load has increased because of the fact that schools think that they need to try to keep up with other countries in academics. And will doing all of this homework now be all for nothing later? The homework load has increased these past couple of years and it is causing a lot of stress on kids and overall is not helping their academics in the long run.
Homework has been an integral part of education since children started to be educated. Recently however, homework has begun to be assigned more and more often to students, especially in the United States, as it has begun to fall further and further behind countries like China, Singapore, and Japan. Homework is anything assigned by teachers to be completed by the students either at home, or just on their own time. The workload for students has gotten to the point where more and more parents are starting to notice the load for their kids has gotten to be too much. Many kids in high school, even 9th and 10th graders, can have 3 or even 4 hours of homework every night. In the past couple years, homework has gotten so out of control that parents are starting to speak out, and protest the amount of homework that students get each night (Marzano). In addition, studies have been done to determine the value of homework, but overall, the results are mixed at best (Kohn). Even studies that show a positive relationship between homework and test scores, among other things, show that homework is only effective when assigned in a moderate amount. Too much homework can be counter-productive, or have adverse effects on students. Students with too much homework can perform worse on tests, and develop serious physical and mental health problems from too much stress or lack of sleep.
Have you ever got home after school and just wanted to relax? But then you remember that you have tons and tons of homework. You complete everything but you still have to print something out, but you don't have a working printer. You go into school the next day and you tell your teacher. The teacher looks at you with a menacing eye and calls it an excuse for not doing it. This is what happens to students all the time. As soon as a teacher sees a blank homework sheet, they automatically think you just chose not to do it. Therefore homework should be banned. Kids don't always have the time to complete the homework that was assigned. In fact, according to author Tami Ansary said that since 1981, the amount of homework given to 6th graders has
Kids are missing out on fun activities because they are busy doing homework. Sometimes students stay up way too late because they are doing homework. Then the student doesn’t get a lot of sleep which can lead them to being late the next morning for school. Also while a student is doing homework everyone else is out playing fun games. The kid then might get jelous which can lead the student to depression. The student can’t do stuff like play football with friends or watch a movie with a family member. Students don’t get to explore the world around them because of homework. Kids should be out playing sports or playing
Has homework ever weighed you down? If not now then when you were a kid? That’s how many children feel every day of the week. Many students at Round Valley school have been getting an outrageous amount of homework everyday. For example 46.2% of students that were surveyed believe that homework does not help them at all and that it is just busy work that keeps them from playing outside and having fun. I believe that Round valley students should not get homework because they don’t have time to sleep, they have trouble focusing and they have lots of anxiety.
In conclusion, I have to say that homework should truly be banned from all schools around the world. When this happens, teachers will start to feel respected during class time, parents will be able to bond and get together with their precious family for once, and students? They will be living the true meaning of a school life. Sure, homework can teach children good study habits, organization, and responsibility. But face it. You and I know it’s just more than that. Homework is just downright misery.
The variety of harmful affects stemming from homework in any amount prove it must be banned in all grades, K-12, to save our school system. Banning homework deserves first priority in our educational system. School systems across the country have already begun to catch on, though homework remains a wide-ranging problem. Together, our country can end homework for all kids and drastically improve the quality of American education, giving them a better education to thrive in the fast-growing world of the 21st century. To give children this opportunity, homework must be banned.
87 percent of high school teens are not getting the sleep that is recommended for a healthy lifestyle. Because, school starts at an early time, the time for sleep is compressed to a point where their minds and bodies are not ready to be awake (Richter, Ruthann). Due to having cell phones teens are staying up later, after doing homework to check their social media account, talk to family members, and to catch up on the new they missed out on in school or while doing homework. With the academic stress that is put on to teenagers in this modern world that has so much to offer and not enough time to seek it all, many come home from various practices and jobs just to do four to five hours of homework from advanced classes or even extra work from level classes that are required in all schools. The school should reduce the amount of homework given every night
The early school day start enforced by the greater part of high schools in the United States is harmful to the education and health of students. It is proven with scientific data, as it limits students ability to retain and process information, damages biological sleep cycles, leads to increased likelihood for chronic stress and depression. It also causes health risks like diabetes. Since the teacher pile on the homework and expect students to get it done the next day before. With students trying to be responsible and getting their homework done, they do not get enough sleep. If a teenage or anyone that goes four days without REM sleep they will start to desire to eat more junk food rather than more nutritious. This will cause them to get type two diabetes. Healthline.com has said that “Students in high achieving neighborhoods who spend too much time on homework have more health problems, stress, and alienation from society.” Being sick of school is one thing, but when school is making you sick because of the homework you have now is bad. Elementary kids having physical problems just from homework can eventually lead to other possible problems down the road. These problems include substance abuse, becoming a high school dropout, and possibly death by suicide. So why risk a student’s life for a few homework
The average start time for school in the United States is 8:03 a.m. (School Starts Too Early). Any athletics and extracurriculars are handled after school because the early start allows for earlier release. This schedule is hurting students significantly. This early of a start is preventing students from getting the sleep they need (Lewis). Lack of sleep can be detrimental to their health. Sleep deprivation can cause many problems, both mentally and physically. Mentally, students become impatient and even aggressive. They easily lose focus and have an extremely hard time retaining information taught to them in school. Some students have increased levels of depression, which just further progresses the already numerous symptoms. Physically, they can begin to eat unhealthy food and their is a direct link between sleep deprivation and obesity. The constant drowsiness that they feel can prevent students from partaking in the daily physical activities they need to do to remain healthy. Finally, sleep deprivation increases the chance of students using drugs and alcohol and forming a dependency on nicotine and caffeine. Unfortunately, a survey conducted by the Center for Disease Control and Prevention found that forty-two states reported that seventy five percent or more of their schools began before 8:30 a.m. (School Starts Too Early I think it is safe to say that no parent nor teacher wants this for their child or student. The forming of these unhealthy habits will affect them in the long run
Have you ever wanted to just shred up your homework or throw it out the window and have no consequences? Kids are assigned daily homework from the time they start kindergarten at the ripe young age of five. Is it really necessary? Does it even help better learning or even higher test scores? The amount of homework we do wastes time, money, paper, and trees because it’s practically the exact same thing we did in class that day. Homework causes kid’s and teen’s frustration, tiredness, little time for other activities and possibly even a loss of interest in their education. It also keeps everyone up; it has kids and teens staying up until they finish it, the parents trying to help them and the teachers grading it. So, I think that homework is a waste and kids and teens should choose whether they want to do their homework for extra credit and practice or not.
Homework is for suckers. Homework causes stress for students as well as for parents. Homework is extremely demanding and many students are spending far too many hours after school to complete their homework assignments. Although, some students may be able to whiz right through their homework, other students crawl along struggling at a snail’s pace. Consequently, family time is put on the back burner due to the time constraints of homework. Additionally, any extracurricular activities are also put on hold. Homework is nothing more than a scapegoat for teachers so that they can pawn off their due responsibilities on parents and students. Homework should be banned for students Kindergarten through 8th grade because the negative effects do not out weight the benefits that come from homework.
Children go to school for seven hours a day, when teachers make them do homework it causes them to get stressed. Furthermore if children understand what they learned at school why do they need to repeat it at home? If children are struggling on a certain subject, teachers should be able to help them directly, not with homework because giving them homework on something they don't know anything about is counterproductive. Instead private tutoring could be something schools provide for failing students and not homework.
This will help promote my side of the argument so that my side will be the superior argument and will attract more readers. I think kids should have less homework.Three reasons are, that homework is stressful, kids are given more homework than required, and it puts pressure on students causing them to work to hard and and have anxiety and health issues.
